    Miscibility and Viscoelastic Properties of Acrylic Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Poly(methyl methacrylate) Blends

    Submitted to POLYMER, January 2005We investigate the miscibility of acrylic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) [characteristic size d ≈ 2 nm] and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) in order to determine the effect of well-dispersed POSS nanoparticles on the thermomechanical properties of PMMA. Two different acrylic POSS species (unmodified and hydrogenated) were blended separately with PMMA at volume fractions up to φ = 0.30. Both POSS species have a plasticizing effect on PMMA by lowering the glass transition temperature Tg and decreasing the melt-state linear viscoelastic moduli measured in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The unmodified acrylic-POSS has better miscibility with PMMA than the hydrogenated form, approaching complete miscibility for loadings φ Tg of PMMA, far less than the 17.4°C decrease in the glass transition temperature observed in a blend of 5 vol% dioctyl phthalate (DOP) in PMMA; however, the decrease in the glass transition temperature per added plasticizer molecule is nearly the same in the unmodified acrylic-POSS-PMMA blend compared with the DOP-PMMA blend. Time-temperature superposition (TTS) was applied successfully to the storage and loss moduli data and the resulting shift factors were correlated with a significant increase in free volume of the blends. The fractional free volume f0 = 0.046 for PMMA at T0 = 170°C while for a blend of 5 vol% unmodified acrylic-POSS in PMMA f0 = 0.057, which corresponds to an addition of 0.47 nm3 per added POSS molecule at φ = 0.05. The degree of dispersion was characterized using both wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Diffraction patterns for both blend systems show clear evidence of phase separation at φ = 0.20 and higher, but no significant phase separation is evident at φ = 0.10 and lower. The storage modulus measured in DMA indicates appreciable phase separation for unmodified acrylic POSS loadings φ = 0.10, while no evidence of phase separation is present in the φ = 0.05 blend in DMA.AFOSR (DURINT program

    A Determination of the Wave Forms and Laws of Propagation and Dissipation of Ballistic Shock Waves

    Experiments to ascertain the wave forms and laws of propagation and dissipation of ballistic shock waves to large distances (80 yards) from the bullet trajectory are described. Calibers 0.30, 0.50, 20 mm, and 40 mm were studied. In every case an N‐shaped wave profile was observed consisting of a sudden rise in pressure, the “head discontinuity,” followed by an approximately linear decline to a pressure about equally far below atmospheric and then a second sudden return, the “tail discontinuity,” to atmospheric pressure. The peak amplitudes of this disturbance are found to diminish about as the inverse 3/4 power of the miss‐distance (perpendicular distance from the trajectory) while the period T′ (measured between the discontinuous fronts) increases about as the 1/4 power of the miss‐distance for calibers 0.30, 0.50, and 20 mm. For 40‐mm shells the amplitude decays a little faster, about as the inverse 0.9 power of miss‐distance over the range studied. A theory taking account of the dissipation of the N‐wave energy into heat is developed to explain the observed behavior. A method of measuring absolute N‐wave amplitudes by observing the rate of change of period T′ with propagation is described.     Thermorheological Properties Near the Glass Transition of Oligomeric Poly(methyl methacrylate) Blended with Acrylic Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Nanocages

    Submitted to Rheologica ActaTwo distinct oligomeric species of similar mass and chemical functionality (Mw ≈ 2,000 g/mol), one a linear methyl methacrylate oligomer (radius of gyration Rg ≈ 1.1 nm) and the other a hybrid organic-inorganic polyhedral silsesquioxane nanocage (methacryl-POSS, r ≈ 1.0 nm), were subjected to thermal and rheological tests to compare the behaviors of these geometrically dissimilar molecules over the entire composition range. The glass transition temperatures of the blends varied monotonically between the glass transition temperatures of the pure oligomer (Tg = â47.3°C) and the pure POSS (Tg = â61.0°C). Blends containing high POSS contents (with volume fraction φ_POSS ⥠0.90) exhibited enhanced enthalpy relaxation in DSC measurements, and the degree of enthalpy relaxation was used to calculate the kinetic fragility indices m of the oligomeric MMA (m = 59) and the POSS (m = 74). The temperature dependences of the viscosities were fitted by the free volume-based WLF-VFT framework and a dynamic scaling relation. The calculated values of the fragility from the WLF-VFT fits were similar for the POSS (m = 82) and for the oligomer (m = 76), and the dynamic scaling exponent was similar for the oligomeric MMA and the POSS. Within the range of known fragilities for glass-forming liquids, the temperature dependence of the viscosity was found to be similarly fragile for the two species. The difference in shape of the nanocages and oligomer chains is unimportant in controlling the glass-forming properties of the blends at low volume fractions ( φPOSS < 0.20); however, at higher volume fractions, adjacent POSS cages begin to crowd each other, leading to an increase in the fractional free volume at the glass transition temperature and the observed enhanced enthalpy relaxation in DSC.AFOSR (DURINT Program

    Highly Ionized High Velocity Clouds: Intergalactic Gas in the Local Group or Distant Gas in the Galactic Halo?

    We have recently identified several high velocity (V < -100 km/s) clouds in the directions of Mrk 509 and PKS 2155-304 that have unusual ionization properties. The clouds exhibit strong C IV absorption with little or no detectable low ion (C II, Si II) absorption or H I 21cm emission. As the closest known analog to the outer diffuse halos of damped Ly-alpha absorbers and the low H I column density metal line absorption systems seen in the spectra of high redshift quasars, these "C IV-HVCs" present unique opportunities for relating the conditions within the Milky Way halo and nearby intergalactic gas to the properties of galactic halos at higher redshift. The C IV-HVCs have ionization properties consistent with photoionization by extragalactic background radiation, though some contribution by collisional ionization within a hot plasma cannot be ruled out. The clouds are probably low density [n(H) ~ 10^-4 cm^-3], large [greater than several kiloparsecs], and mostly ionized [n(HI)/n(H) ~ 10^-3] regions located well beyond the neutral gas layer of the Galaxy. The presence of weak H I-HVCs detected through 21cm emission near both sight lines indicates that the C IV-HVCs trace the extended, ionized, low density regions of the H I-HVCs. Several lines of evidence, including very low thermal pressures (P/k ~ 2 cm^-3 K), favor a location for the C IV-HVCs in the Local Group or very distant Galactic halo.Comment: AASTEX manuscript and tables, 55 pages, 8 postscript figures.     G313.3+00.3: A New Planetary Nebula discovered by the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Spitzer Space Telescope

    We present a new planetary nebula, first identified in images from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, although not recognized at that time. Recent observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope during the GLIMPSE Legacy program have rediscovered the object. The high-resolution radio and infrared images enable the identification of the central star or its wind, the recognition of the radio emission as thermal, and the probable presence of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons in and around the source. These lead to the conclusion that G313.3+00.3 is a planetary nebula. This object is of particular interest because it was discovered solely through radio and mid-infrared imaging, without any optical (or near-infrared) confirmation, and acts as a proof of concept for the discovery of many more highly extinguished planetary nebulae. G313.3+00.3 is well-resolved by both the instruments with which it was identified, and suffers extreme reddening due to its location in the Scutum-Crux spiral arm.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX (aastex), incl. 8 PostScript (eps) figures and 1 table.     Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Pion Scattering from Li

    We show that the neutron and proton transition densities predicted by recent quantum Monte Carlo calculations for A=6,7 nuclei are consistent with pion scattering from 6Li and 7Li at energies near the Delta resonance.     Disease and treatment patterns among patients with pouch-related conditions in a cohort of large tertiary care inflammatory bowel disease centers in the United States

    BACKGROUND: Gaps exist in our understanding of the clinical course of pouch-related disorders. METHODS: We evaluated baseline disease activity and longitudinal treatment patterns among patients with inflammatory conditions of the pouch. RESULTS: Among 468 patients with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA), 94 (20%) had acute pouchitis, 96 (21%) had chronic pouchitis, and 192 (41%) had Crohn disease of the pouch. Following an IPAA, 38% of patients were treated with a biologic and 11% underwent inflammatory bowel disease- or bowel-related surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment patterns after IPAA indicate that pouch-related disorders have a significant impact on individual patients and the healthcare system
