Operations research investigations of satellite power stations
A systems model reflecting the design concepts of Satellite Power Stations (SPS) was developed. The model is of sufficient scope to include the interrelationships of the following major design parameters: the transportation to and between orbits; assembly of the SPS; and maintenance of the SPS. The systems model is composed of a set of equations that are nonlinear with respect to the system parameters and decision variables. The model determines a figure of merit from which alternative concepts concerning transportation, assembly, and maintenance of satellite power stations are studied. A hybrid optimization model was developed to optimize the system's decision variables. The optimization model consists of a random search procedure and the optimal-steepest descent method. A FORTRAN computer program was developed to enable the user to optimize nonlinear functions using the model. Specifically, the computer program was used to optimize Satellite Power Station system components
Self-fulfilling debt crises
We characterize the values of government debt and the debt's maturity structure under which financial crises brought on by a loss of confidence in the government can arise within a dynamic, stochastic general equilibrium model. We also characterize the optimal policy response of the government to the threat of such a crisis. We show that when the country's fundamentals place it inside the crisis zone, the government is motivated to reduce its debt and exit the crisis zone because this leads to an economic boom and a reduction in the interest rate on the government's debt. We show that this reduction may be quite gradual if debt is high or the probability of a crisis is low. We also show that, while lengthening the maturity of the debt can shrink the crisis zone, credibility-inducing policies can have perverse effects.Debt
Automating the parallel processing of fluid and structural dynamics calculations
The NASA Lewis Research Center is actively involved in the development of expert system technology to assist users in applying parallel processing to computational fluid and structural dynamic analysis. The goal of this effort is to eliminate the necessity for the physical scientist to become a computer scientist in order to effectively use the computer as a research tool. Programming and operating software utilities have previously been developed to solve systems of ordinary nonlinear differential equations on parallel scalar processors. Current efforts are aimed at extending these capabilities to systems of partial differential equations, that describe the complex behavior of fluids and structures within aerospace propulsion systems. This paper presents some important considerations in the redesign, in particular, the need for algorithms and software utilities that can automatically identify data flow patterns in the application program and partition and allocate calculations to the parallel processors. Reputation spillover across relationships: reviving reputation models of debt
A traditional explanation for why sovereign governments repay debts is that they want to keep good reputations so they can easily borrow more. Bulow and Rogoff show that this argument is invalid under two conditions: (i) there is a single debt relationship, and (ii) regardless of their past actions, governments can earn the (possibly state-contingent) market rate of return by saving abroad. Bulow and Rogoff conjecture that, even under condition (ii), in more general reputation models with multiple relationships and spillover across them, reputation may support debt. This paper shows what is needed for this conjecture to be true.Debt
Reviving reputation models of international debt
A traditional explanation for why sovereign countries repay debt is that they want to keep a good reputation so they can easily borrow more. This explanation does not hold if a country has access to an adequate means of savings regardless of the country's past actions. With such access, a country gets only transient benefits from maintaining a good relationship with bankers, and such benefits cannot support borrowing. However, if a country is involved in a myriad of trust relationships, the country's reputation can spill over to a nondebt relationship which has enduring benefits. Such a spillover can allow a country's reputation to support a large amount of borrowing.International finance
Parity effect and single-electron injection for Josephson-junction chains deep in the insulating state
We have made a systematic investigation of charge transport in 1D chains of
Josephson junctions where the characteristic Josephson energy is much less than
the single-island Cooper-pair charging energy, . Such
chains are deep in the insulating state, where superconducting phase coherence
across the chain is absent, and a voltage threshold for conduction is observed
at the lowest temperatures. We find that Cooper-pair tunneling in such chains
is completely suppressed. Instead, charge transport is dominated by tunneling
of single electrons, which is very sensitive to the presence of BCS
quasiparticles on the superconducting islands of the chain. Consequently we
observe a strong parity effect, where the threshold voltage vanishes sharply at
a characteristic parity temperature , which is significantly lower than
the the critical temperature, . A measurable and thermally-activated
zero-bias conductance appears above , with an activation energy equal to
the superconducting gap, confirming the role of thermally-excited
quasiparticles. Conduction below and above the voltage threshold occurs
via injection of single electrons/holes into the Cooper-pair insulator, forming
a non-equilibrium steady state with a significantly enhanced effective
temperature. Our results explicitly show that single-electron transport
dominates deep in the insulating state of Josephson-junction arrays. This
conduction process has mostly been ignored in previous studies of both
superconducting junction arrays and granular superconducting films below the
superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Incorporating concern for relative wealth into economic models
This article develops a simple model that captures a concern for relative standing, or status. This concern is instrumental, in the sense that individuals do not get utility directly from their relative standing, but, rather, the concern is induced because their relative standing affects their consumption of standard commodities. The article investigates the consequences of a concern for relative wealth in models in which individuals are making labor/leisure decisions. The analysis shows how individuals' decisions are affected by the aggregate income distribution and how the concern for relative wealth can generate behavior that can be interpreted as conspicuous consumption when wealth is not directly observable.Consumption (Economics) ; Wealth
Scheme for direct measurement of a general two-qubit Hamiltonian
The construction of two-qubit gates appropriate for universal quantum
computation is of enormous importance to quantum information processing.
Building such gates is dependent on accurate knowledge of the interaction
dynamics between two qubit systems. This letter will present a systematic
method for reconstructing the full two-qubit interaction Hamiltonian through
experimental measures of concurrence. This not only gives a convenient method
for constructing two qubit quantum gates, but can also be used to
experimentally determine various Hamiltonian parameters in physical systems. We
show explicitly how this method can be employed to determine the first and
second order spin-orbit corrections to the exchange coupling in quantum dots.Comment: 4 Pages, 1 Figur
