    Targeted Advertising and Voter Turnout: An Experimental Study of the 2000 Presidential Election

    Scholars disagree whether negative advertising demobilizes or stimulates the electorate. We use an experiment with over 10,200 eligible voters to evaluate the two leading hypotheses of negative political advertising. We extend the analysis to examine whether advertising differentially impacts the turnout of voter subpopulations depending on the advertisement痴 message. In the short term, we find no evidence that exposure to negative advertisements decreases turnout and little that suggests it increases turnout. Any effect appears to depend upon the message of the advertisement and the characteristics of the viewer. In the long term, we find little evidence that the information contained in the treatment groups・advertisements is sufficient to systematically alter turnout.

    Ketamine for Refractory Headache: A Retrospective Analysis.

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The burden of chronic headache disorders in the United States is substantial. Some patients are treatment refractory. Ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist, provides potent analgesia in subanesthetic doses in chronic pain, and limited data suggest it may alleviate headache in some patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 61 patients admitted over 3 years for 5 days of intravenous therapy that included continuous ketamine to determine responder rate and patient and ketamine infusion characteristics. Pain ratings at 2 follow-up visits were recorded. An immediate responder was a patient with decrease of 2 points or greater in the numerical rating scale (0-10) from start to final pain in the hospital. Sustained response at office visits 1 and 2 was determined based on maintaining the 2-point improvement at those visits. Patients were assessed daily for pain and adverse events (AEs). RESULTS: Forty-eight (77%) of the 61 patients were immediate responders. There were no differences regarding demographics, opioid use, or fibromyalgia between immediate responders and nonresponders. Maximum improvement occurred 4.56 days (mean) into treatment. Sustained response occurred in 40% of patients at visit 1 (mean, 38.1 days) and 39% of patients at visit 2 (mean, 101.3 days). The mean maximum ketamine rate was 65.2 ± 2.8 mg/h (0.76 mg/kg per hour). Ketamine rates did not differ between groups. Adverse events occurred equally in responders and nonresponders and were mild. CONCLUSIONS: Ketamine was associated with short-term analgesia in many refractory headache patients with tolerable adverse events. A prospective study is warranted to confirm this and elucidate responder characteristics

    A novel preoperative model to predict 90-day surgical mortality in patients considered for renal cell carcinoma surgery

    Introduction Surgical benefits for renal cell carcinoma must be weighed against competing causes of mortality, especially in the elderly patient population. We used a large cancer registry to evaluate the impact of patient and cancer-specific factors on 90-day mortality (90DM). A nomogram to predict the odds of short-term mortality was created. Materials and Methods The National Cancer Database was queried to identify all patients with clinically localized, nonmetastatic disease treated with partial or radical nephrectomy. Using a random sample of 60%, multiple logistic regression with 90DM outcomes were performed to identify preoperative variables associated with mortality. Variables included age, sex, race, co-morbidity score, tumor size, and presence of a thrombus. A nomogram was created and tested on the remaining 40% of patients to predict 90DM. Results 183,407 patients met inclusion criteria. Overall 90DM for the cohort was 1.9%. All preoperative variables significantly influenced the risk of 90DM. Patient age was by far the strongest predictor. Nomogram scores ranged from 0 to 12. Compared to patients with 0 to 1 points, those with 2 to 3 (odds ratio [OR] 2.89, 2.42–3.46; P 6 (OR 12.86, 10.83–15.27; P 80 years of age alone placed patients into the highest risk of surgical mortality. Conclusions Management of localized kidney cancer must consider competing causes of mortality, especially in elderly patients with multiple co-morbidities.     Removing the entropy from the definition of entropy: clarifying the relationship between evolution, entropy, and the second law of thermodynamics

    Abstract Misinterpretations of entropy and conflation with additional misunderstandings of the second law of thermodynamics are ubiquitous among scientists and non-scientists alike and have been used by creationists as the basis of unfounded arguments against evolutionary theory. Entropy is not disorder or chaos or complexity or progress towards those states. Entropy is a metric, a measure of the number of different ways that a set of objects can be arranged. Herein, we review the history of the concept of entropy from its conception by Clausius in 1867 to its more recent application to macroevolutionary theory. We provide teachable examples of (correctly defined) entropy that are appropriate for high school or introductory college level courses in biology and evolution. Finally, we discuss the association of these traditionally physics-related concepts to evolution. Clarification of the interactions between entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, and evolution has the potential for immediate benefit to both students and teachers

    Presented here is the editio princeps of a new fragment of the late-5th-century b.c. Athenian calendar of sacrifices. The fragment, Agora 17577, was discovered during excavations conducted in the Athenian Agora by the American School of Classical Studies. Inscribed on both faces (Face A: 403-399 b.c., Face B: 410-404 b.c.), it is associated with, but does not join, the group of fragments of Athenian legal inscriptions often referred to as the Law Code of Nikomachos. The text provides important additional evidence for the form of the calendar and the manner of its publication, and casts new light on broader issues of Athenian cult and topography
