    The Proprioception in the Muscles Supplied by the Facial Nerve

    Proprioception is a quality of somatosensibility that informs the central nervous system about the static and dynamics of muscles and joints. In muscles, the proprioceptive originates in the specialized sensory-organ-denominated muscle spindles. Nevertheless, facial muscles lack muscle spindles, but the facial proprioception plays key roles in the regulation and coordination of facial musculature and diverse reflexes. At the basis of these functional characteristics are the multiple communications between the facial and the trigeminal nerves, and neuroanatomical studies have demonstrated that facial proprioceptive impulses are conveyed via branches of the trigeminal nerve to the central nervous system. Substituting muscle spindles facial muscles contain other kinds of proprioceptors of variable morphology that display immunoreactivity for some putative mechanoproteins known to participate in proprioception (acid-sensing ion channel 2, transient receptor potential vanilloid 4, and Piezo2)

    Nonsurgical Strategies for the Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

    Temporomandibular disorders are common maxillofacial disturbs of different etiologies (traumatic, inflammatory, degenerative, or congenital) that course with pain and dysfunctions of the temporomandibular joint. The treatment of these disorders includes systematically administered drugs (especially nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs and corticoids), physical therapies, and minimally invasive therapies that require intraarticular injections. These techniques are directed to clean or drain the articular cavity, to deliver intraarticularly drugs, biologically active compounds (as platelet-rich plasma), or to enhance lubrication (hyaluronic acid). Moreover, minimally invasive strategies are used in regenerative medicine for to deliver cells and stem cells, and nano- or micro-biomaterials. Surgery of temporomandibular disorders is only used in grave diseases that require arthrodesis or remotion of the temporomandibular joint. This review updates the nonsurgical therapeutic strategies to treat temporomandibular disorders, focusing the attention in the articular delivery or hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma, two minimally invasive widely used at present

    Target of rapamycin (TOR) mediates the transduction of nutritional signals into juvenile hormone production

    Anautogeny is a reproductive strategy by which females do not reproduce until they feed. Therefore, nutritional signals must inform the reproductive tissues, and cells that the organism has reached a nutritional status suitable for triggering reproductive processes. One of the possible pathways involved in anautogeny is the >target of rapamycin> (TOR) pathway, which has been described as connecting the nutritional status with growth, proliferation, and cancer. The German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is an anautogenous species whose vitellogenesis is governed by juvenile hormone. In the present report, we describe the cloning of TOR cDNA from B. germanica (BgTOR). Expression studies showed that BgTOR is expressed in adult female corpora allata and fat body. BgTOR knockdown using systemic RNAi in vivo produced a severe inhibition of juvenile hormone synthesis in adult female corpora allata, together with a reduction of mRNA levels corresponding to 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) synthase-1, HMG-CoA synthase-2, and HMG-CoA reductase. In addition, there was a reduction of vitellogenin mRNA in the fat body, and ovaries did not grow. Analysis of TOR expression in corpora allata of fed and starved females suggested that TOR is not regulated at the transcriptional level. Nevertheless, there was a reduction in HMG-CoA synthases and reductase mRNA in corpora allata (but not in the fat body) of starved females, together with a dramatic reduction of juvenile hormone production and ovary development. Taken together, our results indicate that TOR knockdown mimics starvation in terms of corpora allata activity, and suggest that nutritional signals that activate juvenile hormone biosynthesis and vitellogenin production are mediated by the TOR pathway. © 2009 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (Projects BFU2006-01090 (to J.     Structure and dynamics of penumbral filaments

    High-resolution observations of sunspots have revealed the existence of dark cores inside the bright filaments of the penumbra. Here we present the stationary solution of the heat transfer equation in a stratified penumbra consisting of nearly horizontal magnetic flux tubes embedded in a stronger and more vertical field. The tubes and the external medium are in horizontal mechanical equilibrium. This model produces bright filaments with dark cores as a consequence of the higher density of the plasma inside the flux tube, which shifts the surface of optical depth unity toward higher (cooler) layers. Our results suggest that the surplus brightness of the penumbra is a natural consequence of the Evershed flow, and that magnetic flux tubes about 250 km in diameter can explain the morphology of sunspot penumbra.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, conference proceedings: SEA, 2008, Santander, Spai

    Two-point theory for the differential self-interrogation Feynman-alpha method

    A Feynman-alpha formula has been derived in a two region domain pertaining the stochastic differential self-interrogation (DDSI) method and the differential die-away method (DDAA). Monte Carlo simulations have been used to assess the applicability of the variance to mean through determination of the physical reaction intensities of the physical processes in the two domains. More specifically, the branching processes of the neutrons in the two regions are described by the Chapman - Kolmogorov equation, including all reaction intensities for the various processes, that is used to derive a variance to mean relation for the process. The applicability of the Feynman-alpha or variance to mean formulae are assessed in DDSI and DDAA of spent fuel configurations.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to EPJ Plu

    Fluxtube model atmospheres and Stokes V zero-crossing wavelengths

    First results of the inversion of Stokes I and V profiles from plage regions near disk center are presented. Both low and high spatial resolution spectra of FeI 6301.5 and FeI 6302.5 A obtained with the Advanced Stokes Polarimeter (ASP) have been considered for analysis. The thin flux tube approximation, implemented in an LTE inversion code based on response functions, is used to describe unresolved magnetic elements. The code allows the simultaneous and consistent inference of all atmospheric quantities determining the radiative transfer with the sole assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. By considering velocity gradients within the tubes we are able to match the full ASP Stokes profiles. The magnetic atmospheres derived from the inversion are characterized by the absence of significant motions in high layers and strong velocity gradients in deeper layers. These are essential to reproduce the asymmetries of the observed profiles. Our scenario predicts a shift of the Stokes V zero-crossing wavelengths which is indeed present in observations made with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer.Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters (1997) (in press
