Less but Better? Teaching Maths in Further Education and Collateral Growth

The paper presents and explores the experience of maths students studying in a context shaped by a core concept maths curriculum. The three vignettes that illuminate experience are drawn from a larger research project that worked with five teachers and 630 learners aged 16−18 in Further Education classrooms in England. Analysis involved distinguishing different understandings of being good at maths, different views of a good maths curriculum and identifying enablers and barriers to being a ‘successful’ maths student. Dewey’s ideas about focused experience and collateral learning were used to deepen this analysis. The paper reports a surprising finding. In some cases, students recognize the positive impact learning maths had on developing their wider human capabilities. Maths teachers in England, working in the context of ‘new public management’, may find reasons to take heart from the accounts of teaching and learning presented. For the international reader who is grappling with the challenge of reengaging maths students, the accounts of what matters to students could spur a reconsideration of priorities and practice

A mechanistic study of the EC′ mechanism – the split wave in cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry

In this paper, a detailed investigation of electrochemical reactions coupled with homogenous chemical steps using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) was carried out to study the electrocatalytic (EC’) mechanism. In CV, parameters including scan rate, electrode material and redox reactant were investigated while in SWV, parameters including substrate concentrations and frequencies were altered to demonstrate EC’ mechanism. Mechanistic studies focused on the EC’ mechanism using L-cysteine with ferrocenecarboxylic acid and 1,1 ′-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid respectively. Voltammetric responses were recorded and under conditions of high chemical rate constant and low substrate concentration, a split wave was observed in both CV and SWV studies

Does health-related content in a major Ugandan newspaper reflect the changing burden of disease in East Africa?

Disease burden in urban sub-Saharan Africa is changing rapidly. Mortality and morbidity from chronic physical disease (e.g. heart, disease, stroke and cancer) is rising rapidly and believed to be as great as from infections (e.g. malaria, HIV and tuberculosis). Other increasing disease burdens in sub Saharan Africa include mental illness, substance abuse and accidents, especially road traffic collisions (RTC). Newspaper readership is rising in Uganda. This study used content analysis to examine health-related coverage in one major Ugandan newspaper (New Vision). 29 consecutive paper copies from September/October 2013 were examined independently by two researchers. Health-related articles were identified, counted and coded according to clinical content. Clinical and healthcare-related coverage was present in every edition and represented approximate proportions of 2.6% and 0.4% respectively of total newspaper content. Of 214 news articles identified, these covered the following clinical themes: general well-being (15.4%), healthcare services (14.5%), HIV (12.1%), violence/accidents (11.2%), chronic physical disease (11.2%), sexual, maternal and reproductive health (SMRH) (10.8%), non-HIV infective diseases (10.8), malnutrition (7.9%), substance misuse (3.3%) and mental health (2.8%). Coverage of RTCs, alcohol, smoking, and cancers other than of the breast and cervix was minimal. Health-related content was dominated by infections, healthcare quality, general wellbeing, SMRH and malnutrition. This does not represent the changing burden of disease in Uganda. There may be scope for targeted interventions with editors to promote coverage of growing challenges, including lifestyle advice to prevent chronic diseases

Helminth Parasites of the Brown-Headed Cowbird, Molothrus Ater Ater, from Ohio

Author Institution: Department of Zoology, The Ohio State UniversityA total of 166 Brown-headed Cowbirds was examined for the occurrence of helminth parasites. Of these, 116 were collected on the campus of The Ohio State University, Franklin County, Ohio, from January 1964 through February 1965. The remainder of the birds were collected on South Bass Island, Ottawa County, Ohio, from July 1969 through July 1970. Twenty species of helminth parasites are recorded from these birds. Sixteen of these helminth species are new host records: the trematodes Conspicuum icteridorum, Lutztrema sp., Prosthogonimus macrorchis, Tanaisia zarudnyi, and Zonorchis alveyi; the cestode Orthoskrjabinia rostellata; the nematodes Capillaria caudinflata, C. ovopunctatum, C. tridens, Chandlerella quiscali, Diplotriaena bargusinica, Microtetrameres sp., Splendidofilaria algonquinensis, Syngamus trachea, and Tetrameres americana; and the acanthocephalan Plagiorhynchus formosus
