The Definition and Measurement of the Topological Entropy per Unit Volume in Parabolic PDE's
We define the topological entropy per unit volume in parabolic PDE's such as
the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and show that it exists, and is bounded
by the upper Hausdorff dimension times the maximal expansion rate. We then give
a constructive implementation of a bound on the inertial range of such
equations. Using this bound, we are able to propose a finite sampling algorithm
which allows (in principle) to measure this entropy from experimental data.Comment: 26 pages, 1 small figur
Four-states phase diagram of proteins
A four states phase diagram for protein folding as a function of temperature
and solvent quality is derived from an improved 2-d lattice model taking into
account the temperature dependence of the hydrophobic effect. The phase diagram
exhibits native, globule and two coil-type regions. In agreement with
experiment, the model reproduces the phase transitions indicative of both warm
and cold denaturations. Finally, it predicts transitions between the two coil

Thermodynamic Limit Of The Ginzburg-Landau Equations
We investigate the existence of a global semiflow for the complex
Ginzburg-Landau equation on the space of bounded functions in unbounded domain.
This semiflow is proven to exist in dimension 1 and 2 for any parameter values
of the standard cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation. In dimension 3 we need some
restrictions on the parameters but cover nevertheless some part of the

New Abundances for Old Stars - Atomic Diffusion at Work in NGC 6397
A homogeneous spectroscopic analysis of unevolved and evolved stars in the
metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397 with FLAMES-UVES reveals systematic trends
of stellar surface abundances that are likely caused by atomic diffusion. This
finding helps to understand, among other issues, why the lithium abundances of
old halo stars are significantly lower than the abundance found to be produced

A Numerical Study of the Hierarchical Ising Model: High Temperature Versus Epsilon Expansion
We study numerically the magnetic susceptibility of the hierarchical model
with Ising spins () above the critical temperature and for two
values of the epsilon parameter. The integrations are performed exactly, using
recursive methods which exploit the symmetries of the model. Lattices with up
to sites have been used. Surprisingly, the numerical data can be fitted
very well with a simple power law of the form for the {\it whole} temperature range. The numerical values for
agree within a few percent with the values calculated with a high-temperature
expansion but show significant discrepancies with the epsilon-expansion. We

Simultaneous multi-band detection of Low Surface Brightness galaxies with Markovian modelling
We present an algorithm for the detection of Low Surface Brightness (LSB)
galaxies in images, called MARSIAA (MARkovian Software for Image Analysis in
Astronomy), which is based on multi-scale Markovian modeling. MARSIAA can be
applied simultaneously to different bands. It segments an image into a
user-defined number of classes, according to their surface brightness and
surroundings - typically, one or two classes contain the LSB structures. We
have developed an algorithm, called DetectLSB, which allows the efficient
identification of LSB galaxies from among the candidate sources selected by
MARSIAA. To assess the robustness of our method, the method was applied to a
set of 18 B and I band images (covering 1.3 square degrees in total) of the
Virgo cluster. To further assess the completeness of the results of our method,
both MARSIAA, SExtractor, and DetectLSB were applied to search for (i) mock
Virgo LSB galaxies inserted into a set of deep Next Generation Virgo Survey
(NGVS) gri-band subimages and (ii) Virgo LSB galaxies identified by eye in a
full set of NGVS square degree gri images. MARSIAA/DetectLSB recovered ~20%
more mock LSB galaxies and ~40% more LSB galaxies identified by eye than
SExtractor/DetectLSB. With a 90% fraction of false positives from an entirely
unsupervised pipeline, a completeness of 90% is reached for sources with r_e >
3" at a mean surface brightness level of mu_g=27.7 mag/arcsec^2 and a central
surface brightness of mu^0 g=26.7 mag/arcsec^2. About 10% of the false
positives are artifacts, the rest being background galaxies. We have found our
method to be complementary to the application of matched filters and an
optimized use of SExtractor, and to have the following advantages: it is
scale-free, can be applied simultaneously to several bands, and is well adapted

Iron and s-elements abundance variations in NGC5286: comparison with anomalous globular clusters and Milky Way satellites
We present a high resolution spectroscopic analysis of 62 red giants in the
Milky Way globular cluster NGC5286. We have determined abundances of
representative light proton-capture, alpha, Fe-peak and neutron-capture element
groups, and combined them with photometry of multiple sequences observed along
the colour-magnitude diagram. Our principal results are: (i) a broad, bimodal
distribution in s-process element abundance ratios, with two main groups, the
s-poor and s-rich groups; (ii) substantial star-to-star Fe variations, with the
s-rich stars having higher Fe, e.g. _s-rich - _s-poor ~
0.2~dex; and (iii) the presence of O-Na-Al (anti-)correlations in both stellar
groups. We have defined a new photometric index, c_{BVI}=(B-V)-(V-I), to
maximise the separation in the colour-magnitude diagram between the two stellar
groups with different Fe and s-element content, and this index is not
significantly affected by variations in light elements (such as the O-Na
anticorrelation). The variations in the overall metallicity present in NGC5286
add this object to the class of "anomalous" GCs. Furthermore, the chemical
abundance pattern of NGC5286 resembles that observed in some of the anomalous
GCs, e.g. M22, NGC1851, M2, and the more extreme Omega Centauri, that also show
internal variations in s-elements, and in light elements within stars with
different Fe and s-elements content. In view of the common variations in
s-elements, we propose the term s-Fe-anomalous GCs to describe this sub-class
of objects. The similarities in chemical abundance ratios between these objects
strongly suggest similar formation and evolution histories, possibly associated
with an origin in tidally disrupted dwarf satellites.Comment: 28 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
