    Visual Target Selection and Motor Planning Define Attentional Enhancement at Perceptual Processing Stages

    Extracting information from the visual field can be achieved by covertly orienting attention to different regions, or by making saccades to bring areas of interest onto the fovea. While much research has shown a link between covert attention and saccade preparation, the nature of that link remains a matter of dispute. Covert presaccadic orienting could result from target selection or from planning a motor act toward an object. We examined the contribution of visual target selection and motor preparation to attentional orienting in humans by dissociating these two habitually aligned processes with saccadic adaptation. Adaptation introduces a discrepancy between the visual target evoking a saccade and the motor metrics of that saccade, which, unbeknownst to the participant, brings the eyes to a different spatial location. We examined attentional orienting by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) to task-irrelevant visual probes flashed during saccade preparation at four equidistant locations including the visual target location and the upcoming motor endpoint. ERPs as early as 130–170 ms post-probe were modulated by attention at both the visual target and motor endpoint locations. These results indicate that both target selection and motor preparation determine the focus of spatial attention, resulting in enhanced processing of stimuli at early visual-perceptual stages

    Higher Education Faculty Members’ Experience Implementing Instructional Technology Tools and Changing Instructional Practices During the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Transcendental Phenomenological Study

    The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of higher education faculty with implementing instructional technology tools and changing instructional practices at a public university in the western United States during the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic emergency remote teaching. Guiding this study was Bandura’s (1977) theory of self-efficacy pertaining to an individual\u27s belief and confidence in their ability to perform and have control over the necessary motivation, behaviors, and social environment to produce specific outcomes. Additionally, the Technology Pedagogy Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and andragogical principles provided the theoretical underpinnings of this study. Data were collected from 13 participants through individual interviews, collection of documents and artifacts, and focus groups and analyzed using Moustakas’ (1994) transcendental phenomenological approach. Four themes emerged: (a) teaching experience, (b) student performance, (c) workload, health, and personal responsibilities, and (d) silver linings. Participants reported prior experience teaching online, or mastery experiences, as a major contributing factor in their increased self-efficacy with the transition to emergency remote teaching. Institutional support for online teaching, online teaching and learning training for all faculty and students, and increasing online course offerings were revealed as recommendations to facilitate institutional emergency readiness. The lived experiences described by participants revealed that experience, proper training, a supportive culture with appropriate systems and policies in place were crucial with implementing online instructional technology tools and changing instructional practices during emergency remote teaching. While the COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for participants in a variety of ways such as with student performance, increased workload, teaching style preference issues, health, and personal responsibilities, there were silver linings that emerged such as information gained addressing institutional emergency readiness factors, new skillsets attained, social justice solutions realized such as ways to serve students with disabilities more effectively, and solutions to other diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. Future research could also expand to students to gain a deeper understanding of how emergency remote learning affected them during the pandemic

In some cases, these devices replaced the physical exam. But in areas of the world where technology is unavailable, and even in places where it exists, many physicians and healthcare professionals cannot or will not to cede their tasks to tools.     Clostridium botulinum group III: a group with dual identity shaped by plasmids, phages and mobile elements

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Clostridium botulinum </it>strains can be divided into four physiological groups that are sufficiently diverged to be considered as separate species. Here we present the first complete genome of a <it>C. botulinum </it>strain from physiological group III, causing animal botulism. We also compare the sequence to three new draft genomes from the same physiological group.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 2.77 Mb chromosome was highly conserved between the isolates and also closely related to that of <it>C. novyi</it>. However, the sequence was very different from the human <it>C. botulinum </it>group genomes. Replication-directed translocations were rare and conservation of synteny was high. The largest difference between <it>C. botulinum </it>group III isolates occurred within their surprisingly large plasmidomes and in the pattern of mobile elements insertions. Five plasmids, constituting 13.5% of the total genetic material, were present in the completed genome. Interestingly, the set of plasmids differed compared to other isolates. The largest plasmid, the botulinum-neurotoxin carrying prophage, was conserved at a level similar to that of the chromosome while the medium-sized plasmids seemed to be undergoing faster genetic drift. These plasmids also contained more mobile elements than other replicons. Several toxins and resistance genes were identified, many of which were located on the plasmids.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The completion of the genome of <it>C. botulinum </it>group III has revealed it to be a genome with dual identity. It belongs to the pathogenic species <it>C. botulinum</it>, but as a genotypic species it should also include <it>C. novyi </it>and <it>C. haemolyticum</it>. The genotypic species share a conserved chromosomal core that can be transformed into various pathogenic variants by modulation of the highly plastic plasmidome.</p

    Long-Term Benefits from Early Antiretroviral Therapy Initiation in HIV Infection

    BACKGROUND: For people with HIV and CD4+ counts >500 cells/mm3, early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces serious AIDS and serious non-AIDS (SNA) risk compared with deferral of treatment until CD4+ counts are 500 cells/mm3, excess risk of AIDS and SNA associated with delaying treatment initiation was diminished after ART initiation, but persistent excess risk remained.     Trans-ancestry meta-analyses identify rare and common variants associated with blood pressure and hypertension

    High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and premature death. However, there is limited knowledge on specific causal genes and pathways. To better understand the genetics of blood pressure, we genotyped 242,296 rare, low-frequency and common genetic variants in up to ~192,000 individuals, and used ~155,063 samples for independent replication. We identified 31 novel blood pressure or hypertension associated genetic regions in the general population, including three rare missense variants in RBM47, COL21A1 and RRAS with larger effects (>1.5mmHg/allele) than common variants. Multiple rare, nonsense and missense variant associations were found in A2ML1 and a low-frequency nonsense variant in ENPEP was identified. Our data extend the spectrum of allelic variation underlying blood pressure traits and hypertension, provide new insights into the pathophysiology of hypertension and indicate new targets for clinical intervention

    In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data
