    Porphyromonas gingivalis is a bacterium associated with chronic periodontitis that possesses a family of genes encoding hemagglutinins required for heme acquisition. In this study we generated ΔhagB and ΔhagC mutants in strain W83 and demonstrate that both hagB and hagC are required for adherence to oral epithelial cells. Unexpectedly, a double ΔhagB/ΔhagC mutant had less severe adherence defects than either of the single mutants, but was found to exhibit increased expression of the gingipain-encoding genes rgpA and kgp, suggesting that a ΔhagB/ΔhagC mutant is only viable in populations of cells that exhibit increased expression of genes involved in heme acquisition. Disruption of hagB in the fimbriated strain ATCC33277 demonstrated that HagB is also required for stable attachment of fimbriated bacteria to oral epithelial cells. Mutants of hagC were also found to form defective single and multi-species biofilms that had reduced biomass relative to biofilms formed by the wild-type strain. This study highlights the hitherto unappreciated importance of these genes in oral colonization and biofilm formation

    The employment outcomes of a group of jobless poor Oregonians are tracked in order to analyze the relative importance of local labor market conditions on their employment outcomes. Local job growth increases the probability that a jobless poor adult will get a job and shortens the length of time until she finds a job.     Accounting for the Decline in AFDC Caseloads: Welfare Reform or Economic Growth?

    Nationwide, AFDC caseloads have decreased by about 18 percent since March 1994, while some states, such as Wisconsin, Indiana, and Oregon, have seen declines of 40 percent or more. Two factors are frequently suggested as possible causes: state-level experiments with welfare reform and strong economic growth. In this paper, we use state-level monthly panel data from 1987 to 1996 to assess the importance of each of these factors by estimating a model of AFDC caseloads as a dynamic function of time-dependent state welfare reform variables (welfare waivers) and economic variables such as per capita employment. Our results from the dynamic model suggest that the decline in per capita AFDC caseloads is attributable largely to the economic growth of states and not to waivers from federal welfare policies. In the 26 states experiencing at least a 20 percent decline in per capita AFDC caseloads between 1993 and 1996, we attribute 78 percent of the decline to business-cycle factors and 6 percent to welfare waivers.

    Principal Component Analysis of SDSS Stellar Spectra

    We apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to ~100,000 stellar spectra obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In order to avoid strong non-linear variation of spectra with effective temperature, the sample is binned into 0.02 mag wide intervals of the g-r color (-0.20<g-r<0.90, roughly corresponding to MK spectral types A3 to K3), and PCA is applied independently for each bin. In each color bin, the first four eigenspectra are sufficient to describe the observed spectra within the measurement noise. We discuss correlations of eigencoefficients with metallicity and gravity estimated by the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) Stellar Parameters Pipeline. The resulting high signal-to-noise mean spectra and the other three eigenspectra are made publicly available. These data can be used to generate high quality spectra for an arbitrary combination of effective temperature, metallicity, and gravity within the parameter space probed by the SDSS. The SDSS stellar spectroscopic database and the PCA results presented here offer a convenient method to classify new spectra, to search for unusual spectra, to train various spectral classification methods, and to synthesize accurate colors in arbitrary optical bandpasses.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, accepted by the Astronomical Journa

    Randomised controlled trial of specialist nurse intervention in heart failure

    &lt;p&gt;Objectives. To determine whether specialist nurse intervention improves outcome in patients with chronic heart failure.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Design. Randomised controlled trial.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Setting. Acute medical admissions unit in a teaching hospital.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Participants. 165 patients admitted with heart failure due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction. The intervention started before discharge and continued thereafter with home visits for up to 1 year.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Main outcome measures. Time to first event analysis of death from all causes or readmission to hospital with worsening heart failure.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Results. 31 patients (37%) in the intervention group died or were readmitted with heart failure compared with 45 (53%) in the usual care group (hazard ratio=0.61, 95% confidence interval 0.33 to 0.96).Compared with usual care, patients in the intervention group had fewer readmissions for any reason (86 v 114, P=0.018), fewer admissions for heart failure (19 v 45, P&#60;0.001) and spent fewer days in hospital for heart failure (mean 3.43 v 7.46 days, P=0.0051).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Conclusions. Specially trained nurses can improve the outcome of patients admitted to hospital with heart failure.&lt;/p&gt
