    Evidence for Antipodal Hot Spots During X-ray Bursts From 4U 1636-536

    The discovery of high-frequency brightness oscillations in thermonuclear X-ray bursts from several neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries has important implications for the beat frequency model of kilohertz quasi-periodic brightness oscillations, the propagation of nuclear burning, the structure of the subsurface magnetic fields in neutron stars, and the equation of state of high-density matter. These implications depend crucially on whether the observed frequency is the stellar spin frequency or its first overtone. Here we report an analysis of five bursts from 4U 1636-536 which exhibit strong oscillations at approximately 580 Hz. We show that combining the data from the first 0.75 seconds of each of the five bursts yields a signal at 290 Hz that is significant at the 4×10−54\times 10^{-5} level when the number of trials is taken into account. This strongly indicates that 290 Hz is the spin frequency of this neutron star and that 580 Hz is its first overtone, in agreement with other arguments about this source but in contrast to suggestions in the literature that 580 Hz is the true spin frequency. The method used here, which is an algorithm for combining time series data from the five bursts so that the phases of the 580 Hz oscillations are aligned, may be used in any source to search for weak oscillations that have frequencies related in a definite way to the frequency of a strong oscillation.Comment: 9 pages including one figure, uses aaspp4.sty, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters on September 1

    Prediction of stable walking for a toy that cannot stand

    Previous experiments [M. J. Coleman and A. Ruina, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 3658 (1998)] showed that a gravity-powered toy with no control and which has no statically stable near-standing configurations can walk stably. We show here that a simple rigid-body statically-unstable mathematical model based loosely on the physical toy can predict stable limit-cycle walking motions.     We observe that the appearance of two transport relaxation times in the various transport coefficients of cuprate metals may be understood in terms of scattering processes that discriminate between currents that are even, or odd under the charge conjugation operator.     Fermionization, Convergent Perturbation Theory, and Correlations in the Yang-Mills Quantum Field Theory in Four Dimensions

    We show that the Yang-Mills quantum field theory with momentum and spacetime cutoffs in four Euclidean dimensions is equivalent, term by term in an appropriately resummed perturbation theory, to a Fermionic theory with nonlocal interaction terms. When a further momentum cutoff is imposed, this Fermionic theory has a convergent perturbation expansion. To zeroth order in this perturbation expansion, the correlation function E(x,y)E(x,y) of generic components of pairs of connections is given by an explicit, finite-dimensional integral formula, which we conjecture will behave as E(x,y)∼∣x−y∣−2−2dG,E(x,y) \sim |x - y|^{-2 - 2 d_G}, \noindent for ∣x−y∣>>0,|x-y|>>0, where dGd_G is a positive integer depending on the gauge group G.G.     Gender and educational leadership in England: a comparison of secondary headteachers' views over time

    In the context of gender being a barrier to accessing leadership, this paper presents a comparison of the views of men and women head teacher (principals) of secondary schools in England in the 1990s and in 2004. The same survey instrument was used on both occasions. The perceptions of the head teachers show change in some areas and no change in others. Overall, women are more likely to become head teachers and are now less likely to be categorised into pastoral roles, but in some cases women still meet prejudice from governors and others in the wider community. Women head teachers are more likely to have partners and children than in the 1990s, sharing equally or carrying most of the domestic responsibilities, whereas male colleagues are most likely to have partners who take the majority of responsibility in the home. Essentialist stereotypes about women and men as leaders still prevail, although both the women and men head teachers see themselves as adopting a traditionally ‘feminine’ style of leadership. Women head teachers are likely to see some benefits in being a woman in a role stereotypically associated with men. However, there has been an increase in the proportion of women who feel that they have to prove their worth as a leader, and this may be linked with increased levels of accountability in schools

    The flow of interstellar neutral particles into the interplanetary medium and their subsequent ionization in the presence of the electromagnetic field of the solar wind can cause a loss of field angular momentum by the solar wind. One effect of this loss of field angular momentum is a significant unwinding of the spiral field. This effect is evaluated using simple models for neutral density and ion production. For a free-stream interstellar medium with a neutral hydrogen density of 1 per cubic centimeter and a velocity relative to the sun of 10 to 20 km per second, the spiral angle at the orbit of Jupiter will be less than its nominal value of 45 deg at the orbit of the earth
