Looking Beyond Arts and Crafts: A Book Review of Research for Designers

    Get PDF
In this book review of Research for Designers: A Guide to Methods and Practice, I provide a summary of the book’s content and a brief description of each chapter. I also discuss the book’s structure, organization, strengths, and weaknesses. This review concludes with the evaluation that Research for Designers is an excellent resource and practical guide for novice researchers from any academic discipline, but especially so for researchers and practitioners in the design field

Organizational Conflict and Perceptions of Gender Equality in the United States Military

    Get PDF
Despite historical advancements toward gender equal policies, perceptions and attitudes regarding gender have the ability to impact the recruitment, retention, and promotion of gender minorities in the United States military. This quantitative study analyzed survey results from 493 military veterans regarding the perceptions and attitudes of gender equal statements, and sought to answer three research questions: 1) What factors predict perceptions and attitudes of gender equality in the United States military? 2) Do perceptions and attitudes of gender equality differ between different military branches? 3) Do demographic factors impact perceptions and attitudes of gender equality in the military? Chapter one of this dissertation introduces this study and its purpose, while chapter two discusses the historical background, literature review, and social theories that guided this study. Chapter three states the methodology of the study and outlines the design and limitations of this research. Chapter four presents the results of the study, which were obtained from descriptive statistics and analysis of a multiple regression, ANOVA, T-tests, and chi-squared tests. Results from the study concluded that gender, combat arms, generation, and military branch were significant variables in this research. Finally, chapter five summarizes findings, discusses follow up research, and acknowledges how this research and its results have contributed to the fields of conflict resolution and organizational behavior

Hiding in Plain Sight: Elopomorph Larvae Are Important Contributors to Fish Biodiversity in a Low-Latitude Oceanic Ecosystem

    Get PDF
Leptocephalus larvae of elopomorph fishes are a cryptic component of fish diversity in nearshore and oceanic habitats. However, identifying those leptocephali can be important in illuminating species richness in a region. Since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, sampling of offshore fishes in the epi-, meso-, and upper bathypelagic depth strata of the northern Gulf of Mexico resulted in 8989 identifiable specimens of leptocephalus larvae or transforming juveniles, in 118 taxa representing 83 recognized and established species and an additional 35 distinctive leptocephalus morphotypes not yet linked to a known described species. Leptocephali account for ∼13% of the total species richness of fishes collected in the offshore region. A new morphotype of Muraenidae leptocephalus is also described. We compare this study with other leptocephalus diversity studies in the western Atlantic

Effects of a high daily dose of soy isoflavones on DNA damage, apoptosis, and estrogenic outcomes in healthy postmenopausal women: a phase I clinical trial

    Get PDF
A Phase I double blinded clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of a high oral dose of soy isoflavones administered daily for 84 days to healthy, postmenopausal women. Principal outcome measures included DNA damage, apoptosis and changes indicative of estrogenic stimulation

Brief Report: Correlates of Quality of Life-related Outcomes in Breast Cancer Patients Participating in the Pathfinders Pilot Study

    Get PDF
In a pilot study, participation in the Pathfinders program was associated with reductions in distress and despair and improvements in quality of life (QOL) among advanced breast cancer patients. This paper explores the relationship between psychosocial resources invoked through the Pathfinders intervention and outcomes

Phase 2 pilot study of Pathfinders: a psychosocial intervention for cancer patients

    Get PDF
Pathfinders is a multi-faceted psychosocial care program for cancer patients; it was developed in community oncology and adapted to the academic oncology setting. This prospective, single-arm, phase 2 pilot study examined the acceptability and feasibility of Pathfinders for women with metastatic breast cancer

A Pilot Study of IL-2RΞ± Blockade during Lymphopenia Depletes Regulatory T-cells and Correlates with Enhanced Immunity in Patients with Glioblastoma

    Get PDF
Preclinical studies in mice have demonstrated that the prophylactic depletion of immunosuppressive regulatory T-cells (T(Regs)) through targeting the high affinity interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor (IL-2RΞ±/CD25) can enhance anti-tumor immunotherapy. However, therapeutic approaches are complicated by the inadvertent inhibition of IL-2RΞ± expressing anti-tumor effector T-cells.To determine if changes in the cytokine milieu during lymphopenia may engender differential signaling requirements that would enable unarmed anti-IL-2RΞ± monoclonal antibody (MAbs) to selectively deplete T(Regs) while permitting vaccine-stimulated immune responses.A randomized placebo-controlled pilot study was undertaken to examine the ability of the anti-IL-2RΞ± MAb daclizumab, given at the time of epidermal growth factor receptor variant III (EGFRvIII) targeted peptide vaccination, to safely and selectively deplete T(Regs) in patients with glioblastoma (GBM) treated with lymphodepleting temozolomide (TMZ).Daclizumab treatment (n = 3) was well-tolerated with no symptoms of autoimmune toxicity and resulted in a significant reduction in the frequency of circulating CD4+Foxp3+ TRegs in comparison to saline controls (n = 3)( p = 0.0464). A significant (p<0.0001) inverse correlation between the frequency of TRegs and the level of EGFRvIII specific humoral responses suggests the depletion of TRegs may be linked to increased vaccine-stimulated humoral immunity. These data suggest this approach deserves further study.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00626015
