Infectious Rhinotracheitis as It Appears in a Feeding Area

The increased incidence of infectious rhinotracheitis, red nose or rhinitis \u27is rapidly becoming a condition of major concern to the practicing veterinarian in a feeding area. It is primarily a respiratory infection involving the nasal passages, the larynx, and the trachea, with occasional extension into the bronchi. It was first observed to veterinarians in this northeast Nebraska area in the early 1950s. At that time the disease had not been identified and was considered to be an influenza-like condition which, due to the dusty yards, later developed into a diphtheria-pneumonia-like condition. In the fall of 1954 the incidence of this condition increased and its onset became more explosive, resulting in much more loss of gain and, in some instances, loss of cattle

Local symmetry properties of pure 3-qubit states

Entanglement types of pure states of 3 qubits are classified by means of their stabilisers in the group of local unitary operations. It is shown that the stabiliser is generically discrete, and that a larger stabiliser indicates a stationary value for some local invariant. Entanglement with phase decoherence

The system of an atom couples to two distinct optical cavities with phase decoherence is studied by making use of a dynamical algebraic method. We adopt the concurrence to characterize the entanglement between atom and cavities or between two optical cavities in the presence of the phase decoherence. It is found that the entanglement between atom and cavities can be controlled by adjusting the detuning parameter. Finally, we show that even if the atom is initially prepared in a maximally mixed state, it can also entangle the two mode cavity fields.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, lete

Un nuevo enfoque para el mejoramiento de arroz en América Latina

La crisis ocasionada por la deuda externa ha debilitado los programas nacionales de investigación de arroz en América Latina, y ha aumentado su dependencia de los programas regionales y mundiales del CIAT y del IRRI.Si bien el germoplasma mejorado producido por los IARC ha traído consigo cierto grado de uniformidad genética, también ha brindado inmensos beneficios a los programas nacionales de investigación agrícola y a los productores de arroz de la región. Estos beneficios se ven hoy en día amenazados, ya que tanto el IRRI como el CIAT, en respuesta a las presiones ejercidas por sus donantes, han comenzado a "avanzar" hacia la biotecnología, y están tratando de extrapolar el éxito que han tenido en sus programas de mejoramiento de cultivos a la compleja labor del manejo de los recursos. Una nueva estrategia para el mejoramiento del arroz en América Latina debe tener en cuenta los puntos siguientes: 1) desde el punto de vista de la diversidad genética, es conveniente abandonar el método de mejoramiento centralizado empleado por el IRRI y el CIAT; 2) el CIAT reducirá los recursos destinados al mejoramiento convencional del arroz, yse ocupará más de las biotecnologías que apoyen el mejoramiento del arroz; y 3) un plan factible (con posibilidades de éxito) debe utilizar, de manera más eficaz, los recursos humanos de los programas nacionales de investigación que hoy languidecen a causa de las restricciones económicas. Una estrategia semejante debe incluir: 1) la identificación y el establecimiento de sitios experimentales esenciales para el mejoramiento; 2) la evolución de INGER hacia una entidad cooperativa de contratación; y 3) el CIAT considerado como fuente de tecnología avanzada

Aerogel Blanket Insulation Materials for Cryogenic Applications

Aerogel blanket materials for use in thermal insulation systems are now commercially available and implemented by industry. Prototype aerogel blanket materials were presented at the Cryogenic Engineering Conference in 1997 and by 2004 had progressed to full commercial production by Aspen Aerogels. Today, this new technology material is providing superior energy efficiencies and enabling new design approaches for more cost effective cryogenic systems. Aerogel processing technology and methods are continuing to improve, offering a tailor-able array of product formulations for many different thermal and environmental requirements. Many different varieties and combinations of aerogel blankets have been characterized using insulation test cryostats at the Cryogenics Test Laboratory of NASA Kennedy Space Center. Detailed thermal conductivity data for a select group of materials are presented for engineering use. Heat transfer evaluations for the entire vacuum pressure range, including ambient conditions, are given. Examples of current cryogenic applications of aerogel blanket insulation are also given. Technological Solutions to China's Carbon Neutrality in the Steel and Cement Sectors

China has set Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and carbon neutrality targets without providing expected industry-specific technological details. By focusing on the steel and cement industries in China, this study analyzes the energy consumption of different technology routes, decarbonization pathways of innovative technologies, and the synergistic impact of air pollutants. The study finds that the incumbent technology routes for steel and cement production have limited carbon reductions, and the deployment of innovative technologies (carbon capture, utilization, and storage [CCUS], electrolytic- and hydrogen-based, and scrap-based technologies) need to be accelerated to achieve carbon neutrality targets. We find that the net-zero emissions pathway relying upon innovative technologies needs less investment than the NDCs scenario. Furthermore, electric arc furnace deployment will be mainly concentrated in Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Sichuan, while CCUS should be mainly in Hebei, Shandong, Liaoning, and Jiangsu provinces. The increased electrification of innovative technologies in steel and cement requires a shift in energy inputs from fossil energy to electricity. A combination of strict climate change mitigation and air pollution control will have higher synergistic effects

Three qubit entanglement within graphical Z/X-calculus

The compositional techniques of categorical quantum mechanics are applied to analyse 3-qubit quantum entanglement. In particular the graphical calculus of complementary observables and corresponding phases due to Duncan and one of the authors is used to construct representative members of the two genuinely tripartite SLOCC classes of 3-qubit entangled states, GHZ and W. This nicely illustrates the respectively pairwise and global tripartite entanglement found in the W- and GHZ-class states. A new concept of supplementarity allows us to characterise inhabitants of the W class within the abstract diagrammatic calculus; these method extends to more general multipartite qubit states.Comment: In Proceedings HPC 2010, arXiv:1103.226
