Incorporation of probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium ssp.) in Argentinean ovine cheese

The market of cheeses from ewe’s milk has been growing steadily in Argentina. The nutritional benefits of these products can be enhanced by adding probiotic cultures. In the present study, the survival of a mix of probiotic microorganisms (Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis Bb12) in a semi-hard ovine cheese, manufactured with a technology previously developed in our institute was evaluated. Besides, the effect of its incorporation on the chemical composition and ripening parameters of cheeses, including the fatty acid composition and CLA production, was investigated. Experimental cheeses made with Bb12 and La-5 retained counts of the probiotic strains at the required therapeutic level (107 CFU g−1 ). No significant differences were detected between experimental and control cheeses with respect to the different parameters evaluated: gross composition, nitrogen fractions, lipolysis, fatty acids profiles of cheese fat including CLA, and volatile fraction. Results demonstrated that the ovine cheese matrix seems to be suitable for delivery of probiotic microorganisms.Fil: Perotti, Maria Cristina. Incremental Peritoneal Dialysis Favourably Compares with Hemodialysis as a Bridge to Renal Transplantation

Background. The value of incremental peritoneal dialysis (PD) as a bridge to renal transplantation (Tx) has not been specifically addressed. Methods. All consecutive Stage 5 CKD patients with at least 1 year predialysis followup, starting incremental PD or HD under our care and subsequently receiving their first renal Tx were included in this observational cohort study. Age, gender, BMI, underlying nephropathy, residual renal function (RRF) loss rate before dialysis and RRF at RRT start, comorbidity, RRT schedules and adequacy measures, dialysis-related morbidity, Tx waiting time, RRF at Tx, incidence of delayed graft function (DGF), in-hospital stay for Tx, serum creatinine at discharge and one year later were collected and compared between patients on incremental PD or HD before Tx. Results. Seventeen patients on incremental PD and 24 on HD received their first renal Tx during the study period. Age, underlying nephropathy, RRF loss rate in predialysis, RRF at the start of RRT and comorbidity did not differ significantly. While on dialysis, patients on PD had significantly lower epoetin requirements, serum phosphate, calciumxphosphate product and better RRF preservation. Delayed graft function (DGF) occurred in 12 patients (29%), 1 on incremental PD and 11 on HD. Serum creatinine at discharge and 1 year later was significantly higher in patients who had been on HD. Conclusions. In patients receiving their first renal Tx, previous incremental PD was associated with low morbidity, excellent preservation of RRF, easier attainment of adequacy targets and significantly better immediate and 1-year graft function than those observed in otherwise well-matched patients previously treated with HD

Culture-level dimensions of social axioms and their correlates across 41 cultures

Leung and colleagues have revealed a five-dimensional structure of social axioms across individuals from five cultural groups. The present research was designed to reveal the culture level factor structure of social axioms and its correlates across 41 nations. An ecological factor analysis on the 60 items of the Social Axioms Survey extracted two factors: Dynamic Externality correlates with value measures tapping collectivism, hierarchy, and conservatism and with national indices indicative of lower social development. Societal Cynicism is less strongly and broadly correlated with previous values measures or other national indices and seems to define a novel cultural syndrome. Its national correlates suggest that it taps the cognitive component of a cultural constellation labeled maleficence, a cultural syndrome associated with a general mistrust of social systems and other people. Discussion focused on the meaning of these national level factors of beliefs and on their relationships with individual level factors of belief derived from the same data set.(undefined

Reflexões sobre o Uso de Documentos de Patentes em Cursos de Graduação

O presente artigo tem como objetivo principal apresentar considerações sobre o uso da informação patentária por alunos de graduação. Apresenta, como exemplo de inclusão do tema no âmbito acadêmico, a Atividade Curricular de Integração entre Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão desenvolvida na Universidade Federal de São Carlos, com foco na recuperação e uso da informação patentária no Brasil. O emprego de informações contidas em documentos de patentes nas diversas atividades dos cursos de graduação é recomendado como forma de incentivar a utilização dessa importante fonte de informação tecnológica.<br>The main aim of this article is to present considerations regarding the use of patent information by undergraduate students. As an example of inclusion of this theme in the academic field, it presents the Curricular Activity of Integration between Teaching, Research and Outside Activities with the community developed at the Federal University of São Carlos, focusing on the retrieval and use of patent information in Brazil. The use of information contained in patent documents in the various activities of the undergraduate courses is recommended as a way of stimulating the use of this important source of technological information

A notícia como fonte de informação em propriedade intelectual: um olhar sobre o tema marcas

  Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar o tratamento que é dado atualmente pela mídia sobre o tema marcas, especificamente em sites de notícias disponibilizadas gratuitamente na Internet. Através da aplicação do Método de Análise de Conteúdo pretendeu-se verificar a seguinte hipótese: as notícias veiculadas não informam adequadamente o leitor sobre a importância e a necessidade do registro de marcas para a proteção do trabalho intelectual. Foram analisados textos jornalísticos recuperados nos sites da Folha Online e do EstadãoOnline, publicados no período de julho de 2007 a julho 2008. Como resultado da aplicação do método, verificou-se, dentro do universo pesquisado, que a hipótese é verdadeira para o caso de leitores não especialistas em propriedade intelectual, pois os textos não são capazes de orientar uma pessoa leiga sobre o tema. Entretanto, observou-se que, para os já conhecedores do assunto, as notícias fornecem um cenário interessante sobre os problemas relacionados ao não registro de uma marca e uso indevido da mesma, podendo ser consideradas uma boa fonte de informação para negócios relacionada ao assunto

A temática do desenvolvimento sustentável em grupos de pesquisa <p> The sustainable development thematic in the research groups

A inovação tecnológica trouxe para o debate a questão do desenvolvimento tecnológico sustentável. O artigo apresenta um conjunto de reflexões teóricas sobre os temas ciência,tecnologia e desenvolvimento sustentável e aponta as contribuições da Ciência da Informação, enquanto ciência interdisciplinar, para a compreensão do desenvolvimento sustentável. Com base neste referencial foi realizada uma investigação, de natureza exploratória descritiva comabordagem quanti-qualitativa, tendo como objetivo principal identificar a presença da temática do desenvolvimento sustentável em grupos de pesquisa da UFSCar cadastrados noDiretório de Grupos de Pesquisa no Brasil/CNPq. Os resultados apontaram que a temática do desenvolvimento sustentável está presente em onze grupos de pesquisa da UFSCar distribuídas em diferentes áreas de conhecimento. Comparando os dados obtidos com os grupos de pesquisa do país que participaram do Censo 2004 do Diretório de Grupos de Pesquisa no Brasil/CNPq verificou-se que há similaridade entre ambos os achados. De acordo com a literatura científica, confirma-se que a temática do desenvolvimento sustentável é interdisciplinar e que a produção de conhecimento dos grupos de pesquisa é fruto de saberesarticulados entre várias áreas do conhecimento.The technological innovation brought for the debate the question of the sustainable technological development. The article presents an entirety of theoretical reflections on the science, technology and sustainable development themes and to aim the contributions of the Information Science, while interdisciplinary science, with respect to the understanding of the sustainable development. With basis in this reference it was carried through the investigation of descriptive exploratory nature with quanti-qualitative boarding, having as main objective to identify the presence of the sustainable development thematic in research groups of the UFSCar registered in cadastre in the National Directory of Research Groups of the CNPq. The results had shown that the sustainable development thematic is present in eleven research groups of the UFSCar distributed in different knowledge areas. Comparing the data gotten with the research groups of the country that had participated of 2004 Census of the National Directory of Research Groups of the CNPq it was verified that it has similarity between both the data. In accordance with scientific literature, confirms that the sustainable development thematic is interdisciplinar and that the knowledge production of the research groups is result to know articulated in some of the knowledge areas

A comunicação midiática da tecnociência: uma leitura a partir do enfoque cts

This paper has two basic aims. The first one is to propose a discussion about the journalistic potential of information regarding patents, trying to identify using some experiences, the characteristics of this techno-scientific product that, somehow, draws the attention of the media. The second one is to understand the relationship between media and patents from the perspective of the studies on Science, Technology and Society (STS). The following assumption is made: the media treatment of patents is still strongly marked by economic bias and follows the logic of the supply-linear model, under which, among other important ideas, basic research is followed by applied research and, then, by technological developments that allow the launch of a new product bringing benefits for society. The paper presents results from case studies of science communication involving patents of the Federal University of Silo Carlos (UFSCar), Brazil, indicating that they are an important source of news for the media, and emphasizing the importance of the media in the national and international discussions about the protection of intellectual work
