    Balancing Efficiency, Equity, and Voice in Workplace Resolution Procedures

    Systems for resolving workplace disputes are very important to workers and firms, and have been the subject of much debate. In the United States, traditional unionized grievance procedures, emerging nonunion dispute resolution systems, and the court-based system for resolving employment law disputes have all been criticized. Much of the existing debate on workplace dispute resolution, however, has been atheoretical, with a focus on techniques of dispute resolution rather than the goals of the system. What is missing from the debate are fundamental standards for comparing and evaluating dispute resolutions systems. In this paper, we develop efficiency, equity, and voice as these standards. Unionized, nonunion, and employment law procedures are then evaluated against these three standards.

    The normal criterion used to determine if a mining venture should be started or continued is its financial profitability. Energy efficiency is another criterion for dealing with public energy decisions. The energy efficiency ratios (output/input) of a large bulldozer, a scraper ripper, a small dragline, and a large dragline system were calculated for the Iowa Coal Project Demonstration Mine #1 (ICPDM #1) located between Oskaloosa and Bussey, Iowa. Even though the large dragline had the lowest cost and highest energy efficiency, it would not be used on this site without having other nearby sites available to allow long-term use

    Transient x-ray diffraction used to diagnose shock compressed Si crystals on the Nova laser

    Transient x-ray diffraction is used to record time-resolved information about the shock compression of materials. This technique has been applied on Nova shock experiments driven using a hohlraum x-ray drive. Data were recorded from the shock release at the free surface of a Si crystal, as well as from Si at an embedded ablator/Si interface. Modeling has been done to simulate the diffraction data incorporating the strained crystal rocking curves and Bragg diffraction efficiencies. Examples of the data and post-processed simulations are presented
