    On the multi-decadal oscillation of Atlantic tropical storm activity

    Long term Atlantic tropical storm activity is described by the time series of the yearly Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) Index for the time interval 1851-2007. ACE is a measure of total wind energy for North Atlantic basin and land falling tropical cyclone activity. Since the ACE index reflects a combination of storm intensity and duration it is a better measure of overall activity and likely damage than the number of either basin or land falling tropical storms or hurricanes. The yearly ACE time series is non-stationary, and one step toward detecting possible long-term quasi-periods is to detrend the original data. In this paper we use a procedure for data transformation by which ACE index is fitted in least square sense with polynomials of increasing order, followed by detrend. It is shown that, with some approximation, the obtained time series is cyclostationary, and a multi-decadal oscillation is detectable, as indicated by the power spectrum analysis

    Emotional Eating Sustainability in Romania—A Questionnaire-Based Study

    Background: In Romania, there is little information regarding emotional eating and risk profile for obesity in eating disorders. Therefore, our purpose was to estimate the relationship between demographic, anthropometric, and emotional eating profiles among the Romanian adult population. Methods: The present study is descriptive and cross-sectional, involving 674 Romanian participants who answered the online questionnaire, which was developed and validated in 2019 through a European project. SPSS Statistics v.25 was used for statistical analyses, the Spearman test for linear regression, and Cronbach’s alpha for the evaluation of the internal consistency of the scales. Results: The mean age of the studied population (mostly women, 67.95%) was 38.13 ± 13.41 years old, and the mean BMI (calculated based on self-declared weight and height) was 24.63 ± 4.39 kg/m2; both measures are significantly higher in men than in women. BMI was also significantly higher in participants using food as an escape from situations such as stress, loneliness, feeling depressed, or as an emotional consolation. This behavior was observed especially in the elderly, similar to other European countries. Conclusion: Our data contribute to a better understanding of emotional eating in Romania, and we hope to improve public health policies, with the goal of preventing obesity and chronic related disorders.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Co-infection with Babesia canis and Borrelia burgdorferi S.L. in a dog from Northeastern Romania: a case report

    This study describes a clinical case of a 9-year-old mixed-breed dog coinfected with Babesia canis and Borrelia burgdorferi. This dog was referred to a private clinic in northeastern Romania for a recurrent perianal tumour and a mild inflammation in the right elbow. The dog showed mild haemolytic anaemia, as well as increased alkaline phosphatase and glucose levels. Despite surgery and therapy, after four days, the patient had developed hyperthermia, severe anaemia and an inflammatory syndrome. The blood smear revealed the presence of piroplasm organisms identified as ‘large’ Babesia spp. On the 9th day of hospitalization the patient died during the blood transfusion, before applying the specific therapy for babesiosis. The blood collected before blood transfusion was tested for the following vector-borne diseases: Babesia spp., Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Hepatozoon spp. and Borrelia spp. using molecular analysis. The final outcome indicated a co-infection with Babesia canis and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. In conclusion, the introduction of vectorborne disease screening approach prior any surgical procedure can prevent lifethreatening events and improve diagnostic accuracy in dogs infected/co-infected simultaneously with different vector-borne diseases

    The Romanian version of the Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR)

    The Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR) is a new parent/patient-reported outcome measure that enables a thorough assessment of the disease status in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We report the results of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the parent and patient versions of the JAMAR in the Romanian language. The reading comprehension of the questionnaire was tested in 15 JIA parents and patients. Each participating centre was asked to collect demographic, clinical data and the JAMAR in 100 consecutive JIA patients or all consecutive patients seen in a 6-month period and to administer the JAMAR to 100 healthy children and their parents. The statistical validation phase explored descriptive statistics and the psychometric issues of the JAMAR: the three Likert assumptions, floor/ceiling effects, internal consistency, Cronbach\u2019s alpha, interscale correlations, test\u2013retest reliability, and construct validity (convergent and discriminant validity). A total of 310 JIA patients (11.9% systemic, 21.6% oligoarticular, 31.9% RF-negative polyarthritis, 34.6% other categories) and 100 healthy children, were enrolled in six centres. The JAMAR components discriminated well healthy subjects from JIA patients except for the health-related quality of life psychosocial health subscales. All JAMAR components revealed good psychometric performances. In conclusion, the Romanian version of the JAMAR is a valid tool for the assessment of children with JIA and is suitable for use both in routine clinical practice and clinical research

    Challenges in Dental Imaging – Edge and Texture Analysis in Caries Detection

    One of the most frequent diseases all over the world is represented by dental caries, hence it is of utmost importance to detect them as early as possible, in order to prevent massive tooth decay. Next to clinical examination, radiographic images are essential in identifying caries, especially for lesions located on the contact surface between the posterior teeth. Incipient caries are difficult to identify, sometimes even for specialists, so segmentation and detection through various image processing techniques may be useful. This paper presents an analysis of edge and texture parameters in X-rays containing caries, based on Sobel and Canny operators, Gabor filters and local binary pattern (LBP) operator. Our study set consisted in 80 X-rays from Bitewing Radiography Caries Detection Challenge 2015. Final results align with literature results and confirm the fact that caries segmentation in X-rays is a difficult task, with an average of less than 35% edge pixels correctly identified and poor results for texture segmentation; they also motivate us to refine our work in search of new algorithms and methods for caries segmentation and detection

    Current data regarding homeostasis of tissues oxygenation in pathophysiological and therapeutic circumstances

    Oxygen is essential for cellular respiration and energy production. Tissue oxygenation refers to delivering oxygen to cells throughout the body. Microcirculation brings blood through small sanguine vessels to maintain the cells' supply of nutrients and oxygen. Optimal tissue oxygenation and microcirculation are essential for maintaining healthy tissue. Conversely, poor oxygenation can cause tissue damage, impair wound healing, and increase infection risk. Several factors can affect tissue oxygenation and microcirculation, including age, lifestyle factors (such as smoking and stress), and underlying medical conditions (such as diabetes and high blood pressure). To improve tissue oxygenation and microcirculation, individuals can engage in healthy lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, healthy eating, stress management, and avoiding smoking. Tissue oxygenation can also be looked therapeutic, given that topical and cosmetic treatments such as massage, pelotherapy, hydrotherapy, moisturizers, and certain skin care products can help pro-mote healthy microcirculation at the somatic level. In the scientific literature, the focus is on hypoxia rather than tissue oxygenation. This article proposes a paradigm shift and emphasizes the homeostatic importance of microcirculation and tissue oxygenation in pathophysiological and therapeutic circumstances. The systematic review of the data from the last 2 years (2021-2022) and the meta-analysis performed on tissue oxygenation will contribute to the practical approach to the pathology circumscribed to tissue oxygenation
