    Canada's most distinguished anthropologist, Dr. Diamond Jenness, formerly Chief of the Division of Anthropology, National Museums of Canada, and Honorary Associate of the Arctic Institute of North America, died peacefully at his home in the Gatineau Hills near Ottawa on 29 November, 1969. He was one of that rapidly-vanishing, virtually extinct kind - the all round anthropologist, who, working seriously, turned out first-class publications in all four major branches of the discipline: ethnology, linguistics, archaeology, and physical anthropology. One must also add a fifth: applied anthropology, a fitting designation for the series of monographs on Eskimo administration in Alaska, Canada, and Greenland which he wrote after his retirement and which were published by the Arctic Institute of North America. ... [In response to an invitation to join Stefansson Arctic Expedition and study Eskimos for three years, Jenness found himself a member of the Southern Party with an assignment to study the Copper Eskimos around Coronation Gulf. These plans were interrupted due to the presence of sea ice.] On 30 September, Stefansson, with his secretary Burt McConnell, Jenness, two Eskimos, and the expedition's photographer G.H. Wilkins (later Sir Hubert Wilkins), left the Karluk near the mouth of the Colville River to hunt caribou and lay in a supply of fresh meat when it had become apparent that the ship, immobilized in the ice, could proceed no further. With two sleds, twelve dogs and food for twelve days the party set out for the mainland, but they never saw the Karluk again, for a week or so later the unfortunate vessel began her final drift westward. This was the inauspicious beginning of Jenness' arctic career. Few young anthropologists have faced such difficulties in beginning field-work in a new and unfamiliar area; yet none, surely, has emerged from the test with a more brilliant record of work accomplished. ... Jenness' first winter's field-work on the Arctic coast of Alaska led to [an] impressive list of publications ... conducted under conditions that many an ethnographer would have found intolerable. ... Scarcely a hint of these personal experiences of his first winter in the Arctic will be found in Jenness' anthropological writings. They were reserved for his retrospective volume Dawn in Arctic Alaska (1957) which he wrote while on a Gugenheim scholarship in 1954, some years after his retirement. ... Jenness' first year in the Arctic ended in July 1914 when the Expedition's schooners left Camden Bay and sailed eastward to Dolphin and Union Strait where he was to meet with another though very different, Eskimo people named by Stefansson the Copper Eskimos, most of whom, before Stefansson worked among them in 1910-1911, had never seen a white man. ... To obtain a faithful picture of the life of the Copper Eskimos Jenness chose an approach that in those days was not often employed by ethnologists. He entered into their life directly, as one of them. He attached himself to an Eskimo family and became the adopted son of Ikpukhuak, one of the foremost hunters and respected leaders of the Puivlik tribe of southwest Victoria Island, and his wife Higilak (Ice House), who was not only proficient in the ordinary and burdensome duties of an Eskimo wife but was also a shaman in her own right, a talent that saved Jenness from a local murder charge. Jenness lived with these people in their snow houses in winter and skin tents in summer, observing and recording the vastly different modes of life according to season. ... Jenness' researches extended far beyond Coronation Gulf and the arctic coast westward. ... Jenness always disclaimed being an archaeologist, yet he made two discoveries that are fundamental to an understanding of Eskimo prehistory - discovery of the Dorset culture in the eastern Arctic, and of the Old Bering Sea, earliest stage of the maritime pattern of Eskimo culture that later spread from northern Alaska to Canada and Greenland to form the principal basis for modern Eskimo culture. ... And so much more. In 1926, Jenness succeeded Edward Sapir as Chief Anthropologist of the National Museum of Canada. ... He developed the Antiquities Legislation that has been so important for the protection of archaeological resources in the Northwest Territories. ... Between 1962 and 1968 the Arctic Institute of North America published his admirable five volumes on Eskimo administration in Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. These monographs reflect his durable and compassionate concern for Canadian Indians and Eskimos and in them one can find much of the advice that he, for so many decades, provided the Canadian Government. ... [Jenness' accomplishments extend beyond the realm of anthropology and his reputation was both national and international. For his services in the field of anthropology, particularly in connection with the Indian and Eskimo population of Canada, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.

    Family Business CEO Succession: Examining Personal Retirement Expectations

    Retirement well-being expectations of incumbent family owned business CEOs is a critical precursor to successful succession events. The significant antecedents to retirement well-being expectation are family relationships, wealth management and transfer, leadership succession and development, and continuity and viability of the firm. Using data from a survey of 256 family firm CEOs we demonstrate those relationships and show a very strong connection between retirement well-being expectation and firm performance. Study results further our premise that antecedents to retirement well-being expectation are indirectly tied to the overall health and performance of the family firm

    Impact of consensus guidelines for breast-conserving surgery in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ

    BACKGROUND: Consensus guidelines published in 2016 recommended a 2 mm free margin as the standard for negative margins in patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery (BCS) for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The goal of the guideline recommendation was standardization of re-excision practices. AIMS: To evaluate the impact of this consensus guideline on our institutional practices. METHODS: We identified all patients at our institution with pure DCIS who were initially treated with BCS from September 2014 to August 2018 using a prospectively-maintained institutional database. A retrospective chart review was performed to determine margin status and re-excision rates during the 2 years before and the 2 years after the guideline was published in order to determine the effect on our re-excision rates. Close margins were defined as \u3c2 mm. RESULTS: In the 2 years before the consensus guideline was published, 184 patients with DCIS underwent BCS. Twenty-six patients had positive margins and 24 underwent re-excision, including three who had completion mastectomy. Of the remaining 159 patients, 76 had ≥2 mm (negative) margins. The remaining 82 patients had close margins and 48 of these patients (58.5%) underwent re-excision, including one who had a completion mastectomy. Excluding the patients with positive margins, our re-excision rate was 30.4% prior to the guideline. In the 2 years after the consensus guideline was published, 192 patients with DCIS underwent initial BCS. Twenty-four patients had positive margins and 22 underwent re-excision, including three who had completion mastectomy. Of the remaining 168 patients, 95 patients had ≥2 mm (negative) margins. The remaining 73 patients had close margins and 45 of those patients (61.6%) underwent re-excision, including six who had completion mastectomy. Excluding the patients with positive margins, our re-excision rate was 26.8% after the guideline. CONCLUSIONS: Our institution\u27s re-excision rate did not change significantly during the 2 years before and after the publication of the consensus guideline on adequate margins for patients undergoing BCT for DCIS. Our overall re-excision rate decreased slightly. However, of the patients who had close margins, a larger proportion underwent re-excision after the guideline was published. The guideline publication appears to have affected our institutional practices slightly, but not dramatically as many of our surgeons\u27 practices were comparable to the guideline recommendations prior to 2016. We continue to use clinical judgment based on patient and tumor characteristics in deciding which patients will benefit from margin re-excision

    A 5 day diglyme reflux of Rh(acac)3 and K(C5HPh4), followed by treatment with aqueous HPF6, produces orange-yellow [(C5HPh4)2Rh]PF66 in 40 - 50% yield. Reduction of [(C5HPh4)2Rh]PF6 with sodium amalgam in THF yields olive green (C5HPh4)2Rh in 70% yield. (C5HPh4)2Rh crystallizes in the triclinic [Error : unloaded OLE object or mail attachment]space group with unit-cell parameters of a = 8.622 (3) Å, b = 10.778 (4) Å, c = 12.894 (5) Å, a = 65.58 (3)°, b = 72.66 (3)°, g = 83.52 (3)°, and Z = 1. The least squares data refined to RF = 7.63% and RwF = 10.12% for the 2479 independent observed reflections with Fo \u3e 5s(Fo ). The metal-centroid distance is 1.904 Å and all other bond lengths and angles are similar to known octaphenylmetallocenes. ESR spectra of (C5HPh4)2Rh in low-temperature glasses display a rhombic g-tensor with resolution of Rh hyperfine splitting on one-g-component. Analysis of the spectral parameters is consistent with a d7 configuration derived from a nearly degenerate dxz, dyz ground state. Voltammetry and coulometry establish the electron-transfer series (C5HPh4)2Rh1+/0/1- with E° values of -1.44 V and -2.13 V vs ferrocene. The heterogeneous charge transfer rate of the second reduction is about three orders of magnitude lower than that of the first

    Ex vivo Platelet Deposition on Fibronectin-Preadsorbed Surfaces

    Temporal platelet deposition profiles of canine plasma fibronectin (CPFN) adsorbed to different polymers ex vivo and the in vitro characteristics of CPFN adsorption were studied in an attempt to correlate the two. The maximum platelet deposition (pltmax) obtained at a protein preadsorption time of 30 min was greater than that obtained using an adsorption time of 120 min for all surfaces studied. At 30 min of preadsorption, pltmax was 520, 560 and 1230 platelets/1000 μm2 on Biomer, polyethylene (PE) and oxidized PE (OXPE), respectively. In contrast, the platelet deposition at 120 min. of fibronectin preadsorption was about 60-90 platelets/1000 μm2 on all polymers studied. The surface concentrations of adsorbed CPFN measured using 125I-CPFN, were in the order PE\u3e OXPE \u3e Biomer. The adsorbed protein concentration increased with increasing adsorption time. The surface distribution of adsorbed CPFN was visualized with antibody-labelled colloidal gold and scanning electron microscopy. The extent of staining was lowest on PE, greater on Biomer, and highest on OXPE, roughly similar to the order of platelet deposition. Platelet deposition ex vivo appears to correlate with the irnmunogold-stainable-adsorbed protein rather than with the total amount of adsorbed protein

    Gal4 turnover and transcription activation

    Growing evidence supports the notion that proteasome-mediated destruction of transcriptional activators can be intimately coupled to their function. Recently, Nalley et al. challenged this view by reporting that the prototypical yeast activator Gal4 does not dynamically associate with chromatin, but rather 'locks in' to stable promoter complexes that are resistant to competition. Here we present evidence that the assay used to reach this conclusion is unsuitable, and that promoter-bound, active Gal4 is indeed susceptible to competition in vivo. Our data challenge the key evidence that Nalley et al. used to reach their conclusion, and indicate that Gal4 functions in vivo within the context of dynamic promoter complexes
