Technology needs for high speed rotorcraft (3)
The spectrum of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) type aircraft is examined to determine which aircraft are most likely to achieve high subsonic cruise speeds and have hover qualities similar to a helicopter. Two civil mission profiles are considered: a 600-n.mi. mission for a 15- and a 30-passenger payload. Applying current technology, only the 15- and 30-passenger tiltfold aircraft are capable of attaining the 450-knot design goal. The two tiltfold aircraft at 450 knots and a 30-passenger tiltrotor at 375 knots were further developed for the Task II technology analysis. A program called High-Speed Total Envelope Proprotor (HI-STEP) is recommended to meet several of these issues based on the tiltrotor concept. A program called Tiltfold System (TFS) is recommended based on the tiltrotor concept. A task is identified to resolve the best design speed from productivity and demand considerations based on the technology that emerges from the recommended programs. HI-STEP's goals are to investigate propulsive efficiency, maneuver loads, and aeroelastic stability. Programs currently in progress that may meet the other technology needs include the Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology (IHPTET) (NASA Lewis) and the Advanced Structural Concepts Program funded through NASA Langley
For The Kingdom
For The Kingdom is a tabletop board game that I have developed for my thesis. In my thesis, I would like to cover three areas that have been crucial to the development of the game- the guidebook created to support and facilitate the board game, the changes made due to player feedback and testing, and the potential paths to getting the game to the market. Before Talking about those three areas, however, I will first describe the games genre and a bit about my approach to developing it

Geological mapping of the Hokusai (H05) quadrangle of Mercury: Status update
[Introduction] MESSENGER data are being used to construct ~1:3M scale quadrangle geological maps of Mercury. Here, we present our progress mapping the Hokusai (H05) quadrangle

Post-deposition (and ongoing?) modification of Caloris ejecta blocks
Mercuryâs circum-Caloris region hosts numerous kilometer-scale knobs. If these land-forms, peculiar to Caloris, are its ejecta, then they can provide insight into the deep materials of the planet
Constructional Volcanic Edifices on Mercury: Candidates and Hypotheses of Formation
Mercury, a planet with a predominantly volcanic crust, has perplexingly few, if any, constructional volcanic edifices, despite their common occurrence on other solar system bodies with volcanic histories. Using image and topographical data from the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft, we describe two small (< 15 kmâdiameter) prominences with shallow summit depressions associated with volcanically flooded impact features. We offer both volcanic and impactârelated interpretations for their formation, and then compare these landforms with volcanic features on Earth and the Moon. Though we cannot definitively conclude that these landforms are volcanic, the paucity of constructional volcanic edifices on Mercury is intriguing in itself. We suggest that this lack is because volcanic eruptions with sufficiently low eruption volumes, rates, and flow lengths, suitable for edifice construction, were highly spatiotemporally restricted during Mercury's geological history. We suggest that volcanic edifices may preferentially occur in association with lateâstage, postâimpact effusive volcanic deposits. The ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury will be able to investigate further our candidate volcanic edifices, search for other, asâyet unrecognized edifices beneath the detection limits of MESSENGER data, and test our hypothesis that edifice construction is favored by lateâstage, lowâvolume effusive eruptions
Geology of the Hokusai quadrangle (H05), Mercury
The Hokusai (H05) quadrangle is in Mercuryâs northern mid-latitudes (0â90°E, 22.5â65°N) and covers almost 5 million km2, or 6.5%, of the planetâs surface. We have used data from the MESSENGER spacecraft to make the first geological map of H05. Linework was digitized at 1:400,000-scale for final presentation at 1:3,000,000-scale, mainly using a âŒ166â
m/pixel monochrome basemap. Three major photogeologic units of regional extent were mapped: intercrater, intermediate, and smooth plains. Materials of cratersââ„â20â
km in diameter were classified according to their degradation state. Two classification schemes were employed in parallel, one with three classes and the other with five classes, for compatibility with existing MESSENGER-era quadrangle maps and the first global geologic map. This map will provide science context and targets for the ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury
Definition and Characteristic Features of a âCultural Flashpointâ: A case study of Exploring Masculinities, a controversial gender and education programme in Ireland
The concept âcultural flashpointâ (CF) has not been fully defined or described. The authors test this concept through the prism of a controversial gender-focused Irish school programme, Exploring Masculinities (EM). Adopting an instrumental case study methodology, they use media content analysis to develop a temporal trajectory of the CF, describe its shape, explicit and implied contentious themes, and its process. They identify characteristic features of a cultural flashpoint: (i) a focal issue, event and/or object; (ii) conflict; (iii) bounded time period; (iv) the involvement of exo- and multi-sectoral individuals and groups; (v) randomness, opaqueness and conflation among its expressions; and (vi) broadly cultural and not confined to its sector of origin. They offer a definition of a CF and suggest it as a conceptual device for identifying, analysing and understanding contestation about educational (and other) change occurring in the context of wider and more long-standing cultural, social and political movements
Interstitial nitrides revisited - a simple synthesis of MxMo3N (M = Fe, Co, Ni)
The efficient synthesis of polycrystalline filled beta-Mn structured Ni2Mo3N, and the eta-carbides Fe3Mo3N and Co3Mo3N, by a single heating of metal powders at 975 ÂșC under a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture is reported. Rietveld analysis of high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data shows that the reduction-nitridation of NiMoO4 produces Ni2Mo3N and nickel; Ni3Mo3N is not obtained in this way and its existence is disproved
