Shuttle orbiter radar cross-sectional analysis
Theoretical and model simulation studies on signal to noise levels and shuttle radar cross section are described. Pre-mission system calibrations, system configuration, and postmission system calibration of the tracking radars are described. Conversion of target range, azimuth, and elevation into radar centered east north vertical position coordinates are evaluated. The location of the impinging rf energy with respect to the target vehicles body axis triad is calculated. Cross section correlation between the two radars is presented
Consuming transgenic goats' milk containing the antimicrobial protein lysozyme helps resolve diarrhea in young pigs.
Childhood diarrhea is a significant problem in many developing countries and E. coli is a main causative agent of diarrhea in young children. Lysozyme is an antimicrobial protein highly expressed in human milk, but not ruminant milk, and is thought to help protect breastfeeding children against diarrheal diseases. We hypothesized that consumption of milk from transgenic goats which produce human lysozyme (hLZ-milk) in their milk would accelerate recovery from bacterial-induced diarrhea. Young pigs were used as a model for children and infected with enterotoxigenic E. coli. Once clinical signs of diarrhea developed, pigs were fed hLZ-milk or non-transgenic control goat milk three times a day for two days. Clinical observations and complete blood counts (CBC) were performed. Animals were euthanized and samples collected to assess differences in histology, cytokine expression and bacterial translocation into the mesenteric lymph node. Pigs consuming hLZ-milk recovered from clinical signs of infection faster than pigs consuming control milk, with significantly improved fecal consistency (p = 0.0190) and activity level (p = 0.0350). The CBC analysis showed circulating monocytes (p = 0.0413), neutrophils (p = 0.0219), and lymphocytes (p = 0.0222) returned faster to pre-infection proportions in hLZ-milk fed pigs, while control-fed pigs had significantly higher hematocrit (p = 0.027), indicating continuing dehydration. In the ileum, pigs fed hLZ-milk had significantly lower expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-8 (p = 0.0271), longer intestinal villi (p<0.0001), deeper crypts (p = 0.0053), and a thinner lamina propria (p = 0.0004). These data demonstrate that consumption of hLZ-milk helped pigs recover from infection faster, making hLZ-milk an effective treatment of E. coli-induced diarrhea
Developing the Next Generation of Physics Assessments
Science education at all levels is currently undergoing dramatic changes to
its curricula and developing assessments for these new curricula is paramount.
We have used the basis of many of these new changes (scientific practices,
crosscutting concepts, and core ideas) to develop sets of criteria that can be
used to guide assessment development for this new curriculum. We present a case
study that uses the criteria we have developed to revise a traditional physics
assessment item into an assessment item that is much more aligned with the
goals of current transformation efforts. Assessment items developed using this
criteria can be used to assess student learning of both the concepts and

Layered Metals Fabrication Technology Development for Support of Lunar Exploration at NASA/MSFC
NASA's human exploration initiative poses great opportunity and risk for missions to the Moon and beyond. In support of these missions, engineers and scientists at the Marshall Space Flight Center are developing technologies for ground-based and in-situ fabrication capabilities utilizing provisioned and locally-refined materials. Development efforts are pushing state-of-the art fabrication technologies to support habitat structure development, tools and mechanical part fabrication, as well as repair and replacement of ground support and space mission hardware such as life support items, launch vehicle components and crew exercise equipment. This paper addresses current fabrication technologies relative to meeting targeted capabilities, near term advancement goals, and process certification of fabrication methods

X-ray Surface Brightness Profiles of Active Galactic Nuclei in the Extended Groth Strip: Implications for AGN Feedback
Using data from the All Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey
(AEGIS) we statistically detect the extended X-ray emission in the interstellar
medium (ISM)/intra-cluster medium (ICM) in both active and normal galaxies at
0.3 <= z <= 1.3. For both active galactic nuclei (AGN) host galaxy and normal
galaxy samples that are matched in restframe color, luminosity, and redshift
distribution, we tentatively detect excess X-ray emission at scales of 1--10
arcsec at a few sigma significance in the surface brightness profiles. The
exact significance of this detection is sensitive to the true characterization
of Chandra's point spread function. The observed excess in the surface
brightness profiles is suggestive of lower extended emission in AGN hosts
compared to normal galaxies. This is qualitatively similar to theoretical
predictions of the X-ray surface brightness profile from AGN feedback models,
where feedback from AGN is likely to evacuate the gas from the center of the
galaxy/cluster. We propose that AGN that are intrinsically under-luminous in
X-rays, but have equivalent bolometric luminosities to our sources will be the
ideal sample to study more robustly the effect of AGN feedback on diffuse
ISM/ICM gas.Comment: Accepted in PAS
The Gibbs-Thomson formula at small island sizes - corrections for high vapour densities
In this paper we report simulation studies of equilibrium features, namely
circular islands on model surfaces, using Monte-Carlo methods. In particular,
we are interested in studying the relationship between the density of vapour
around a curved island and its curvature-the Gibbs-Thomson formula. Numerical
simulations of a lattice gas model, performed for various sizes of islands,
don't fit very well to the Gibbs-Thomson formula. We show how corrections to
this form arise at high vapour densities, wherein a knowledge of the exact
equation of state (as opposed to the ideal gas approximation) is necessary to
predict this relationship. Exploiting a mapping of the lattice gas to the Ising
model one can compute the corrections to the Gibbs-Thomson formula using high
field series expansions. We also investigate finite size effects on the
stability of the islands both theoretically and through simulations. Finally
the simulations are used to study the microscopic origins of the Gibbs-Thomson
formula. A heuristic argument is suggested in which it is partially attributed
