    Studies in the use of cloud type statistics in mission simulation

    A study to further improve NASA's global cloud statistics for mission simulation is reported. Regional homogeneity in cloud types was examined; most of the original region boundaries defined for cloud cover amount in previous studies were supported by the statistics on cloud types and the number of cloud layers. Conditionality in cloud statistics was also examined with special emphasis on temporal and spatial dependencies, and cloud type interdependence. Temporal conditionality was found up to 12 hours, and spatial conditionality up to 200 miles; the diurnal cycle in convective cloudiness was clearly evident. As expected, the joint occurrence of different cloud types reflected the dynamic processes which form the clouds. Other phases of the study improved the cloud type statistics for several region and proposed a mission simulation scheme combining the 4-dimensional atmospheric model, sponsored by MSFC, with the global cloud model

    All-Optical Depletion of Dark Excitons from a Semiconductor Quantum Dot

    Semiconductor quantum dots are considered to be the leading venue for fabricating on-demand sources of single photons. However, the generation of long-lived dark excitons imposes significant limits on the efficiency of these sources. We demonstrate a technique that optically pumps the dark exciton population and converts it to a bright exciton population, using intermediate excited biexciton states. We show experimentally that our method considerably reduces the DE population while doubling the triggered bright exciton emission, approaching thereby near-unit fidelity of quantum dot depletion.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Occurrence of noise in alumina-on-alumina total hip arthroplasty. A survey on 284 consecutive hips

    SummaryBackgroundAlumina-on-alumina bearings have been accepted as a valuable alternative for young and active patients. Alumina fractures, and socket loosening were the main complications reported. But, with the increasing number of prostheses implanted, noise occurrence appeared as a new concern. The primary aim of the present study was to quantify the prevalence of noticing noise in a population having received alumina-on-alumina total hip arthroplasty as well as its eventual impact on outcome.Patients and methodsTwo hundred and eighty-four ceramic-on-ceramic hips were performed in 238 patients from January 2003 to December 2004. The average age was 52.4±13.4years (range, 13 to 74years). All the hips received the same prosthesis (Ceraver-Osteal™) with alumina bearing components (Ceraver-Osteal™): 32mm liners were used for cups of 50mm or larger and 28mm liners for cups smaller than 48mm; the minimal alumina thickness was 6mm. The acetabular component (Cerafit™) was hemispherical, coated with a hydroxyapatite layer and press-fit fixed. The stem (Cerafit™) was a straight tapered cementless stem, fully coated with a hydroxyapatite layer. Clearance between femoral head and liner was between 20 and 50 microns. A retrospective survey was conducted by an independent surgeon who did not participate to surgery in 2007. He conducted phone interviews of patients using a standard questionnaire. No suggestion was offered on how they could describe the noise and they felt free to use the word that they considered to be the most adapted. Satisfaction was evaluated. When the noise was present, X-rays were taken to assess if sign of bearings fracture was present.ResultsFour patients (six hips) died of unrelated causes during the follow-up period. Three patients (three hips) live outside France and could not be followed (1.3%). Nine patients (10 hips) could not be traced and were considered lost to follow-up (3.8%). Two hundred and twenty-two patients with 265 hips, therefore, were included (nine using bearing components in 28mm diameter and 265 in 32mm). Twenty-eight hips experienced noise generation (10.6%). It was defined as a snap for six patients, as a cracking sound by six, as rustling by six patients, as a squeaking by seven patients (2.6%), a tinkling by two patients, one patient was unable to define the sound she felt. No factor related to the patient influenced the occurrence of noise. Twelve patients were dissatisfied with the result of their hip prosthesis, five of them experienced noise (41.7%); 210 were satisfied or very satisfied, 23 of them experiencing noise (11%); this difference was significant (P=0.002).ConclusionThe origins of noise occurrence are unknown. Squeaking may be related to generation of stripe wear and absence of sufficient lubrication. Other types of noise can be due to microseparation, occult dislocation, impingement between the femoral neck and the acetabular rim.Level of evidenceLevel IV. Retrospective study

    Determinisitic Writing and Control of the Dark Exciton Spin using Short Single Optical Pulses

    We demonstrate that the quantum dot-confined dark exciton forms a long-lived integer spin solid state qubit which can be deterministically on-demand initiated in a pure state by one optical pulse. Moreover, we show that this qubit can be fully controlled using short optical pulses, which are several orders of magnitude shorter than the life and coherence times of the qubit. Our demonstrations do not require an externally applied magnetic field and they establish that the quantum dot-confined dark exciton forms an excellent solid state matter qubit with some advantages over the half-integer spin qubits such as the confined electron and hole, separately. Since quantum dots are semiconductor nanostructures that allow integration of electronic and photonic components, the dark exciton may have important implications on implementations of quantum technologies consisting of semiconductor qubits.Comment: Added two authors, minor edits to figure captions, expanded discussion of dark exciton eigenstate

    Long-term quality of life after en-bloc vertebrectomy: 25 patients followed up for 9 years

    AbstractObjectiveAssess quality-of-life results in patients who have undergone extensive curative surgery for spinal tumor and compare them to the general population in France.IntroductionLife expectancy is not the only criterion to assess the outcomes after massive tumor resections. Residual quality of life is also crucial. An indication for major surgery for spinal tumor should take the patient's long-term functional status into account, but the literature is limited on this question.Materials and methodsTwenty-five living patients from a group of 120 operated were assessed, all of whom were operated on by the same surgeon between 1984 and 2007. The mean follow-up was 9 years (range, 3–25 years). The mean age at surgery was 49 years. The patients completed different functional and quality-of-life questionnaires: the Oswestry Disability Index version 2 (ODI), the PROLO, the Karnofsky Index of performance status (KI), the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG), the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), and the EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ5D). In addition, each patient was clinically and radiographically evaluated. Subgroups were identified considering the number of levels resected and histology. Their results on the SF-36 were compared with the results from the general population in France.ResultsThe mean PCS (physical component summary of the SF-36) was 52.4, the MCS (mental component summary, the psychological component of the SF-36) was 47.7, the ODI was 18.2, the PROLO was 7, the ECOG was 1, and the KI was 80%. The resections at three levels were associated with worse results in terms of quality of life, but overall, the results were similar to the French general population data for all categories of the SF-36.ConclusionAppropriate indications for massive spinal resection give good oncological and functional results. Although the expected life expectancy justifies this aggressive surgery, postoperative quality of life shows that it can also be successful on a functional level.Level of evidenceLevel IV; retrospective clinical study

    Evolutionary history of tall fescue morphotypes inferred from molecular phylogenetics of the Lolium-Festuca species complex

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The agriculturally important pasture grass tall fescue (<it>Festuca arundinacea </it>Schreb. syn. <it>Lolium arundinaceum </it>(Schreb.) Darbysh.) is an outbreeding allohexaploid, that may be more accurately described as a species complex consisting of three major (Continental, Mediterranean and rhizomatous) morphotypes. Observation of hybrid infertility in some crossing combinations between morphotypes suggests the possibility of independent origins from different diploid progenitors. This study aims to clarify the evolutionary relationships between each tall fescue morphotype through phylogenetic analysis using two low-copy nuclear genes (encoding plastid acetyl-CoA carboxylase [<it>Acc1</it>] and <it>centroradialis </it>[<it>CEN</it>]), the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (rDNA ITS) and the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) genome-located <it>matK </it>gene. Other taxa within the closely related <it>Lolium</it>-<it>Festuca </it>species complex were also included in the study, to increase understanding of evolutionary processes in a taxonomic group characterised by multiple inter-specific hybridisation events.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Putative homoeologous sequences from both nuclear genes were obtained from each polyploid species and compared to counterparts from 15 diploid taxa. Phylogenetic reconstruction confirmed <it>F. pratensis </it>and <it>F. arundinacea </it>var. <it>glaucescens </it>as probable progenitors to Continental tall fescue, and these species are also likely to be ancestral to the rhizomatous morphotype. However, these two morphotypes are sufficiently distinct to be located in separate clades based on the ITS-derived data set. All four of the generated data sets suggest independent evolution of the Mediterranean and Continental morphotypes, with minimal affinity between cognate sequence haplotypes. No obvious candidate progenitor species for Mediterranean tall fescues were identified, and only two putative sub-genome-specific haplotypes were identified for this morphotype.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study describes the first phylogenetic analysis of the <it>Festuca </it>genus to include representatives of each tall fescue morphotype, and to use low copy nuclear gene-derived sequences to identify putative progenitors of the polyploid species. The demonstration of distinct tall fescue lineages has implications for both taxonomy and molecular breeding strategies, and may facilitate the generation of morphotype and/or sub-genome-specific molecular markers.</p

    The Level-0 Muon Trigger for the LHCb Experiment

    A very compact architecture has been developed for the first level Muon Trigger of the LHCb experiment that processes 40 millions of proton-proton collisions per second. For each collision, it receives 3.2 kBytes of data and it finds straight tracks within a 1.2 microseconds latency. The trigger implementation is massively parallel, pipelined and fully synchronous with the LHC clock.
