Elliptic Reciprocity
The paper introduces the notions of an elliptic pair, an elliptic cycle and
an elliptic list over a square free positive integer d. These concepts are
related to the notions of amicable pairs of primes and aliquot cycles that were
introduced by Silverman and Stange. Settling a matter left open by Silverman
and Stange it is shown that for d=3 there are elliptic cycles of length 6. For
d not equal to 3 the question of the existence of proper elliptic lists of
length n over d is reduced to the the theory of prime producing quadratic
polynomials. For d=163 a proper elliptic list of length 40 is exhibited. It is
shown that for each d there is an upper bound on the length of a proper
elliptic list over d. The final section of the paper contains heuristic
arguments supporting conjectured asymptotics for the number of elliptic pairs
below integer X. Finally, for d congruent to 3 modulo 8 the existence of
infinitely many anomalous prime numbers is derived from Bunyakowski's

Radial Redshift Space Distortions
The radial component of the peculiar velocities of galaxies cause
displacements in their positions in redshift space. We study the effect of the
peculiar velocities on the linear redshift space two point correlation
function. Our analysis takes into account the radial nature of the redshift
space distortions and it highlights the limitations of the plane parallel
approximation. We consider the problem of determining the value of \beta and
the real space two point correlation function from the linear redshift space
two point correlation function. The inversion method proposed here takes into
account the radial nature of the redshift space distortions and can be applied

Beyond capitalism and liberal democracy: on the relevance of GDH Coleâs sociological critique and alternative
This article argues for a return to the social thought of the often ignored early 20th-century English thinker GDH Cole. The authors contend that Cole combined a sociological critique of capitalism and liberal democracy with a well-developed alternative in his work on guild socialism bearing particular relevance to advanced capitalist societies. Both of these, with their focus on the limitations on âfree communal serviceâ in associations and the inability of capitalism to yield emancipation in either production or consumption, are relevant to social theorists looking to understand, critique and contribute to the subversion of neoliberalism. Therefore, the authors suggest that Coleâs associational sociology, and the invitation it provides to think of formations beyond capitalism and liberal democracy, is a timely and valuable resource which should be returned to
Algebraic properties of generalized Rijndael-like ciphers
We provide conditions under which the set of Rijndael functions considered as
permutations of the state space and based on operations of the finite field
\GF (p^k) ( a prime number) is not closed under functional
composition. These conditions justify using a sequential multiple encryption to
strengthen the AES (Rijndael block cipher with specific block sizes) in case
AES became practically insecure. In Sparr and Wernsdorf (2008), R. Sparr and R.
Wernsdorf provided conditions under which the group generated by the
Rijndael-like round functions based on operations of the finite field \GF
(2^k) is equal to the alternating group on the state space. In this paper we
provide conditions under which the group generated by the Rijndael-like round
functions based on operations of the finite field \GF (p^k) () is

Accurate radial velocity and metallicity of the Large Magellanic Cloud old globular clusters NGC1928 and NGC1939
We present results obtained from spectroscopic observations of red giants located in the fields of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular clusters (GCs) NGC1928 and NGC1939. We used the GMOS and AAOmega+2dF spectrographs to obtain spectra centred on the Ca II triplet, from which we derived individual radial velocities (RVs) and metallicities. From cluster members we derived mean RVs of RVNGC1928 = 249.58±4.65 km s-1 and RVNGC1939 = 258.85±2.08 km s-1, and mean metallicities of [Fe/H]NGC1928 = -1.30±0.15 dex and [Fe/H]NGC1939 = -2.00±0.15 dex. We found that both GCs have RVs and positions consistent with being part of the LMC disc, so that we rule out any possible origin, but in the same galaxy. By computing the best solution of a disc that fully contains each GC, we obtained circular velocities for the 15 known LMC GCs. We found that 11/15 of the GCs share the LMC rotation derived from HST and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This outcome reveals that the LMC disc existed since the very early epoch of the galaxy formation and experienced the steep relatively fast chemical enrichment shown by its GC metallicities. The four remaining GCs turned out to have circular velocities not compatible with an in situ cluster formation, but rather with being stripped from the SMC.Fil: Piatti, Andres Eduardo. The cosmological origin of the Tully-Fisher relation
We use high-resolution cosmological simulations that include the effects of
gasdynamics and star formation to investigate the origin of the Tully-Fisher
relation in the standard Cold Dark Matter cosmogony. Luminosities are computed
for each model galaxy using their full star formation histories and the latest
spectrophotometric models. We find that at z=0 the stellar mass of model
galaxies is proportional to the total baryonic mass within the virial radius of
their surrounding halos. Circular velocity then correlates tightly with the
total luminosity of the galaxy, reflecting the equivalence between mass and
circular velocity of systems identified in a cosmological context. The slope of
the relation steepens slightly from the red to the blue bandpasses, and is in
fairly good agreement with observations. Its scatter is small, decreasing from
\~0.45 mag in the U-band to ~0.34 mag in the K-band. The particular
cosmological model we explore here seems unable to account for the zero-point
of the correlation. Model galaxies are too faint at z=0 (by about two
magnitudes) if the circular velocity at the edge of the luminous galaxy is used
as an estimator of the rotation speed. The Tully-Fisher relation is brighter in
the past, by about ~0.7 magnitudes in the B-band at z=1, at odds with recent
observations of z~1 galaxies. We conclude that the slope and tightness of the
Tully-Fisher relation can be naturally explained in hierarchical models but
that its normalization and evolution depend strongly on the star formation
algorithm chosen and on the cosmological parameters that determine the
universal baryon fraction and the time of assembly of galaxies of different

Smoothly-varying hopping rates in driven flow with exclusion
We consider the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process
(TASEP) with position-dependent hopping rates. The problem is solved,in a mean
field/adiabatic approximation, for a general (smooth) form of spatial rate
variation. Numerical simulations of systems with hopping rates varying linearly
against position (constant rate gradient), for both periodic and open boundary
conditions, provide detailed confirmation of theoretical predictions,
concerning steady-state average density profiles and currents, as well as
