The effects of ability tracking of future primary school teachers on student performance

    Get PDF
Because of the Dutch tracking system, primary school teachers in the Netherlands can have a vocational or a higher secondary background. Policymakers and school principles worry that teachers with vocational backgrounds are less capable to teach math and reading. This study therefore examines the effects of ability tracking of future primary school teachers on the students' math and reading performance. We exploit data of 91 schools for all primary school children in grades 3, 4 and 5 and identify the tracking effect by exploiting unique information on how teachers are assigned to classes based on their teaching abilities. The estimation results for math (reading) indicate that test scores are .2 (.12) of a standard deviation lower if their teacher had a vocational background. The results for reading are, however, not signicant at the 10% condence level and the tracking estimates appear to be less stable and precise

However, the mechanicalbehavior of tungsten is crucial, as it is inherently brittle at room temperature. As possibility to overcome this brittleness, a composite materialcan be formed, which shows pseudo-ductility and therefore avoidscatastrophic failure of the material. A possibility to produce such aWf/W-composite is chemical vapor deposition and chemical vapor infiltration, where tungsten is deposited on small tungsten wires throughthe reaction of WF6 and H2. With ongoing infiltration time, pores areformed between the fibers, which decrease in size through the chemicalreaction. For better process understanding, a pore model was established, which solves the mass balance inside the pore and the resultingpore diameter simultaneously. It shows a significant difference in diameterfor longer infiltration times. This behavior shall be proved inexperiments with an experimental pore, which is similar to the simulatedone. Furthermore also kinetic investigations on the chemicalsurface reaction are carried out to increase the process understanding.Part: MMType: Vortrag;TalkTopic: Transport (Diffusion, Leitfähigkeit,Wärme)/ Transport (Diffusion, conductivity, heat)Email: [email protected]

Money in monetary policy design: monetary cross-checking in the New-Keynesian model

    Get PDF
In the New-Keynesian model, optimal interest rate policy under uncertainty is formulated without reference to monetary aggregates as long as certain standard assumptions on the distributions of unobservables are satisfied. The model has been criticized for failing to explain common trends in money growth and inflation, and that therefore money should be used as a cross-check in policy formulation (see Lucas (2007)). We show that the New-Keynesian model can explain such trends if one allows for the possibility of persistent central bank misperceptions. Such misperceptions motivate the search for policies that include additional robustness checks. In earlier work, we proposed an interest rate rule that is near-optimal in normal times but includes a cross-check with monetary information. In case of unusual monetary trends, interest rates are adjusted. In this paper, we show in detail how to derive the appropriate magnitude of the interest rate adjustment following a significant cross-check with monetary information, when the New-Keynesian model is the central bank’s preferred model. The cross-check is shown to be effective in offsetting persistent deviations of inflation due to central bank misperceptions. Microstructure, mechanical behaviour and fracture of pure tungsten wire after different heat treatments

Plastic deformation of tungsten wire is an effective source of toughening tungsten fibre-reinforced tungsten composites (Wf/W) and other tungsten fibre-reinforced composites. To provide a reference for optimization of those composites, unconstrained pure tungsten wire is studied after various heat treatments in terms of microstructure, mechanical behaviour and fracture mode. Recrystallization is already observed at a relatively low temperature of 1273 K due to the large driving force caused by a high dislocation density. Annealing for 30 min at 1900 K also leads to recrystallization, but causes a rather different microstructure. As-fabricated wire and wire recrystallized at 1273 K for 3 h show fine grains with a high aspect ratio and a substantial plastic deformability: a clearly defined tensile strength, high plastic work, similar necking shape, and the characteristic knife-edge-necking of individual grains on the fracture surface. While the wire recrystallized at 1900 K displays large, almost equiaxed grains with low aspect ratios as well as distinct brittle properties. Therefore, it is suggested that a high aspect ratio of the grains is important for the ductile behaviour of tungsten wire and that embrittlement is caused by the loss of the preferable elongated grain structure rather than by recrystallization. In addition, a detailed evaluation of the plastic deformation behaviour during tensile test gives guidance to the design and optimization of tungsten fibre-reinforced composites

Beryllium migration in JET ITER-like wall plasmas

JET is used as a test bed for ITER, to investigate beryllium migration which connects the lifetime of first-wall components under erosion with tokamak safety, in relation to long-term fuel retention. The (i) limiter and the (ii) divertor configurations have been studied in JET-ILW (JET with a Be first wall and W divertor), and compared with those for the former JET-C (JET with carbon-based plasma-facing components (PFCs)). (i) For the limiter configuration, the Be gross erosion at the contact point was determined in situ by spectroscopy as between 4% (E-in = 35 eV) and more than 100%, caused by Be self-sputtering (E-in = 200 eV). Chemically assisted physical sputtering via BeD release has been identified to contribute to the effective Be sputtering yield, i.e. at E-in = 75 eV, erosion was enhanced by about 1/3 with respect to the bare physical sputtering case. An effective gross yield of 10% is on average representative for limiter plasma conditions, whereas a factor of 2 difference between the gross erosion and net erosion, determined by post-mortem analysis, was found. The primary impurity source in the limiter configuration in JET-ILW is only 25% higher (in weight) than that for the JET-C case. The main fraction of eroded Be stays within the main chamber. (ii) For the divertor configuration, neutral Be and BeD from physically and chemically assisted physical sputtering by charge exchange neutrals and residual ion flux at the recessed wall enter the plasma, ionize and are transported by scrape-off layer flows towards the inner divertor where significant net deposition takes place. The amount of Be eroded at the first wall (21 g) and the Be amount deposited in the inner divertor (28 g) are in fair agreement, though the balancing is as yet incomplete due to the limited analysis of PFCs. The primary impurity source in the JET-ILW is a factor of 5.3 less in comparison with that for JET-C, resulting in lower divertor material deposition, by more than one order of magnitude. Within the divertor, Be performs far fewer re-erosion and transport steps than C due to an energetic threshold for Be sputtering, and inhibits as a result of this the transport to the divertor floor and the pump duct entrance. The target plates in the JET-ILW inner divertor represent at the strike line a permanent net erosion zone, in contrast to the net deposition zone in JET-C with thick carbon deposits on the CFC (carbon-fibre composite) plates. The Be migration identified is consistent with the observed low long-term fuel retention and dust production with the JET-ILW.EURATOM 63305
