    Making Love Easier: Automating Communication for Better Relationship Building for Web Archives

    Starting in Fall of 2023, Ruth Bryan and Emily Collier began researching sustainability for the Web Archiving Program, which led them to building communication channels with the University of Kentucky Office of Public Relations and Marketing Web Content Development group. By tightening this channel, we hope to initiate the archival mindset right at the moment of content creation, as well as limit gaps in our web archives collection as the PR team is directly involved in monitoring sites that go live and expire. Part of this tightening of communication has been finding ways to automate alerts when changes are made to the uky.edu domain sites. Zapier, an automation tool capable of linking thousands of apps, was investigated as a means of auto-generating Trello cards when new or altered sites are added to a shared Google Sheet in our communal Google Drive for Web Archiving. This presentation discusses the first trial of Zapier and the potential benefits of adding it to workflows

    Representing moisture fluxes and phase changes in glacier debris cover using a reservoir approach

    Due to the complexity of treating moisture in supraglacial debris, surface energy balance models to date have neglected moisture infiltration and phase changes in the debris layer. The latent heat flux (QL) is also often excluded due to the uncertainty in determining the surface vapour pressure. To quantify the importance of moisture on the surface energy and climatic mass balance (CMB) of debris-covered glaciers, we developed a simple reservoir parameterization for the debris ice and water content, as well as an estimation of the latent heat flux. The parameterization was incorporated into a CMB model adapted for debris-covered glaciers. We present the results of two point simulations, using both our new “moist” and the conventional “dry” approaches, on the Miage Glacier, Italy, during summer 2008 and fall 2011. The former year coincides with available in situ glaciological and meteorological measurements, including the first eddy-covariance measurements of the turbulent fluxes over supraglacial debris, while the latter contains two refreeze events that permit evaluation of the influence of phase changes. The simulations demonstrate a clear influence of moisture on the glacier energy and mass-balance dynamics. When water and ice are considered, heat transmission to the underlying glacier ice is lower, as the effective thermal diffusivity of the saturated debris layers is reduced by increases in both the density and the specific heat capacity of the layers. In combination with surface heat extraction by QL, subdebris ice melt is reduced by 3.1% in 2008 and by 7.0% in 2011 when moisture effects are included. However, the influence of the parameterization on the total accumulated mass balance varies seasonally. In summer 2008, mass loss due to surface vapour fluxes more than compensates for the reduction in ice melt, such that the total ablation increases by 4.0 %. Conversely, in fall 2011, the modulation of basal debris temperature by debris ice results in a decrease in total ablation of 2.1 %. Although the parameterization is a simplified representation of the moist physics of glacier debris, it is a novel attempt at including moisture in a numerical model of debris-covered glaciers and one that opens up additional avenues for future research

    Building a Roadmap for Web Archiving: Organizational Sustainability in an American Research University Library

    The presenters, archivists in an academic university Library, launched a web archiving program for a public university in the United States in 2018 with a three-year Archive-it contract. In the first six years of the web archiving program, we have laid the groundwork for an ongoing web archiving program through robust documentation built in anticipation of potential loss of resources, especially personnel. In this presentation, we report on a sustainability review of the program using a practical framework and a conceptual framework. The practical framework is the University of Pittsburg\u27s Socio-Technical Sustainability Roadmap (https://sites.haa.pitt.edu/sustainabilityroadmap/). The conceptual framework is Kristin R. Eschenfelder et al.\u27s 2019 Nine Dimensional Framework for Digital Cultural Heritage Organizational Sustainability ( https://doi.org/10.1108/OIR-11-2017-0318). We describe each framework, the resulting program evaluation, and the sustainability issues and solutions we uncovered. We also outline gaps we encountered in the two frameworks by putting them into conversation with each other

    Cultural heritage resources are increasingly being produced and distributed digitally yet the world of physical materials has not declined. Analog-based archival theory and practice is still relevant, but born-digital formats make acquisition, appraisal, resource allocation, collection management, and external relationships much more challenging. During this session, four archivists and librarians from the University of Kentucky Libraries (UKL) will share their current challenges and successes working with different aspects of born-digital stewardship. They will share practical tips, tools, policies, and mental frameworks to help attendees identify gaps, pitfalls, and opportunities in digital stewardship at their own institutions. Sarah Dorpinghaus will provide an overview of UKL’s shifting digital preservation landscape, highlighting challenges and opportunities in supporting digital preservation systems and activities during major changes in campus-wide infrastructure services. She will discuss how this impacts digital curation and preservation decisions. Megan Mummey will then talk about instituting earlier and more comprehensive appraisal practices for born-digital manuscript collections with an eye towards environmental impact. Ruth Bryan will follow by outlining challenges with acquiring currently-created born-digital university documents and offer some initial solutions. Emily Collier will then share her experiences with the Wildcat Histories project (funded by Project STAND) and the obstacles of dealing with web-based content, particularly the volatile nature of social media sites. Their experiences will examine how one academic research library is grappling with aligning current resources with future collection needs. They hope future UKL librarians and archivists will cheer, “Good job, past colleagues!

    Preservation Perseverance: Archiving Social Media Content, A University of Kentucky/Latino Student Union Collaboration

    The voices of activist student leaders and organizations are crucial to preserve, whether it be in a formal archives or as part of an archiving process undertaken by individuals and groups to preserve their legacies. Increasingly, these voices are found in social media and other online and web platforms that are difficult to preserve. Wildcat Histories is a year-long, grant-funded collaboration between the University of Kentucky Libraries and the University of Kentucky Latino Student Union (LSU) to research the best technologies for (as of July 2023) and then carry out the preservation of activist student organization social media content. The authors present an overview and current status of and next steps for the project, including examples of preserved LSU social media platforms. They then describe the current technical aspects and communication and outreach activities of the project. They end with reflection questions for others considering taking on similar projects

    Constraints of FL Motif on the Targeting and Function of Sodium-Bicarbonate Cotransporter 1

    A C-terminal dihydrophobic FL motif plays a vital role in the basolateral targeting of sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 1. To further characterize the role of dihydrophobic FL motif, 1). the FL motif in wild type (PFLS) was reversed to LF (PLFS), 2). the FL motif (PFLS) was shifted upstream (FLPS), and 3). the FL motif (PFLS) was shifted downstream (PSFL). The wild type (PFLS) and its mutant (PLFS) were exclusively expressed on the basolateral membrane by con-focal microscopy, however, the mutant (FLPS) and (PSFL) were predominantly mistargeted to the apical membrane and the cytoplasm, respectively. Functional studies showed that the mutant (PSFL) displayed a remarkably reduced current (p value<0.05 vs wild type). The mutant (PSFL) displayed a more reduced membrane surface expression than the wild type and was co-localized with ER marker. The protein sequence spanning FL motif in kNBC1 C-terminal cytoplasmic tail shows a helical structure, mutants (PLFS) and (PSFL) reduce a-helical contents by circular dichroism study. Reversed FL isn't a constraint for basolateral targeting, but shifting it upstream and downstream are ones

    Prominent Midlatitude Circulation Signature in High Asia's Surface Climate During Monsoon

    ©2017. American Geophysical UnionHigh Asia has experienced strong environmental changes in recent decades, as evident in records of glaciers, lakes, tree rings, and vegetation. The multiscale understanding of the climatic drivers, however, is still incomplete. In particular, few systematic assessments have evaluated to what degree, if at all, the midlatitude westerly circulation modifies local surface climates in the reach of the Indian Summer Monsoon. This paper shows that a southward shift of the upper‐tropospheric westerlies contributes significantly to climate variability in the core monsoon season (July–September) by two prominent dipole patterns at the surface: cooling in the west of High Asia contrasts with warming in the east, while moist anomalies in the east and northwest occur with drying along the southwestern margins. Circulation anomalies help to understand the dipoles and coincide with shifts in both the westerly wave train and the South Asian High, which imprint on air mass advection and local energy budgets. The relation of the variabilities to a well‐established index of midlatitude climate dynamics allows future research on climate proxies to include a fresh hypothesis for the interpretation of environmental changes
