The Hornblende-Aegirine Augite Reaction Relationships of the Trunk Lake Granite, Maine
Textural relationships indicate that the structure of aegirine augite controlled the secondary formation of hornblende in the Tunk Lake granite. In the marginal rocks of the granite body some grains of aegirine augite may be partially or completely enclosed by hornblende. Hornblende also replaces aegirine augite along fractures. Extensive replacement results in grains which have small cores of aegirine augite surrounded by hornblende. Cleavage patterns and optical orientations of the two minerals indicate that their c axes are parallel. Pyroxene can be transformed to hornblende by a minor shift in orientation of its basic tetrahedral structure. Chemical changes necessary in the transformation are the addition of water, a slight decrease in sodium and the substitution of some aluminum for silicon. The transformation of aegirine augite to hornblende was caused by an increase in magma water vapor pressure and a decrease in temperature
Empirical ugri-UBVRc Transformations for Galaxies
We present empirical color transformations between Sloan Digital Sky Survey
ugri and Johnson-Cousins UBVRc photometry for nearby galaxies (D < 11 Mpc). We
use the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) galaxy sample where there are 90 galaxies
with overlapping observational coverage for these two filter sets. The LVL
galaxy sample consists of normal, non-starbursting galaxies. We also examine
how well the LVL galaxy colors are described by previous transformations
derived from standard calibration stars and model-based galaxy templates. We
find significant galaxy color scatter around most of the previous
transformation relationships. In addition, the previous transformations show
systematic offsets between transformed and observed galaxy colors which are
visible in observed color-color trends. The LVL-based transformations
show no systematic color offsets and reproduce the observed color-color galaxy

Spitzer Local Volume Legacy (LVL) SEDs and Physical Properties
We present the panchromatic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the Local
Volume Legacy (LVL) survey which consists of 258 nearby galaxies (11 Mpc).
The wavelength coverage spans the ultraviolet to the infrared (1500
to 24 m) which is utilized to derive global physical
properties (i.e., star formation rate, stellar mass, internal extinction due to
dust.). With these data, we find color-color relationships and correlated
trends between observed and physical properties (i.e., optical magnitudes and
dust properties, optical color and specific star formation rate, and
ultraviolet-infrared color and metallicity). The SEDs are binned by different
galaxy properties to reveal how each property affects the observed shape of
these SEDs. In addition, due to the volume-limited nature of LVL, we utilize
the dwarf-dominated galaxy sample to test star formation relationships
established with higher-mass galaxy samples. We find good agreement with the
star-forming "main-sequence" relationship, but find a systematic deviation in
the infrared "main-sequence" at low luminosities. This deviation is attributed
to suppressed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formation in low
metallicity environments and/or the destruction of PAHs in more intense
radiation fields occurring near a suggested threshold in sSFR at a value of

Can a combination of the conformal thin-sandwich and puncture methods yield binary black hole solutions in quasi-equilibrium?
We consider combining two important methods for constructing
quasi-equilibrium initial data for binary black holes: the conformal
thin-sandwich formalism and the puncture method. The former seeks to enforce
stationarity in the conformal three-metric and the latter attempts to avoid
internal boundaries, like minimal surfaces or apparent horizons. We show that
these two methods make partially conflicting requirements on the boundary
conditions that determine the time slices. In particular, it does not seem
possible to construct slices that are quasi-stationary and avoid physical
singularities and simultaneously are connected by an everywhere positive lapse
function, a condition which must obtain if internal boundaries are to be
avoided. Some relaxation of these conflicting requirements may yield a soluble
system, but some of the advantages that were sought in combining these

The Spitzer Local Volume Legacy (LVL) Global Optical Photometry
We present the global optical photometry of 246 galaxies in the Local Volume
Legacy (LVL) survey. The full volume-limited sample consists of 258 nearby (D <
11 Mpc) galaxies whose absolute B-band magnitude span a range of -9.6 < M_B <
-20.7 mag. A composite optical (UBVR) data set is constructed from observed
UBVR and SDSS ugriz imaging, where the ugriz magnitudes are transformed into
UBVR. We present photometry within three galaxy apertures defined at UV,
optical, and IR wavelengths. Flux comparisons between these apertures reveal
that the traditional optical R25 galaxy apertures do not fully encompass
extended sources. Using the larger IR apertures we find color-color
relationships where later-type spiral and irregular galaxies tend to be bluer
than earlier-type galaxies. These data provide the missing optical emission
from which future LVL studies can construct the full panchromatic

Community Conflicts over Intensive Livestock Operations: How and Why Do Such Conflicts Escalate?
Why do community groups and individuals oppose establishment of intensive scale livestock operations in communities? Why have established forms of economic activity become the pariah of rural communities across the nation? In December 1997, the Pennsylvania Senate passed Resolution 91. This article addresses the results of a research project funded by the state Department of Agriculture in response to Senate Resolution 91, directing the Secretary of Agriculture to develop a model of community dispute resolution to address community conflicts involving intensive livestock operations ( ILOs ). Specifically this article addresses project findings detailing why conflicts over ILOs arise and how they escalate
The Infrared Spectra of Very Large Irregular Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): Observational Probes of Astronomical PAH Geometry, Size and Charge
The mid-IR spectra of six large, irregular PAHs with formulae (C84H24 -
C120H36) have been computed using Density Functional Theory (DFT). Trends in
the dominant band positions and intensities are compared to those of large,
compact PAHs as a function of geometry, size and charge. Irregular edge
moieties that are common in terrestrial PAHs, such as bay regions and rings
with quartet hydrogens, are shown to be uncommon in astronomical PAHs. As for
all PAHs comprised solely of C and H reported to date, mid-IR emission from
irregular PAHs fails to produce a strong CCstr band at 6.2 um, the position
characteristic of the important, class A astronomical PAH spectra. Earlier
studies showed inclusion of nitrogen within a PAH shifts this to 6.2 um for PAH
cations. Here we show this band shifts to 6.3 um in nitrogenated PAH anions,
close to the position of the CC stretch in class B astronomical PAH spectra.
Thus nitrogenated PAHs may be important in all sources and the peak position of
the CC stretch near 6.2 um appears to directly reflect the PAH cation to anion
ratio. Large irregular PAHs exhibit features at 7.8 um but lack them near 8.6
um. Hence, the 7.7 um astronomical feature is produced by a mixture of small
and large PAHs while the 8.6 um band can only be produced by large compact
PAHs. As with the CCstr, the position and profile of these bands reflect the
PAH cation to anion ratio.Comment: accepted by Ap
Envelope determinants of equine lentiviral vaccine protection
Lentiviral envelope (Env) antigenic variation and associated immune evasion present major obstacles to vaccine development. The concept that Env is a critical determinant for vaccine efficacy is well accepted, however defined correlates of protection associated with Env variation have yet to be determined. We reported an attenuated equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) vaccine study that directly examined the effect of lentiviral Env sequence variation on vaccine efficacy. The study identified a significant, inverse, linear correlation between vaccine efficacy and increasing divergence of the challenge virus Env gp90 protein compared to the vaccine virus gp90. The report demonstrated approximately 100% protection of immunized ponies from disease after challenge by virus with a homologous gp90 (EV0), and roughly 40% protection against challenge by virus (EV13) with a gp90 13% divergent from the vaccine strain. In the current study we examine whether the protection observed when challenging with the EV0 strain could be conferred to animals via chimeric challenge viruses between the EV0 and EV13 strains, allowing for mapping of protection to specific Env sequences. Viruses containing the EV13 proviral backbone and selected domains of the EV0 gp90 were constructed and in vitro and in vivo infectivity examined. Vaccine efficacy studies indicated that homology between the vaccine strain gp90 and the N-terminus of the challenge strain gp90 was capable of inducing immunity that resulted in significantly lower levels of post-challenge virus and significantly delayed the onset of disease. However, a homologous N-terminal region alone inserted in the EV13 backbone could not impart the 100% protection observed with the EV0 strain. Data presented here denote the complicated and potentially contradictory relationship between in vitro virulence and in vivo pathogenicity. The study highlights the importance of structural conformation for immunogens and emphasizes the need for antibody binding, not neutralizing, assays that correlate with vaccine protection
