Transport Properties of a spinon Fermi surface coupled to a U(1) gauge field
With the organic compound -(BEDT-TTF)-Cu(CN) in mind, we
consider a spin liquid system where a spinon Fermi surface is coupled to a U(1)
gauge field. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism, we derive
the Quantum Boltzmann Equation (QBE) for this system. In this system, however,
one cannot a priori assume the existence of Landau quasiparticles. We show that
even without this assumption one can still derive a linearized equation for a
generalized distribution function. We show that the divergence of the effective
mass and of the finite temperature self-energy do not enter these transport
coefficients and thus they are well-defined. Moreover, using a variational
method, we calculate the temperature dependence of the spin resistivity and
thermal conductivity of this system.Comment: 12 page

Secondary ion mass spectrometry and x-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy of isotopically anomalous organic matter from CR1 chondrites GRO 95577
We located interstellar organics from a CR1 chondrite with NanoSIMS and analyzed FIB-extracted sections with XANES. D-rich material appears not associated with a functional group, whereas 15N-rich matter shows some affinity to nitrile functionality

Correlated Microscale Isotope and Scanning Transmission X-Ray Analyses of Isotopically Anomalous Organic Matter from the CR2 Chondrite EET 92042
We discuss correlated examinations of organic matter from the CR2 chondrite EET 92042, using SIMS, STXM and other methods. We found a large, isotopically highly anomalous region of probable presolar origin that is C- and 13C-poor and 15N-rich
Integration of highly probabilistic sources into optical quantum architectures: perpetual quantum computation
In this paper we introduce a design for an optical topological cluster state
computer constructed exclusively from a single quantum component. Unlike
previous efforts we eliminate the need for on demand, high fidelity photon
sources and detectors and replace them with the same device utilised to create
photon/photon entanglement. This introduces highly probabilistic elements into
the optical architecture while maintaining complete specificity of the
structure and operation for a large scale computer. Photons in this system are
continually recycled back into the preparation network, allowing for a
arbitrarily deep 3D cluster to be prepared using a comparatively small number
of photonic qubits and consequently the elimination of high frequency,
deterministic photon sources.Comment: 19 pages, 13 Figs (2 Appendices with additional Figs.). Comments

Effects of biosolids application on pasture and grape vines in south-eastern Australia
Biosolids were applied to a pasture and a vineyard in south-eastern Australia. At both sites, soil Cd, Cu, and Zn concentrations linearly increased with biosolids application rates although not to the extent of exceeding soil quality guidelines. Biosolids marginally increased soil C and N concentrations at the pasture site but significantly increased P concentrations. With lower overall soil fertility at the vineyard, biosolids increased C, N, and P concentrations. At neither site did biosolids application affect soil microbial endpoints. Biosolids increased pasture production compared to the unfertilised control but had little effect on grape production or quality. Interestingly, over the 3-year trial, there was no difference in pasture production between the biosolids treated plots and plots receiving inorganic fertiliser. These results suggest that biosolids could be used as a fertiliser to stimulate pasture production and as a soil conditioner to improve vineyard soils in this regio
Diazoxide-responsive hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia caused by HNF4A gene mutations
Objective: The phenotype associated with heterozygous HNF4A gene mutations has recently been extended to include diazoxide responsive neonatal hypoglycemia in addition to maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). To date, mutation screening has been limited to patients with a family history consistent with MODY. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of HNF4A mutations in a large cohort of patients with diazoxide responsive hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia (HH).
Subjects and methods: We sequenced the ABCC8, KCNJ11, GCK, GLUD1, and/or HNF4A genes in 220 patients with HH responsive to diazoxide. The order of genetic testing was dependent upon the clinical phenotype.
Results: A genetic diagnosis was possible for 59/220 (27%) patients. KATP channel mutations were most common (15%) followed by GLUD1 mutations causing hyperinsulinism with hyperammonemia (5.9%), and HNF4A mutations (5%). Seven of the 11 probands with a heterozygous HNF4A mutation did not have a parent affected with diabetes, and four de novo mutations were confirmed. These patients were diagnosed with HI within the first week of life (median age 1 day), and they had increased birth weight (median +2.4 SDS). The duration of diazoxide treatment ranged from 3 months to ongoing at 8 years.
Conclusions: In this large series, HNF4A mutations are the third most common cause of diazoxide responsive HH. We recommend that HNF4A sequencing is considered in all patients with diazoxide responsive HH diagnosed in the first week of life irrespective of a family history of diabetes, once KATP channel mutations have been excluded
Stellar Evolution with Enriched Surface Convection Zones I. General Effects of Planet Consumption
Abundance analyses of stars with planets have revealed that their
metallicities are enhanced relative to field stars. Such a trend was originally
suggested to be due to accretion of iron-rich planetary material. Based on this
assumption, we have developed a stellar evolution code to model stars with
non-uniform metallicity distributions. We have calculated ``polluted'' stellar
evolution tracks for stars with M=0.9-1.2 M_sun. Our models encompass a range
of initial metal content from Z=0.01 to 0.03, and include metallicity
enhancements within the stellar convection zone corresponding to
Delta-Z=0.005-0.03. We find that the primary effects of metal enhancement on
stellar structure and evolution are expansion of the convection zone and
downward shift of effective temperature. In addition, we have computed the
surface metallicities expected for stars of different mass for fixed quantities
of pollution; there appears to be no correlation with present observational
data on the metallicities of stars known to harbor planets.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication by the Astrophysical

Surface code quantum computing by lattice surgery
In recent years, surface codes have become a leading method for quantum error
correction in theoretical large scale computational and communications
architecture designs. Their comparatively high fault-tolerant thresholds and
their natural 2-dimensional nearest neighbour (2DNN) structure make them an
obvious choice for large scale designs in experimentally realistic systems.
While fundamentally based on the toric code of Kitaev, there are many variants,
two of which are the planar- and defect- based codes. Planar codes require
fewer qubits to implement (for the same strength of error correction), but are
restricted to encoding a single qubit of information. Interactions between
encoded qubits are achieved via transversal operations, thus destroying the
inherent 2DNN nature of the code. In this paper we introduce a new technique
enabling the coupling of two planar codes without transversal operations,
maintaining the 2DNN of the encoded computer. Our lattice surgery technique
comprises splitting and merging planar code surfaces, and enables us to perform
universal quantum computation (including magic state injection) while removing
the need for braided logic in a strictly 2DNN design, and hence reduces the
overall qubit resources for logic operations. Those resources are further
reduced by the use of a rotated lattice for the planar encoding. We show how
lattice surgery allows us to distribute encoded GHZ states in a more direct
(and overhead friendly) manner, and how a demonstration of an encoded CNOT
between two distance 3 logical states is possible with 53 physical qubits, half
of that required in any other known construction in 2D.Comment: Published version. 29 pages, 18 figure
