Water Table Level as Influenced by Rainfall, Crop Requirements, and Tiling Method
In 1979, a portion of the research farm was tiled in a pattern to provide a good soil environment for large-tillage trial plots. This was used as an opportunity to compare tile installation methods, one using a conventional trenching machine and another using a trenchless âtile plowâ machine. The tile plow inserted plastic tile using a mole approach, which opened the soil and inserted the tile without leaving an open trench that would later require backfilling. The heaving of the soil by the tile plow did require some soil manipulation to allow cropping. Past research on this study has shown that plowing and trenching methods were not significantly different and that water table measurements were influenced more by timing of water needs of the crop being grown and intensity of the rainfall events
Water Table Level as Influenced by Rainfall, Crop Requirements, and Tiling Method during the past Three Years
In 1979, a portion of the research farm was pattern tiled including the large tillage plots. This was used as an opportunity to compare tile installation methods: a conventional trenching machine (used widely prior to late 70s), and a trenchless âtile plowâ machine. The tile plow inserted plastic tile using a mole approach, which is the current primary tiling method. This research showed that plow and trenching tiling methods were not significantly different and both provided adequate drainage. It also showed that water table measurements were influenced more by timing of water needs of the crop being grown and intensity of the rainfall event than tiling method. This report focuses on continued research completed on these trial plots from 2009 to 2011 measuring water table level
Water Table Level as Influenced by Rainfall, Crop Requirements, and Tiling Method During the Past Two Years

Water Table Level as Influenced by Tiling Method
Sections of the research farm were tiled in the fall of 1979. The primary reason for the tiling was to provide a good soil environment for large tillage trial plots that had been previously established. This was also used as an opportunity to install a comparison of tile installation with a conventional (at that time) trenching machine and a relatively new system of installing the tile with a trenchless âtile plowâ machine. The tile plow inserted plastic tile using a mole approach, which opened the soil and inserted the tile without leaving an open trench, that would later require backfilling. The heaving of the soil by the tile plow did require packing and some soil manipulation to allow cropping. The primary reason for using this type of installation was cost. At the time of this installation, the cost of tiling could be reduced substantially (in some cases by over 50%) by using the plow method rather than the trench
Discovery of Five New R Coronae Borealis Stars in the MACHO Galactic Bulge Database
We have identified five new R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Galactic
bulge using the MACHO Project photometry database, raising the total number of
known Galactic RCB stars to about 40. We have obtained spectra to confirm the
identifications. The fact that four out of the five newly identified RCB stars
are ``cool'' (T(eff) 6000 K) suggests
that the preponderance of warm RCB stars among the existing sample is a
selection bias. These cool RCB stars are redder and fainter than their warm
counterparts and may have been missed in surveys done with blue plates. Based
on the number of new RCB stars discovered in the MACHO bulge fields, there may
be ~250 RCB stars in the reddened "exclusion" zone toward the bulge.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, AJ in press High resolution versions of Figures

ProtoEXIST: Advanced Prototype CZT Coded Aperture Telescopes for EXIST
{\it ProtoEXIST1} is a pathfinder for the {\it EXIST-HET}, a coded aperture
hard X-ray telescope with a 4.5 m CZT detector plane a 9070 degree
field of view to be flown as the primary instrument on the {\it EXIST} mission
and is intended to monitor the full sky every 3 h in an effort to locate GRBs
and other high energy transients. {\it ProtoEXIST1} consists of a 256 cm
tiled CZT detector plane containing 4096 pixels composed of an 88 array
of individual 1.95 cm 1.95 cm 0.5 cm CZT detector modules
each with a 8 8 pixilated anode configured as a coded aperture
telescope with a fully coded field of view employing
passive side shielding and an active CsI anti-coincidence rear shield, recently
completed its maiden flight out of Ft. Sumner, NM on the 9th of October 2009.
During the duration of its 6 hour flight on-board calibration of the detector
plane was carried out utilizing a single tagged 198.8 nCi Am-241 source along
with the simultaneous measurement of the background spectrum and an observation
of Cygnus X-1. Here we recount the events of the flight and report on the
detector performance in a near space environment. We also briefly discuss {\it
ProtoEXIST2}: the next stage of detector development which employs the {\it
NuSTAR} ASIC enabling finer (3232) anode pixilation. When completed
{\it ProtoEXIST2} will consist of a 256 cm tiled array and be flown
simultaneously with the ProtoEXIST1 telescope
Recent Trends in the Prevalence of Crohnâs Disease and Ulcerative Colitis in a Commercially Insured US Population
PurposeMost US inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) epidemiology studies conducted to date have sampled small, geographically restricted populations and have not examined time trends. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of Crohnâs disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in a commercially insured US population and compare prevalences across sociodemographic characteristics and time.MethodsUsing claims data from approximately 12 million Americans, we performed three consecutive 2-year cross-sectional studies. Cases of CD and UC were identified using a previously described algorithm. Prevalence was estimated by dividing cases by individuals in the source population. Logistic regression was used to compare prevalences by region, age, and sex.ResultsIn 2009, the prevalences of CD and UC in children were 58 [95% confidence interval (CI) 55â60] and 34 (95% CI 32â36), respectively. In adults, the respective prevalences were 241 (95% CI 238â245) and 263 (95% CI 260â266). Data analysis revealed that IBD prevalences have slightly increased over time. Based on census data, an estimated 1,171,000 Americans have IBD (565,000 CD and 593,000 UC).ConclusionsAnalysis of the epidemiological data revealed an increasing burden of IBD in recent years, which may be used to inform policy
'This is what democracy looks like' : New Labour's blind spot and peripheral vision
New Labour in government since 1997 has been roundly criticized for not possessing a clear, coherent and consistent democratic vision. The absence of such a grand vision has resulted, from this critical perspective, in an absence of 'joined-up' thinking about democracy in an evolving multi-level state. Tensions have been all too apparent between the government's desire to exert central direction - manifested in its most pathological form as 'control freakery' - and its democratising initiatives derived from 'third-way' obsessions with 'decentralising', 'empowering' and 'enabling'. The purpose of this article is to examine why New Labour displayed such apparently impaired democratic vision and why it appeared incapable of conceiving of democratic reform 'in the round'. This article seeks to explain these apparent paradoxes, however, through utilising the notion of 'macular degeneration'. In this analysis, the perceived democratic blind spot of New Labour at Westminster is connected to a democratic peripheral vision, which has envisaged innovative participatory and decentred initiatives in governance beyond Westminster
Enrollment factors and bias of disease prevalence estimates in administrative claims data
Considerations for using administrative claims data in research have not been well-described. To increase awareness of how enrollment factors and insurance benefit use may contribute to observed estimates, we evaluated how differences in operational definitions of the cohort impacted estimates of disease prevalence
Age before stage: insulin resistance rises before the onset of puberty: a 9-year longitudinal study (EarlyBird 26).
OBJECTIVE: Insulin resistance (IR) is associated with diabetes. IR is higher during puberty in both sexes, with some studies showing the increase to be independent of changes in adiposity. Few longitudinal studies have reported on children, and it remains unclear when the rise in IR that is often attributed to puberty really begins. We sought to establish from longitudinal data its relationship to pubertal onset, and interactions with age, sex, adiposity, and IGF-1. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The EarlyBird Diabetes study is a longitudinal prospective cohort study of healthy children aged 5-14 years. Homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR), skinfolds (SSF), adiposity (percent fat, measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), serum leptin, and IGF-1 were measured annually in 235 children (134 boys). Pubertal onset was adduced from Tanner stage (TS) and from the age at which luteinizing hormone (LH) first became serially detectable (â„0.2 international units/L). RESULTS: IR rose progressively from age 7 years, 3-4 years before TS2 was reached or LH became detectable. Rising adiposity and IGF-1 together explained 34% of the variance in IR in boys and 35% in girls (both P < 0.001) over the 3 years preceding pubertal onset. The contribution of IGF-1 to IR was greater in boys, despite their comparatively lower IGF-1 levels. CONCLUSIONS: IR starts to rise in mid-childhood, some years before puberty. Its emergence relates more to the age of the child than to pubertal onset. More than 60% of the variation in IR prior to puberty was unexplained. The demography of childhood diabetes is changing, and prepubertal IR may be important
