    An electrophysiological investigation of co-referential processes in visual narrative comprehension

    Visual narratives make use of various means to convey referential and co-referential meaning, so comprehenders must recognize that different depictions across sequential images represent the same character(s). In this study, we investigated how the order in which different types of panels in visual sequences are presented affects how the unfolding narrative is comprehended. Participants viewed short comic strips while their electroencephalo- gram (EEG) was recorded. We analyzed evoked and induced EEG activity elicited by both full panels (showing a full character) and refiner panels (showing only a zoom of that full panel), and took into account whether they preceded or followed the panel to which they were co-referentially related (i.e., were cataphoric or anaphoric). We found that full panels elicited both larger N300 amplitude and increased gamma-band power compared to refiner panels. Anaphoric panels elicited a sustained negativity compared to cataphoric panels, which appeared to be sensitive to the referential status of the anaphoric panel. In the time-frequency domain, anaphoric panels elicited reduced 8–12 Hz alpha power and increased 45–65 Hz gamma-band power compared to cataphoric panels. These findings are consistent with models in which the processes involved in visual narrative compre- hension partially overlap with those in language comprehension

    Meaning above the head: combinatorial constraints on the visual vocabulary of comics

    “Upfixes” are “visual morphemes” originating in comics where an element floats above a character’s head (ex. lightbulbs or gears). We posited that, similar to constructional lexical schemas in language, upfixes use an abstract schema stored in memory, which constrains upfixes to locations above the head and requires them to “agree” with their accompanying facial expressions. We asked participants to rate and interpret both conventional and unconventional upfixes that either matched or mismatched their facial expression (Experiment 1) and/or were placed either above or beside the head (Experiment 2). Interpretations and ratings of conventionality and face–upfix matching (Experiment 1) along with overall comprehensibility (Experiment 2) suggested that both constraints operated on upfix understanding. Because these constraints modulated both conventional and unconventional upfixes, these findings support that an abstract schema stored in long-term memory allows for generalisations beyond memorised individual items

    Identification of Faint Chandra X-ray Sources in the Core-Collapsed Globular Cluster NGC 6752

    We have searched for optical identifications for 39 Chandra X-ray sources that lie within the 1.9 arcmin half-mass radius of the nearby (d = 4.0 kpc), core-collapsed globular cluster, NGC 6752, using deep Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC imaging in B435, R625, and H alpha. Photometry of these images allows us to classify candidate counterparts based primarily on color-magnitude and color-color diagram location. The color-color diagram is particularly useful for quantifying the H alpha line equivalent width. In addition to recovering 11 previously detected optical counterparts, we propose 20 new optical IDs. In total, there are 16 likely or less certain cataclysmic variables (CVs), nine likely or less certain chromospherically active binaries, three galaxies, and three active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The latter three sources, which had been identified as likely CVs by previous investigations, now appear to be extragalactic objects based on their proper motions. As we previously found for NGC 6397, the CV candidates in NGC 6752 fall into a bright group that is centrally concentrated relative to the turnoff-mass stars and a faint group that has a spatial distribution that is more similar to that of the turnoff-mass stars. This is consistent with an evolutionary scenario in which CVs are produced by dynamical interactions near the cluster center and diffuse to larger radius orbits as they age.Comment: 26 pages, 18 figure
