The two sided parsec scale structure of the Low Luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus in NGC 4278
We present new Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of the LINER
galaxy NGC 4278. The observations were taken with the Very Long Baseline Array
(VLBA) and a single antenna of the Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 GHz and 8.4 GHz
and have a linear resolution of <0.1 pc. Our radio data reveal a two sided
structure, with symmetric S-shaped jets emerging from a flat spectrum core. We
fit the jet brightness with gaussian components, which we identify from a
previous observation taken five years before. By comparing the positions of the
components in the two epochs, we measure motions between 0.45 +/- 0.14 and 3.76
+/- 0.65 mas, corresponding to apparent velocities < 0.2c, and to ages in the
range 8.3 - 65.8 years. Assuming that the radio morphology is intrinsically
symmetric and its appearance is governed by Doppler beaming effects, we find
that NGC4278 has mildly relativistic jets (beta ~ 0.75), closely aligned to the
line-of-sight (2 degrees < theta < 4 degrees). Alternatively, the source could
be oriented at a larger angle and asymmetries could be related to the jet
interaction with the surrounding medium. We also present new simultaneous VLA
observations between 1.4 and 43 GHz, and a 5 GHz light curve between 1972 and
2003. The radio spectrum can be fit by a relatively steep power-law (alpha =
0.54). We find significant variability at 5 GHz. All these arguments indicate
that the radiation from NGC 4278 is emitted via the synchrotron process by
relativistic particles accelerated by a supermassive black hole. Despite a much
lower power, this is the same process that takes place in ordinary radio loud
AGNs.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures, ApJ accepte
A simple test for the existence of two accretion modes in Active Galactic Nuclei
By analogy to the different accretion states observed in black-hole X-ray
binaries (BHXBs), it appears plausible that accretion disks in active galactic
nuclei (AGN) undergo a state transition between a radiatively efficient and
inefficient accretion flow. If the radiative efficiency changes at some
critical accretion rate, there will be a change in the distribution of black
hole masses and bolometric luminosities at the corresponding transition
luminosity. To test this prediction, I consider the joint distribution of AGN
black hole masses and bolometric luminosities for a sample taken from the
literature. The small number of objects with low Eddington-scaled accretion
rates mdot < 0.01 and black hole masses Mbh < 10^9 Msun constitutes tentative
evidence for the existence of such a transition in AGN. Selection effects, in
particular those associated with flux-limited samples, systematically exclude
objects in particular regions of the black hole mass-luminosity plane.
Therefore, they require particular attention in the analysis of distributions
of black hole mass, bolometric luminosity, and derived quantities like the
accretion rate. I suggest further observational tests of the BHXB-AGN
unification scheme which are based on the jet domination of the energy output
of BHXBs in the hard state, and on the possible equivalence of BHXB in the very
high (or "steep power-law") state showing ejections and efficiently accreting
quasars and radio galaxies with powerful radio jets.Comment: Accepted by ApJ; 14 pages, 4 figures, uses emulateap
Nontrivial dependence of dielectric stiffness and SHG on dc bias in relaxors and dipole glasses
Dielectric permittivity and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) studies in the
field-cooled mode show a linear dependence of dielectric stiffness (inverse
dielectric permittivity) on dc bias in PMN-PT crystals and SHG intensity in
KTaO:Li at small Li concentrations. We explain this unusual result in the
framework of a theory of transverse, hydrodynamic-type, instability of local
polarization.Comment: 5 figure
A Rich Cluster of Galaxies Near the Quasar B2 1335+28 at z=1.1: Color Distribution and Star-Formation Properties
We previously reported a significant clustering of red galaxies (R-K=3.5--6)
around the radio-loud quasar B2 1335+28 at z=1.086. In this paper, we establish
the existence of a rich cluster at the quasar redshift, and study the
properties of the cluster galaxies through further detailed analysis of the
photometric data. The color distribution of the galaxies in the cluster is
quite broad and the fraction of blue galaxies (\sim 70%) is much larger than in
intermediate-redshift clusters. Using evolutionary synthesis models, we show
that this color distribution can be explained by galaxies with various amounts
of star-formation activity mixed with the old stellar populations. Notably,
there are about a dozen galaxies which show very red optical-NIR colors but
also show significant UV excess with respect to passive-evolution models. They
can be interpreted as old early-type galaxies with a small amount of star
formation. The fact that the UV-excess red galaxies are more abundant than the
quiescent red ones suggests that a large fraction of old galaxies in this
cluster are still forming stars to some extent. However, a sequence of
quiescent red galaxies is clearly identified on the R-K versus K
color-magnitude (C-M) diagram. The slope and zero point of their C-M relation
appear to be consistent with those expected for the precursors of the C-M
relation of present-day cluster ellipticals when observed at z=1.1. We estimate
the Abell richness class of the cluster to be R \sim 1. New X-ray data
presented here place an upper limit of L_x < 2 10^{44} erg s^{-1} for the
cluster luminosity. Inspections of the wider optical images reveal some lumpy
structure, suggesting that the whole system is still dynamically young.Comment: 54 pages including 13 Postscript figures, 1 jpg figure, and 1 table,

Soft Phonon Anomalies in the Relaxor Ferroelectric Pb(Zn_1/3Nb_2/3)_0.92Ti_0.08O_3
Neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the polar TO phonon mode
dispersion in the cubic relaxor Pb(Zn_1/3Nb_2/3)_0.92Ti_0.08O_3 at 500K reveal
anomalous behavior in which the optic branch appears to drop precipitously into
the acoustic branch at a finite value of the momentum transfer q=0.2 inverse
Angstroms, measured from the zone center. We speculate this behavior is the
result of nanometer-sized polar regions in the crystal.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Dynamic scaling and aging phenomena in short-range Ising spin glass: CuCoCl-FeCl graphite bi-intercalation compound
Static and dynamic behavior of short-range Ising-spin glass
CuCoCl-FeCl graphite bi-intercalation compounds
(GBIC) has been studied with SQUID DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. The
dependence of the zero-field relaxation time above a spin-freezing
temperature (= 3.92 0.11 K) is well described by critical slowing
down. The absorption below decreases with
increasing angular frequency , which is in contrast to the case of 3D
Ising spin glass. The dynamic freezing temperature at which
dd, is determined as a function of
frequency (0.01 Hz 1 kHz) and magnetic field (0 5 kOe). The dynamic scaling analysis of the relaxation time
defined as at suggests the absence of
SG phase in the presence of (at least above 100 Oe). Dynamic scaling
analysis of and near
leads to the critical exponents ( = 0.36 0.03, = 3.5
0.4, = 1.4 0.2, = 6.6 1.2, = 0.24
0.02, and = 0.13 0.02). The aging phenomenon is studied through
the absorption below . It obeys a
power-law decay with an exponent . The rejuvenation effect is also observed under
sufficiently large (temperature and magnetic-field) perturbations.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev. B (September 1,

The contribution of the Unresolved Extragalactic Radio Sources to the Brightness Temperature of the sky
The contribution of the Unresolved Extragalactic Radio Sources to the diffuse
brightness of the sky was evaluated using the source number - flux measurements
available in literature. We first optimized the fitting function of the data
based on number counts distribution. We then computed the brightness
temperature at various frequencies from 151 MHz to 8440 MHz and derived its
spectral dependence. As expected the frequency dependence can be described by a
power law with a spectral index , in agreement with the
flux emitted by the {\it steep spectrum} sources. The contribution of {\it flat
spectrum} sources becomes relevant at frequencies above several GHz. Using the
data available in literature we improved our knowledge of the brightness of the
unresolved extragalactic radio sources. The results obtained have general
validity and they can be used to disentangle the various contributions of the
sky brightness and to evaluate the CMB temperature.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Dielectric nonlinearity of relaxor ferroelectric ceramics at low ac drives
Dielectric nonlinear response of
(PbMgNbO)(PbTiO) (0.9PMN-0.1PT) relaxor
ceramics was investigated under different ac drive voltages. It was observed
that: (i) the dielectric permittivity is independent on ac field amplitude at
high temperatures; (ii) with increasing ac drive, the permittivity maximum
increases, and the temperature of the maximum shifts to lower temperature;
(iii) the nonlinear effect is weakened when the measurement frequency
increases. The influences of increasing ac drive were found to be similar to
that of decreasing frequency. It is believed that the dielectric nonlinearities
of relaxors at low drives can be explained by the phase transition theory of
ergodic space shrinking in succession. A Monte Carlo simulation was performed
on the flips of micro polarizations at low ac drives to verify the theory.Comment: Submitted to J. Phys.: Cond. Matte
Evidence for radial flow of thermal dileptons in high-energy nuclear collisions
The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has studied low-mass dimuon production in
158 AGeV In-In collisions. An excess of pairs above the known meson decays has
been reported before. We now present precision results on the associated
transverse momentum spectra. The slope parameter Teff extracted from the
spectra rises with dimuon mass up to the rho, followed by a sudden decline
above. While the initial rise is consistent with the expectations for radial
flow of a hadronic decay source, the decline signals a transition to an
emission source with much smaller flow. This may well represent the first
direct evidence for thermal radiation of partonic origin in nuclear collisions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
Meson Production in In-In Collisions and the Puzzle
The NA60 experiment measured dimuon production in In-In collisions at 158
AGeV. This paper presents a high statistics measurement of with
the specific objective to provide insight on the puzzle, i.e. the
difference in the inverse slopes and absolute yields measured by NA49 and
NA50 in the kaon and lepton channel, respectively. Transverse momentum
distributions were studied as a function of centrality. The slope parameter
shows a rapid increase with centrality, followed by a saturation. Variations of
with the fit range of the order of 15 MeV were observed, possibly as a
consequence of radial flow. The meson yield normalized to the number of
participants increases with centrality and is consistently higher than the
yield measured by the NA49 experiment at any centrality.Comment: 4 Pages, 2 Figures. Proceedings of the 20 International
