    Molecular Systematics of the Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Endemic Brachyuran Family Bythograeidae: A Comparison of Three Bayesian Species Tree Methods

    Brachyuran crabs of the family Bythograeidae are endemic to deep-sea hydrothermal vents and represent one of the most successful groups of macroinvertebrates that have colonized this extreme environment. Occurring worldwide, the family includes six genera (Allograea, Austinograea, Bythograea, Cyanagraea, Gandalfus, and Segonzacia) and fourteen formally described species. To investigate their evolutionary relationships, we conducted Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on DNA sequences from fragments of three mitochondrial genes (16S rDNA, Cytochrome oxidase I, and Cytochrome b) and three nuclear genes (28S rDNA, the sodium–potassium ATPase a-subunit ‘NaK’, and Histone H3A). We employed traditional concatenated (i.e., supermatrix) phylogenetic methods, as well as three recently developed Bayesian multilocus methods aimed at inferring species trees from potentially discordant gene trees. We found strong support for two main clades within Bythograeidae: one comprising the members of the genus Bythograea; and the other comprising the remaining genera. Relationships within each of these two clades were partially resolved. We compare our results with an earlier hypothesis on the phylogenetic relationships among bythograeid genera based on morphology. We also discuss the biogeography of the family in the light of our results. Our species tree analyses reveal differences in how each of the three methods weighs conflicting phylogenetic signal from different gene partitions and how limits on the number of outgroup taxa may affect the results

    Adrenal function may be abnormal in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aims to evaluate adrenal steroid response to the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test and to find out the effect of high serum testosterone levels on adrenal response. We have also investigated any subtle enzyme deficiency by extending blood sampling to 2 h with 30 min intervals following ACTH administration. Twenty-eight women with PCOS and 18 healthy controls without hirsutism and oligomenorrhea were included in the study. After determining their serum basal levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), and progesterone, ACTH stimulation test was performed. The change in serum 17-OHP and the summed rate of change in serum 17-OHP and progesterone levels were estimated and 95th percentile for each value was computed. Women with PCOS were heavier and move hirsute than controls (p < 0.01, p < 0.001, respectively). Sevum basal LH, LH: FSH ratio, testosterone (p < 0.001, for all), DHEAS (p < 0.01), and 17-OHP (p < 0.05) were higher in women with PCOS. All of the 17-OHP measurements, including basal and each 30 min interval after the administration of ACTH, were higher in women with PCOS than those of healthy controls (p < 0.05, p < 0.002, p < 0.001, p < 0.015, p < 0.018, respectively). However, the incremental changes in serum 17-OHP30-0, 17-OHP60-0, 17-OHP90-0, 17-OHP120-0, and the summed rate of change in serum 17-OHP and progesterone in women with PCOS were not different from those in healthy controls. The incremental response in terms of serum progesterone, DHEAS, and testosterone levels to the ACTH stimulation test for each 30 min interval was not different in women with PCOS than in healthy controls. We were not able to show any critical value for serum basal testosterone and DHEAS levels that would effect response to ACTH stimulation in terms of 17-OHP levels. We have concluded that extending the duration of blood sampling up to 2h has no advantage in evaluating adrenal steroid response to ACTH stimulation. Since serum 17-OHP levels remain within normal limits in response to ACTH stimulation, the origin of elevated serum basal 17-OHP levels may be polycystic ovaries. Elevated serum testosterone level doer not have any adverse effect on adrenal function. Sevum progesterone measurement seems to have no place in the diagnosis of 21-hydroxylase deficiency.     Assessing the Impact of Wildlife on Vegetation Cover Change, Northeast Namibia, Based on MODIS Satellite Imagery (2002–2021)

    Human–wildlife conflict in the Zambezi region of northeast Namibia is well documented, but the impact of wildlife (e.g., elephants) on vegetation cover change has not been adequately addressed. Here, we assessed human–wildlife interaction and impact on vegetation cover change. We analyzed the 250 m MODIS and ERA5 0.25° × 0.25° drone and GPS-collar datasets. We used Time Series Segmented Residual Trends (TSS-RESTREND), Mann–Kendall Test Statistics, Sen’s Slope, ensemble, Kernel Density Estimation (KDE), and Pearson correlation methods. Our results revealed (i) widespread vegetation browning along elephant migration routes and within National Parks, (ii) Pearson correlation (p-value = 5.5 × 10−8) showed that vegetation browning areas do not sustain high population densities of elephants. Currently, the Zambezi has about 12,008 elephants while these numbers were 1468, 7950, and 5242 in 1989, 1994, and 2005, respectively, (iii) settlements and artificial barriers have a negative impact on wildlife movement, driving vegetation browning, and (iv) vegetation greening was found mostly within communal areas where intensive farming and cattle grazing is a common practice. The findings of this study will serve as a reference for policy and decision makers. Future studies should consider integrating higher resolution multi-platform datasets for detailed micro analysis and mapping of vegetation cover change

    Effects of hormone replacement therapy on lipid peroxides and oxidation system in postmenopausal women

    A short-term evaluation of 6 months of estrogen therapy on oxidant status in 38 postmenopausal women was conducted. The levels of serum lipid peroxidation products, glutathione (GSH) status, and glutathione-related enzymes were evaluated before and after 6 months of hormone replacement therapy. After 6 months of estrogen treatment there was a significantly increased concentration of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), which are an end product of lipid peroxidation. This was accompanied by a significant increase in the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). However, the activities of glutathione reductase (GSSG-R) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly decreased and total protein thiols were reduced.
