Relation between Tunneling and Particle Production in Vacuum Decay
The field-theoretical description of quantum fluctuations on the background
of a tunneling field is revisited in the case of a functional
Schrodinger approach. We apply this method in the case when quantum
fluctuations are coupled to the field through a mass-squared term,
which is 'time-dependent' since we include the dynamics of . The
resulting mode functions of the fluctuation field, which determine the quantum
state after tunneling, display a previously unseen resonance effect when their
mode number is comparable to the curvature scale of the bubble. A detailed
analysis of the relation between the excitations of the field about the true
vacuum (interpreted as particle creation) and the phase shift coming from

Identifying Effective Behavior Change Techniques for Alcohol and Illicit Substance Use During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review.
Background: During pregnancy, consuming alcohol and using illicit drugs can have serious health implications for both mother and child. Behavioral change interventions, especially those underpinned by theoretical constructs, can be effective in reducing harmful substance use among pregnant women. Purpose: To understand what type of behavior change mechanisms could be useful in reducing alcohol consumption or achieving abstinence from illicit drug use during pregnancy, this review aimed to identify behavior change techniques (BCTs), the smallest, active components of interventions that may be effective. It also aimed to establish the extent that psychosocial-based theories were used to inform intervention design. Methods: To identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs), five databases were searched electronically from the end search dates of the most recent Cochrane systematic reviews on behavioral interventions for each behavior, until March 2018. Within the RCTs, intervention descriptions were analyzed for BCT content and extent of theory use in the intervention design process and outcome measurements, in each trial, was established. "Effectiveness percentages," the number of times a BCT had been a component of an effective intervention divided by the total number of interventions it had been used in, were calculated for BCTs used in two or more trials. Results: Including all RCTs from the Cochrane reviews, and those published subsequently, nine alcohol and six illicit drug trials were identified. Interventions tested in four alcohol RCTs and no illicit drugs RCTs showed positive results. Subsequent data were extracted for alcohol consumption trials only. Thirteen BCTs showed "potential effectiveness" for alcohol consumption. Six of nine included alcohol trials reported using theory but not extensively. Conclusions: Action planning, behavioral contract, prompts/cues, self-talk, offer/direct toward written material, problem solving, feedback on behavior, social support (unspecified), information about health consequences, behavior substitution, assess current readiness and ability to reduce excess alcohol consumption, goal setting (behavior), and tailor interactions appropriately are BCTs that could be useful in helping reduce alcohol consumption among pregnant women

Lipid and Protein Transfer between Nanolipoprotein Particles and Supported Lipid Bilayers.
A nanolipoprotein particle (NLP) is a lipid bilayer disc stabilized by two amphipathic "scaffold" apolipoproteins. It has been most notably utilized as a tool for solubilizing a variety of membrane proteins while preserving structural and functional properties. Transfer of functional proteins from NLPs into model membrane systems such as supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) would enable new opportunities, for example, two-dimensional protein crystallization and studies on protein-protein interactions. This work used fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy to investigate the interaction between NLPs and SLBs. When incubated with SLBs, NLPs were found to spontaneously deliver lipid and protein cargo. The impact of membrane composition on lipid exchange was explored, revealing a positive correlation between the magnitude of lipid transfer and concentration of defects in the target SLB. Incorporation of lipids capable of binding specifically to polyhistidine tags encoded into the apolipoproteins also boosted transfer of NLP cargo. Optimal conditions for lipid and protein delivery from NLPs to SLBs are proposed based on interaction mechanisms

Personhood, consciousness, and god : how to be a proper pantheist
© Springer Nature B.V. 2018In this paper I develop a theory of personhood which leaves open the possibility of construing the universe as a person. If successful, it removes one bar to endorsing pantheism. I do this by examining a rising school of thought on personhood, on which persons, or selves, are understood as identical to episodes of consciousness. Through a critique of this experiential approach to personhood, I develop a theory of self as constituted of qualitative mental contents, but where these contents are also capable of unconscious existence. On this theory, though we can be conscious of our selves, consciousness turns out to be inessential to personhood. Quantum critical behavior of electrons at the edge of charge order
We consider quantum critical points (QCP) in which quantum fluctuations
associated with charge rather than magnetic order induce unconventional
metallic properties. Based on finite-T calculations on a two-dimensional
extended Hubbard model we show how the coherence scale T* characteristic of
Fermi liquid behavior of the homogeneous metal vanishes at the onset of charge
order. A strong effective mass enhancement reminiscent of heavy fermion
behavior indicates the possible destruction of quasiparticles at the QCP.
Experimental probes on quarter-filled layered organic materials are proposed
