The MPCP Longitudinal Educational Growth Study Third Year Report

This is the third-year report in a five-year evaluation of the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP). The MPCP, which began in 1990, provides government-funded vouchers for low-income children to attend private schools in the City of Milwaukee. The maximum voucher amount in 2008-09 was $6,607, and approximately 20,000 children used a voucher to attend either secular or religious private schools. The MPCP is the oldest and largest urban school voucher program in the United States. This evaluation was authorized by Wisconsin Act 125 enacted in 2005

A Radio Perspective on the Wet Merger Remnant NGC 34

We present VLA observations of the neutral hydrogen and radio continuum of NGC 34 (= NGC 17 = Mrk 938). This object is an ideal candidate to study the fate of gas in mergers, since, as shown by an optical study done by Schweizer & Seitzer (2007), it is a gas-rich ("wet") merger remnant of two disk galaxies of unequal mass hosting a strong central starburst and a weak AGN. We detect HI emission from both tidal tails and from nearby galaxies, suggesting that NGC 34 is actually part of a gas-rich group and might have recently interacted with one of its companions. The kinematics of the gas suggests this remnant is forming an outer disk of neutral hydrogen from the gas of the northern tail. We also detect broad HI absorption (514 +/- 21 km/s wide) at both negative and positive velocities with respect to the systemic velocity. This absorption could be explained by the motions of the tidal tails or by the presence of a circumnuclear disk. In addition, we present radio-continuum images that show both nuclear (62.4 +/- 0.3 mJy) and extra-nuclear emission (26.5 +/- 3.0 mJy). The extra-nuclear component is very diffuse and in the shape of two radio lobes, spanning 390 kpc overall. This emission could be a signature of an AGN that has turned off, or it could originate from a starburst-driven superwind. We discuss the possible scenarios that explain our observations, and what they tell us about the location of the gas and the future evolution of NGC 34.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. Long term outcomes following hospital admission for sepsis using relative survival analysis: a prospective Cohort study of 1,092 patients with 5 year follow up

Background: Sepsis is a leading cause of death in intensive care units and is increasing in incidence. Current trials of novel therapeutic approaches for sepsis focus on 28-day mortality as the primary outcome measure, but excess mortality may extend well beyond this time period.Methods: We used relative survival analysis to examine excess mortality in a cohort of 1,028 patients admitted to a tertiary referral hospital with sepsis during 2007–2008, over the first 5 years of follow up. Expected survival was estimated using the Ederer II method, using Australian life tables as the reference population. Cumulative and interval specific relative survival were estimated by age group, sex, sepsis severity and Indigenous status.Results: Patients were followed for a median of 4.5 years (range 0–5.2). Of the 1028 patients, the mean age was 46.9 years, 52% were male, 228 (22.2%) had severe sepsis and 218 (21%) died during the follow up period. Mortality based on cumulative relative survival exceeded that of the reference population for the first 2 years post admission in the whole cohort and for the first 3 years in the subgroup with severe sepsis. Independent predictors of mortality over the whole follow up period were male sex, Indigenous Australian ethnicity, older age, higher Charlson Comorbidity Index, and sepsis-related organ dysfunction at presentation.Conclusions: The mortality rate of patients hospitalised with sepsis exceeds that of the general population until 2 years post admission. Efforts to improve outcomes from sepsis should examine longer term outcomes than the traditional primary endpoints of 28-day and 90-day mortality

Age Differences in Personality Structure

1 pageMost investigations in the structure of personality traits do not adequately address age, as few studies look at the structure of personality traits a-theoretically, instead presupposing a theoretical structure e.g., Big Five. As a result, the relationship among indicators within a trait (coherence) are often highlighted but relationships across traits (differentiation) are not thoroughly examined. Using a large-scale sample of 369,151 individuals ranging in age from 14 to 90, the present study examines whether personality indicators show differential relationships as a function of age. Results indicate that coherence shows few changes across the lifespan, while differentiation weakens across adulthood into old age. These finding suggest that Big Five indicators only parallel the Big Five structure among young but not older adults. Thus, using standard Big Five personality trait assessments in older adults may, at best, not reflect reality and, at worse, undermine the predictive utility of personality traits

Personality Trait Descriptors: 2,818 Trait Descriptive Adjectives Characterized by Familiarity, Frequency of Use, and Prior Use in Psycholexical Research

9 pagesThis dataset contains 2,818 trait descriptive adjectives in English and information about the extent to which each term is known among a large and approximately representative sample of U.S. adults. The list of personality-related terms includes all 1,710 adjectives previously studied by Goldberg (1982) and draws on prior work by Allport and Odbert (1936) and Norman (1967). The extent to which terms were known by respondents was based on the administration of vocabulary questions about each term-definition pair online to a sample of English-speaking U.S. residents with approximately average literacy levels. The open data are accompanied by an online database that allows the terms to be searched and filtered.As an extension of prior work on the lexical structure of personality descriptors, it is important to acknowledge that this resource builds on the substantial contributions of Gordon Allport, Henry Odbert, Warren Norman, Lew Goldberg, and the unnamed colleagues who assisted them.
