    Sustainable Business Law? The Key Role of Corporate Governance and Finance

    Lawyers, law schools, and corporate entities have shown an increased interest in sustainable business strategies. This is reflected by the increase in sustainability practice groups, law school courses, and textbooks focusing on the relationship between sustainability and business law; lawyers moving into executive-level sustainability positions in the private sector; and the proliferation of corporate sustainability policies, as well as increased interest in mitigating climate risk and engaging in sustainable finance. But what exactly is sustainable business law, and what role do lawyers play in advancing sustainability in the corporate world? This Article argues that “sustainable business law” has emerged as a distinct area of law and serves as an introductory explanation to define and understand the growing subject matter at the intersection of sustainability, business, and the law, as well as explores the key role that corporate governance and finance play in achieving sustainability

    Human Research Program Space Radiation Standing Review Panel (SRP)

    The Space Radiation Standing Review Panel (SRP) met at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) on December 9-11, 2009 to discuss the areas of current and future research targeted by the Space Radiation Program Element (SRPE) of the Human Research Program (HRP). Using evidence-based knowledge as a background for identified risks to astronaut health and performance, NASA had identified gaps in knowledge to address those risks. Ongoing and proposed tasks were presented to address the gaps. The charge to the Space Radiation SRP was to review the gaps, evaluate whether the tasks addressed these gaps and to make recommendations to NASA s HRP Science Management Office regarding the SRP's review. The SRP was requested to evaluate the practicality of the proposed efforts in light of the demands placed on the HRP. Several presentations were made to the SRP during the site visit and the SRP spent sufficient time to address the SRP charge. The SRP made a final debriefing to the HRP Program Scientist, Dr. John B. Charles, on December 11, 2009. The SRP noted that current SRPE strategy is properly science-based and views this as the best assurance of the likelihood that answers to the questions posed as gaps in knowledge can be found, that the uncertainty in risk estimates can be reduced, and that a solid, cost-effective approach to risk reduction solutions is being developed. The current approach of the SRPE, based on the use of carefully focused research solicitations, requiring thorough peer-review and approaches demonstrated to be on the path to answering the NASA strategic questions, addressed to a broad extramural community of qualified scientists, optimally positioned to take advantage of serendipitous discoveries and to leverage scientific advances made elsewhere, is sound and appropriate. The SRP viewed with concern statements by HRP implying that the only science legitimately deserving support should be "applied" or, in some instances that the very term "research" might be frowned upon. We understand the desire of management to ensure that research stay focused on mission objectives, but the terms used are code words fraught with different meaning for scientists. Such expressions, taken at face value, convey a profoundly flawed view of science, can easily lead down counterproductive paths, and have the potential to irretrievably corrupt NASA requirements. The SRP understands and endorses the mandate to keep research efforts focused on the mission needs. However, thoughtful application of knowledge gained by understanding the mechanisms and pathways of biological effects cannot be replaced

    Sources and hydrothermal alteration of organic matter in Quaternary sediments: A synthesis of studies from the Central Gulf of California

    Deep sea drilling in the Central Gulf of California, a young and active spreading centre, shows that the high heat flow typical of these regions causes extensive alteration of sediment organic matter, especially near sills and above magma chambers where hydrothermal activity is concentrated. Even on the nearby passive margin, where there are no sills, heat flow is moderately high and hydrocarbon generation has begun in immature sequences. Migrating light hydrocarbons are detected especially where hydrothermal activity is concentrated. Thermogenic methane is more widespread, though not in the passive margin bordering the spreading centre. Despite the incidence of hydrocarbon generation and migration, the amounts of hydrocarbons involved are relatively small and apparently do not lead to commercially significant accumulations of petroleum.The organic matter in these sediments is mostly marine because the Gulf of California generally has low runoff from land and highly productive surface waters. Turbidites rich in terrigenous organic material are locally abundant in the mainly pelagic section in the Guaymas Basin.     Fast Grain Mapping with Sub-Nanometer Resolution Using 4D-STEM with Grain Classification by Principal Component Analysis and Non-Negative Matrix Factorization

    High-throughput grain mapping with sub-nanometer spatial resolution is demonstrated using scanning nanobeam electron diffraction (also known as 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy, or 4D-STEM) combined with high-speed direct electron detection. An electron probe size down to 0.5 nm in diameter is implemented and the sample investigated is a gold-palladium nanoparticle catalyst. Computational analysis of the 4D-STEM data sets is performed using a disk registration algorithm to identify the diffraction peaks followed by feature learning to map the individual grains. Two unsupervised feature learning techniques are compared: Principal component analysis (PCA) and non-negative matrix factorization (NNMF). The characteristics of the PCA versus NNMF output are compared and the potential of the 4D-STEM approach for statistical analysis of grain orientations at high spatial resolution is discussed

    Population Health Solutions for Assessing Cognitive Impairment in Geriatric Patients.

    In December 2017, the National Academy of Neuropsychology convened an interorganizational Summit on Population Health Solutions for Assessing Cognitive Impairment in Geriatric Patients in Denver, Colorado. The Summit brought together representatives of a broad range of stakeholders invested in the care of older adults to focus on the topic of cognitive health and aging. Summit participants specifically examined questions of who should be screened for cognitive impairment and how they should be screened in medical settings. This is important in the context of an acute illness given that the presence of cognitive impairment can have significant implications for care and for the management of concomitant diseases as well as pose a major risk factor for dementia. Participants arrived at general principles to guide future screening approaches in medical populations and identified knowledge gaps to direct future research. Key learning points of the summit included: recognizing the importance of educating patients and healthcare providers about the value of assessing current and baseline cognition;emphasizing that any screening tool must be appropriately normalized and validated in the population in which it is used to obtain accurate information, including considerations of language, cultural factors, and education; andrecognizing the great potential, with appropriate caveats, of electronic health records to augment cognitive screening and tracking of changes in cognitive health over time

    Simian Varicella Virus DNA in Saliva and Buccal Cells After Experimental Acute Infection in Rhesus Macaques

    Simian varicella virus (SVV) infection of non-human primates is the counterpart of varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection in humans. To develop non-invasive methods of assessing SVV infection, we tested for the presence of SVV DNA in saliva, as has been documented in human VZV infection, and in buccal cells to determine whether epithelial cells might provide a more reliable source of material for analysis. Five rhesus macaques intratracheally inoculated with SVV all developed varicella with viremia and macular-papular skin rash in 1–2 weeks, which resolved followed by establishment of latency. DNA extracted from longitudinal blood peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), saliva and buccal samples collected during acute infection and establishment of latency were analyzed by real-time qPCR. After intratracheal inoculation, viremia was observed, with peak levels of 101–102 copies of SVV DNA in 100 ng of PBMC DNA at 4 and 7 days post inoculation (dpi), which then decreased at 9–56 dpi. In saliva and buccal cells at 7 dpi, 101–104 copies and 101–105 copies of SVV DNA in 100 ng of cellular DNA, respectively, were detected in all the five monkeys. At 9 dpi, saliva samples from only two of the five monkeys contained SVV DNA at 102–103 copies/100 ng of saliva DNA, while buccal cells from all five monkeys showed 100–103 copies of SVV DNA/100 ng of buccal cell DNA. Similar to viremia, SVV DNA in saliva and buccal cells at 11–56 dpi was lower, suggesting clearance of viral shedding. SVV DNA levels were generally higher in buccal cells than in saliva. Our findings indicate that SVV shedding into the oral cavity parallels acute SVV infection and underscore the relevance of both saliva and buccal cell samples to monitor acute varicella virus infection
