An evaluation of the suitability of ERTS data for the purposes of petroleum exploration
This experiment was designed to determine the types and amounts of information valuable to petroleum exploration extractable from ERTS data and the cost of obtaining the information using traditional or conventional means. It was desired that an evaluation of this new petroleum exploration tool be made in a geologically well known area in order to assess its usefulness in an unknown area. The Anadarko Basin lies in western Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas. It was chosen as a test site because there is a great deal of published information available on the surface and subsurface geology of the area, and there are many known structures that act as traps for hydrocarbons. This basin is similar to several other large epicontinental sedimentary basins. It was found that ERTS imagery is an excellent tool for reconnaissance exploration of large sedimentary basins or new exploration provinces. For the first time, small and medium size oil companies can rapidly and effectively analyze exploration provinces as a whole
Massive Lepton Pairs as a Prompt Photon Surrogate
We discuss the transverse momentum distribution for the production of massive
lepton-pairs in hadron reactions at fixed target and collider energies within
the context of next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. For
values of the transverse momentum greater than the pair mass , , we show that the differential cross section is dominated by subprocesses
initiated by incident gluons. Massive lepton-pair differential cross sections
are an advantageous source of constraints on the gluon density, free from the
experimental and theoretical complications of photon isolation that beset
studies of prompt photon production. We compare calculations with data and
provide predictions for the differential cross section as a function of
in proton-antiproton reactions at center-of-mass energies of 1.8 TeV, and in

Transverse Momentum Distributions for Heavy Quark Pairs
We study the transverse momentum distribution for a of heavy quarks
produced in hadron-hadron interactions. Predictions for the large transverse
momentum region are based on exact order QCD perturbation theory.
For the small transverse momentum region, we use techniques for all orders
resummation of leading logarithmic contributions associated with initial state
soft gluon radiation. The combination provides the transverse momentum
distribution of heavy quark pairs for all transverse momenta. Explicit results
are presented for pair production at the Fermilab Tevatron collider

kt Effects in Direct-Photon Production
We discuss the phenomenology of initial-state parton-kt broadening in
direct-photon production and related processes in hadron collisions. After a
brief summary of the theoretical basis for a Gaussian-smearing approach, we
present a systematic study of recent results on fixed-target and collider
direct-photon production, using complementary data on diphoton and pion
production to provide empirical guidance on the required amount of kt
broadening. This approach provides a consistent description of the observed
pattern of deviation of next-to-leading order QCD calculations relative to the
direct-photon data, and accounts for the shape and normalization difference
between fixed-order perturbative calculations and the data. We also discuss the
uncertainties in this phenomenological approach, the implications of these
results on the extraction of the gluon distribution of the nucleon, and the

Single spin asymmetries in DIS
We consider possible mechanisms for single spin asymmetries in inclusive Deep
Inelastic Scattering (DIS) processes with unpolarized leptons and transversely
polarized nucleons. Tests for the effects of non-zero \bfk_\perp, for the
properties of spin dependent quark fragmentations and for quark helicity

Examination of direct-photon and pion production in proton-nucleon collisions
We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and pion production in hadronic
interactions, focusing on a comparison of the ratio of gamma/pi0 yields with
expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We also
examine the impact of a phenomenological model involving k_T smearing (which
approximates effects of additional soft-gluon emission) on absolute predictions

Role of the nonperturbative input in QCD resummed Drell-Yan -distributions
We analyze the role of the nonperturbative input in the Collins, Soper, and
Sterman (CSS)'s -space QCD resummation formalism for Drell-Yan transverse
momentum () distributions, and investigate the predictive power of the CSS
formalism. We find that the predictive power of the CSS formalism has a strong
dependence on the collision energy in addition to its well-known
dependence, and the dependence improves the predictive power
at collider energies. We show that a reliable extrapolation from perturbatively
resummed -space distributions to the nonperturbative large region is
necessary to ensure the correct distributions. By adding power
corrections to the renormalization group equations in the CSS formalism, we
derive a new extrapolation formalism. We demonstrate that at collider energies,
the CSS resummation formalism plus our extrapolation has an excellent
predictive power for and production at all transverse momenta . We also show that the -space resummed distributions provide a good

QCD Factorized Drell-Yan Cross Section at Large Transverse Momentum
We derive a new factorization formula in perturbative quantum chromodynamics
for the Drell-Yan massive lepton-pair cross section as a function of the
transverse momentum of the pair. When is much larger than the
pair's invariant mass , this factorization formula systematically resums the
logarithmic contributions of the type to all
orders in the strong coupling . When , our formula yields
the same Drell-Yan cross section as conventional fixed order QCD perturbation
theory. We show that resummation is important when the collision energy
is large enough and , and we argue that perturbative
expansions are more stable and reliable in terms of the modified factorization

General behaviour of Bianchi VI_0 solutions with an exponential-potential scalar field
The solutions to the Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations without a cosmological
constant are investigated for an exponential potential in a Bianchi VI_0
metric. There exists a two-parameter family of solutions which have a power-law
inflationary behaviour when the exponent of the potential, k, satisfies k^2<2.
In addition, there exists a two-parameter family of singular solutions for all
k^2 values. A simple anisotropic exact solution is found to be stable when
