Phosphocaveolin-1 enforces tumor growth and chemoresistance in rhabdomyosarcoma

Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) can ambiguously behave as either tumor suppressor or oncogene depending on its phosphorylation state and the type of cancer. In this study we show that Cav-1 was phosphorylated on tyrosine 14 (pCav-1) by Src-kinase family members in various human cell lines and primary mouse cultures of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), the most frequent soft-tissue sarcoma affecting childhood. Cav-1 overexpression in the human embryonal RD or alveolar RH30 cells yielded increased pCav-1 levels and reinforced the phosphorylation state of either ERK or AKT kinase, respectively, in turn enhancing in vitro cell proliferation, migration, invasiveness and chemoresistance. In contrast, reducing the pCav-1 levels by administration of a Src-kinase inhibitor or through targeted Cav-1 silencing counteracted the malignant in vitro phenotype of RMS cells. Consistent with these results, xenotransplantation of Cav-1 overexpressing RD cells into nude mice resulted in substantial tumor growth in comparison to control cells. Antinutritional factors, nutritional improvement, and future food use of common beans : a perspective

Common bean seeds are an excellent source of protein as well as of carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and bioactive compounds reducing, when in the diet, the risks of diseases. The presence of bioactive compounds with antinutritional properties (e.g., phytic acid, lectins, raffinosaccharides, protease inhibitors) limits, however, the bean’s nutritional value and its wider use in food preparations. In the last decades, concerted efforts have been, therefore, made to develop new common bean genotypes with reduced antinutritional compounds by exploiting the natural genetic variability of common bean and also applying induced mutagenesis. However, possible negative, or positive, pleiotropic effects due to these modifications, in terms of plant performance in response to stresses or in the resulting technological properties of the developed mutant genotypes, have yet not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of the perspective paper is to first highlight the current advances, which have been already made in mutant bean characterization. The economics of intangible cultural heritage : craftsmanship and arts and crafts in France

L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier les savoir-faire artistiques et artisanaux qui fondent les métiers d'art et d'approfondir al question de leur sauvegarde, qui s'intègre dans le débat plus ample concernant la viabilité du patrimoine culturel immatériel (PCI). Pour ce faire, nous étudions d'abord les spécificités des savoir-faire, en tant qu'éléments du PCI, ainsi que leurs rôles dans nos sociétés contemporaines et les causes de leur disparition. Ensuite, nous analysons et mettons en perspective les politiques publiques orientées vers leur sauvegarde. Cette recherche, bien que volontairement resserrée sur le cas spécifique des savoir-faire et des métiers d'art en France, permet de formuler des conclusions plus générales concernant la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel immatériel.This thesis provides an economic analysis of a new category of heritage: Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). The research initiates with an in-depth analysis of the structure of tangible heritage, followed by a literature survey and field work allowing a theoretical and practical examination of the evolution of the concept of cultural heritage and the importance of extending it to include intangible expressions and practices. Main results: -analysis of the major differences between tangible and intangible heritage, emphasizing that ICH is deeply rooted in territories and communities, it is held by specific members, and it is not static, but continually transforms and innovates. -highlights the strategic role of ICH in contemporary global and knowledge economics as a critical factor for economic, cultural, social and sustainable development. -understanding of teh main causes of deterioration, disappearance and destruction of ICH elements, principally related to formal and informal processes of transmission of knowledge and skills, and including effects of intellectual property measures, the lack of material resources, and the degradation of the natural and social environments. -analysis of the main existing policies for ICH. -awareness of the idea that ICH can be considered, from an economic point of view, a cultural commons, thus increasing the realization that inadequate uses might destroy it and that alternative ways of governance can exist
