    Trans-Atlantic linkage: a case study of Epthori, Greek Macedonia and its new England connections

    The aim of this study is to examine the relationship through time between the Greek village of Eptahori, Kastoria and the emigrants from there who settled in the United States. The linkage between Greek-Americans and their area of origin has not been thoroughly investigated by Social Scientists. The causes, mechanics and effects of the relationship relating to both the migrants and village are analyzed. While linkage consists of economic ties in the form of remittance sending and return migration there are also the added dimensions of social and cultural exchange which effect the character of those involved. A brief description of site selection and a succinct breakdown of the village history and physical description are given. Also, a review of the overall Greek-American migration and settlement pattern, using a specific example in the U.S.A. to illustrate the typical Greek-American community, is included. Most important, is the information which was extracted from migrants and villagers during periods of field- work in both the U.S. and Greece. The thesis then attempts to draw conclusions concerning the Eptahori case study and the overall concepts of Greek-American linkage, from a synthesis of data analysis and background information

Our database consists of 65,000 days of observations which provide insights into whether this bowhead stock may comprise more than one population

    The Two-loop Anomalous Dimension Matrix for Soft Gluon Exchange

    The resummation of soft gluon exchange for QCD hard scattering requires a matrix of anomalous dimensions. We compute this matrix directly for arbitrary 2 to n massless processes for the first time at two loops. Using color generator notation, we show that it is proportional to the one-loop matrix. This result reproduces all pole terms in dimensional regularization of the explicit calculations of massless 2 to 2 amplitudes in the literature, and it predicts all poles at next-to-next-to-leading order in any 2 to n process that has been computed at next-to-leading order. The proportionality of the one- and two-loop matrices makes possible the resummation in closed form of the next-to-next-to-leading logarithms and poles in dimensional regularization for the 2 to n processes.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, revte

    Organometallic vapor-phase homoepitaxy of gallium arsenide assisted by a downstream hydrogen afterglow plasma in the growth region

    Includes bibliographical references (page 3146).In situ generated arsenic hydrides are reacted downstream with trimethylgallium (TMGa), both in the presence of and in the absence of a downstream hydrogen afterglow plasma. The homoepitaxial activation energy dramatically changes from 62 kcal/mol for the pure thermal to 21 kcal/mol for the plasma-assisted growth. The carbon incorporation mechanism for the plasma-assisted growth at temperatures less than 400 °C has a distinct activation energy for carbon incorporation of 23 kcal/mol, independent of V-III ratios. At temperatures above 400 °C, the level of carbon incorporated in the films reaches a level that appears to be dependent on the gas-phase precursor V-III ratio. The activation energy of the low-temperature region is consistent with the surface decomposition of arsenic hydrides

    Influence of electron collisions inside the cathode sheath upon the electron energy spectrum in the negative glow region of a gas discharge

    Includes bibliographical references.Computer models have been developed to solve the Boltzmann equation for the electron energy spectrum in both the cathode sheath and the negative glow region of a glow discharge. Electron collisions occurring during acceleration inside the cathode sheath partially determine the structure of the electron energy distribution measured in the negative glow. The relative role of elastic, excitation, and ionization collisions are examined using the computer model. Good qualitative agreement was obtained between calculated electron energy distributions and previous experimental measurements both at the sheath-plasma interface as well as in the negative glow region of the discharge.This work was supported by the National Science Foundation.     An operator expansion for the elastic limit

    A leading twist expansion in terms of bi-local operators is proposed for the structure functions of deeply inelastic scattering near the elastic limit x1x \to 1, which is also applicable to a range of other processes. Operators of increasing dimensions contribute to logarithmically enhanced terms which are supressed by corresponding powers of 1x1-x.     Trial of Labour after Caesarean Section in a Secondary Health Facility in Abakaliki, Nigeria

    Background: The mode of delivery of a parturient is influenced by previous caesarean section (CS) scar. Objective: The objective of the study is to evaluate the pregnancy outcomes of a parturient with one previous caesarean delivery that was managed in Mile Four hospital, Abakaliki, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A 5‑year retrospective study of women with one previous CS who delivered in Mile Four hospital between January 2011 and December 2015 was done. IBM SPSS version 20 was used for data analysis, and data were represented using frequency tables, charts, and Chi‑square. The level of significance was set at an alpha level of 0.05. Results: Three hundred and twenty‑two (322) women with one previous CS were selected for a trial of labor after A C/S (TOLAC). More than half of the women (53.1%) had successful TOLAC while 46.9% had a repeat CS. Of the 53.1% of women who had a successful TOLAC, One hundred and forty-one patients had spontaneous vertex delivery. Seventeen women (9.9%) on the TOLAC arm had a ruptured uterus, while seven patients (4.6%) failed the TOLAC group had uterine dehiscence. Haemorrhage was the most common maternal complication. Severe asphyxia and perinatal death were present in 5.9% and 5.3% of neonates on TOLAC arm, respectively. Conclusion: Trial of labour after a CS can result in an excellent outcome in a well‑selected patient. The success rate of 53.1% in our study is encouraging. However, adequate intrapartum monitoring is recommended to reduce maternal and fetal complications

    The Covariant Approach to LRS Perfect Fluid Spacetime Geometries

    The dynamics of perfect fluid spacetime geometries which exhibit {\em Local Rotational Symmetry} (LRS) are reformulated in the language of a 1+31+\,3 "threading" decomposition of the spacetime manifold, where covariant fluid and curvature variables are used. This approach presents a neat alternative to the orthonormal frame formalism. The dynamical equations reduce to a set of differential relations between purely scalar quantities. The consistency conditions are worked out in a transparent way. We discuss their various subcases in detail and focus in particular on models with higher symmetries within the class of expanding spatially inhomogeneous LRS models, via a consideration of functional dependencies between the dynamical variables.Comment: 25 pages, uuencoded/compressed postscript fil
