All-Optical Depletion of Dark Excitons from a Semiconductor Quantum Dot
Semiconductor quantum dots are considered to be the leading venue for
fabricating on-demand sources of single photons. However, the generation of
long-lived dark excitons imposes significant limits on the efficiency of these
sources. We demonstrate a technique that optically pumps the dark exciton
population and converts it to a bright exciton population, using intermediate
excited biexciton states. We show experimentally that our method considerably
reduces the DE population while doubling the triggered bright exciton emission,
approaching thereby near-unit fidelity of quantum dot depletion.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Psychological impacts of challenging behaviour and motivational orientation in staff supporting individuals with autistic spectrum conditions
Despite increased risk of experiencing challenging behaviour, psychological impacts on community and residential staff supporting adults with autistic spectrum conditions are under-explored. Studies examining related roles indicate protective psychological factors may help maintain staff well-being. This study investigated relationships between motivational orientation (eudaimonic or hedonic), challenging behaviour frequency and type (physical, verbal or self-injurious), and psychological impacts (anxiety, depression and life satisfaction). Participants (N=99) were recruited from six organisations providing autism-specific adult services within Scotland. A series of binary logistic regressions demonstrated weekly challenging behaviour exposure (compared to monthly or daily) significantly increased the likelihood of anxiety caseness. Increased eudaimonic motivation significantly reduced the likelihood of anxiety caseness while also predicting higher life satisfaction. Further, having high levels of eudaimonic motivation appeared to moderate the impact of weekly challenging behaviour exposure on anxiety. No motivational orientation or challenging behaviour factor significantly predicted depression. This sample also demonstrated higher anxiety, lower depression, and equivalent life satisfaction levels compared to general population norms. The results highlight the need for considering staff’s motivational orientations, their frequency of exposure to challenging behaviour, and both positive and negative psychological outcomes, if seeking to accurately quantify or improve well-being in this staff population
Studies in the use of cloud type statistics in mission simulation
A study to further improve NASA's global cloud statistics for mission simulation is reported. Regional homogeneity in cloud types was examined; most of the original region boundaries defined for cloud cover amount in previous studies were supported by the statistics on cloud types and the number of cloud layers. Conditionality in cloud statistics was also examined with special emphasis on temporal and spatial dependencies, and cloud type interdependence. Temporal conditionality was found up to 12 hours, and spatial conditionality up to 200 miles; the diurnal cycle in convective cloudiness was clearly evident. As expected, the joint occurrence of different cloud types reflected the dynamic processes which form the clouds. Other phases of the study improved the cloud type statistics for several region and proposed a mission simulation scheme combining the 4-dimensional atmospheric model, sponsored by MSFC, with the global cloud model
Determinisitic Writing and Control of the Dark Exciton Spin using Short Single Optical Pulses
We demonstrate that the quantum dot-confined dark exciton forms a long-lived
integer spin solid state qubit which can be deterministically on-demand
initiated in a pure state by one optical pulse. Moreover, we show that this
qubit can be fully controlled using short optical pulses, which are several
orders of magnitude shorter than the life and coherence times of the qubit. Our
demonstrations do not require an externally applied magnetic field and they
establish that the quantum dot-confined dark exciton forms an excellent solid
state matter qubit with some advantages over the half-integer spin qubits such
as the confined electron and hole, separately. Since quantum dots are
semiconductor nanostructures that allow integration of electronic and photonic
components, the dark exciton may have important implications on implementations
of quantum technologies consisting of semiconductor qubits.Comment: Added two authors, minor edits to figure captions, expanded

On-demand source of maximally entangled photon-pairs using the biexciton-exciton radiative cascade
We perform full time resolved tomographic measurements of the polarization
state of pairs of photons emitted during the radiative cascade of the confined
biexciton in a semiconductor quantum dot. The biexciton was deterministically
initiated using a -area pulse into the biexciton two-photon absorption
resonance. Our measurements demonstrate that the polarization states of the
emitted photon pair are maximally entangled. We show that the measured degree
of entanglement depends solely on the temporal resolution by which the time
difference between the emissions of the photon pair is determined. A route for
fabricating an on demand source of maximally polarization entangled photon
pairs is thereby provided
Influence of Enterococci and Thermophilic Starter Bacteria on Cheddar Cheese Flavour
End of Project ReportThis project set out to identify suitable enterococci and thermophilic starter strains which could be added to the cheese during manufacture (as starter adjuncts) with the specific aims of enhancing flavour during ripening as well as facilitating flavour diversity - a trait sought by many commercial Cheddar companies. This project confirmed the potential of thermophilic lactic acid strains to affect flavour when used as starter adjuncts in Cheddar cheese manufacture. Their use can also lead to the development of novel flavours. Many adjunct cultures proposed to-date to enhance Cheddar flavour are composed of strains of lactococcal starter, selected for their flavouring capacity. However, application of such strains in industry would lead to increased probability of phage attack on the primary starter. On the other hand, thermophilic lactic acid strains are phage unrelated to conventional starter and thus would not lead to the introduction of starter specific phage into the cheese plant.

Discovery of Very High-Energy Gamma-Ray Radiation from the BL Lac 1ES 0806+524
The high-frequency-peaked BL-Lacertae object \objectname{1ES 0806+524}, at
redshift z=0.138, was observed in the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray regime
by VERITAS between November 2006 and April 2008. These data encompass the two-,
and three-telescope commissioning phases, as well as observations with the full
four-telescope array. \objectname{1ES 0806+524} is detected with a statistical
significance of 6.3 standard deviations from 245 excess events. Little or no
measurable variability on monthly time scales is found. The photon spectrum for
the period November 2007 to April 2008 can be characterized by a power law with
photon index between
300 GeV and 700 GeV. The integral flux above 300 GeV is
which corresponds to 1.8% of the Crab Nebula flux. Non contemporaneous
multiwavelength observations are combined with the VHE data to produce a
broadband spectral energy distribution that can be reasonably described using a

Detection of Extended VHE Gamma Ray Emission from G106.3+2.7 with VERITAS
We report the detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from
supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7. Observations performed in 2008 with the
VERITAS atmospheric Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope resolve extended emission
overlapping the elongated radio SNR. The 7.3 sigma (pre-trials) detection has a
full angular extent of roughly 0.6deg by 0.4deg. Most notably, the centroid of
the VHE emission is centered near the peak of the coincident 12CO (J = 1-0)
emission, 0.4deg away from the pulsar PSR J2229+6114, situated at the northern
end of the SNR. Evidently the current-epoch particles from the pulsar wind
nebula are not participating in the gamma-ray production. The VHE energy
spectrum measured with VERITAS is well characterized by a power law dN/dE =
N_0(E/3 TeV)^{-G} with a differential index of G = 2.29 +/- 0.33stat +/-
0.30sys and a flux of N_0 = (1.15 +/- 0.27stat +/- 0.35sys)x 10^{-13} cm^{-2}
s^{-1} TeV^{-1}. The integral flux above 1 TeV corresponds to ~5 percent of the
steady Crab Nebula emission above the same energy. We describe the observations
and analysis of the object and briefly discuss the implications of the
