    Decomposition of Optical Flow on the Sphere

    We propose a number of variational regularisation methods for the estimation and decomposition of motion fields on the 22-sphere. While motion estimation is based on the optical flow equation, the presented decomposition models are motivated by recent trends in image analysis. In particular we treat u+vu+v decomposition as well as hierarchical decomposition. Helmholtz decomposition of motion fields is obtained as a natural by-product of the chosen numerical method based on vector spherical harmonics. All models are tested on time-lapse microscopy data depicting fluorescently labelled endodermal cells of a zebrafish embryo.Comment: The final publication is available at link.springer.co

    The Interplay between Child Maltreatment and Stressful Life Events during Adulthood and Cardiovascular Problems—A Representative Study

    Psychological stress is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. While the relevance of early life stress, such as that which is due to child maltreatment (CM), is well known to impact individual stress responses in the long-term, and data on the interplay between CM and stressful events in adulthood on cardiovascular health are sparse. Here, we aimed to assess how stressful life events in adulthood are associated with cardiovascular health infarction in later life and whether this association is independent of CM. In a cross-sectional design, a probability sample of the German population above the age of 14 was drawn using different sampling steps. The final sample included 2510 persons (53.3% women, mean age: 48.4 years). Participants were asked about sociodemographic factors, adult life events, CM, and health conditions in adulthood. Results indicate that the number of experienced adverse life events in adulthood is associated with significantly increased odds for obesity (Odds Ration (OR)women = 1.6 [1.3; 2.0], ORmen = 1.4 [1.1; 1.9]), diabetes (ORwomen = 1.5 [1.1; 2.1], ORmen = 1.5 [1.1; 2.3]) and myocardial infarction (ORwomen = 2.1 [1.0; 4.3], ORmen = 1.8 [1.1; 2.8]). This association is not moderated by the experience of CM, which is associated with cardiovascular problems independently. Taken together, adult stressful life events and CM are significantly and independently associated with cardiovascular health in men and women in the German population in a dose-dependent manner. General practitioners, cardiologists and health policy-makers should be aware of this association between psychosocial stressors during childhood and adulthood and cardiovascular health

    Cesium and Strontium Contamination of Nuclear Plant Stainless Steel : Implications for Decommissioning and Waste Minimization

    Stainless steels can become contaminated with radionuclides at nuclear sites. Their disposal as radioactive waste would be costly. If the nature of steel contamination could be understood, effective decontamination strategies could be designed and implemented during nuclear site decommissioning in an effort to release the steels from regulatory control. Here, batch uptake experiments have been used to understand Sr and Cs (fission product radionuclides) uptake onto AISI Type 304 stainless steel under conditions representative of spent nuclear fuel storage (alkaline ponds) and PUREX nuclear fuel reprocessing (HNO3). Solution (ICP-MS) and surface measurements (GD-OES depth profiling, TOF-SIMS, and XPS) and kinetic modeling of Sr and Cs removal from solution were used to characterize their uptake onto the steel and define the chemical composition and structure of the passive layer formed on the steel surfaces. Under passivating conditions (when the steel was exposed to solutions representative of alkaline ponds and 3 and 6 M HNO3), Sr and Cs were maintained at the steel surface by sorption/selective incorporation into the Cr-rich passive film. In 12 M HNO3, corrosion and severe intergranular attack led to Sr diffusion into the passive layer and steel bulk. In HNO3, Sr and Cs accumulation was also commensurate with corrosion product (Fe and Cr) readsorption, and in the 12 M HNO3 system, XPS documented the presence of Sr and Cs chromates.Peer reviewe

    Combined electronic excitation and knock-on damage in monolayer MoS2

    Electron irradiation-induced damage is often the limiting factor in imaging materials prone to ionization or electronic excitations due to inelastic electron scattering. Quantifying the related processes at the atomic scale has only become possible with the advent of aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopes and two-dimensional materials that allow imaging each lattice atom. While it has been shown for graphene that pure knock-on damage arising from elastic scattering is sufficient to describe the observed damage, the situation is more complicated with two-dimensional semiconducting materials such as MoS2. Here, we measure the displacement cross section for sulfur atoms in MoS2 with primary beam energies between 55 and 90 keV, and correlate the results with existing measurements and theoretical models. Our experimental data suggests that the displacement process can occur from the ground state, or with single or multiple excitations, all caused by the same impinging electron. The results bring light to reports in the recent literature, and add necessary experimental data for a comprehensive description of electron irradiation damage in a two-dimensional semiconducting material. Specifically, the results agree with a combined inelastic and elastic damage mechanism at intermediate energies, in addition to a pure elastic mechanism that dominates above 80 keV. When the inelastic contribution is assumed to arise through impact ionization, the associated excitation lifetime is on the order of picoseconds, on par with expected excitation lifetimes in MoS2, whereas it drops to some tens of femtoseconds when direct valence excitation is considered.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Genetic-Algorithm-based Light Curve Optimization Applied to Observations of the W UMa star BH Cas

    I have developed a procedure utilizing a Genetic-Algorithm-based optimization scheme to fit the observed light curves of an eclipsing binary star with a model produced by the Wilson-Devinney code. The principal advantages of this approach are the global search capability and the objectivity of the final result. Although this method can be more efficient than some other comparably global search techniques, the computational requirements of the code are still considerable. I have applied this fitting procedure to my observations of the W UMa type eclipsing binary BH Cassiopeiae. An analysis of V-band CCD data obtained in 1994/95 from Steward Observatory and U- and B-band photoelectric data obtained in 1996 from McDonald Observatory provided three complete light curves to constrain the fit. In addition, radial velocity curves obtained in 1997 from McDonald Observatory provided a direct measurement of the system mass ratio to restrict the search. The results of the GA-based fit are in excellent agreement with the final orbital solution obtained with the standard differential corrections procedure in the Wilson-Devinney code.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, uses emulateapj.st

    D-brane superpotentials and RG flows on the quintic

    The behaviour of D2-branes on the quintic under complex structure deformations is analysed by combining Landau-Ginzburg techniques with methods from conformal field theory.     Static and dynamic 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT for the detection of malignant transformation of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasia of the pancreas.

    Purpose: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) may arise from intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) with malignant transformation, but a significant portion of IPMN remains to show benign behavior. Therefore, it is important to differentiate between benign IPMN and IPMN lesions undergoing malignant transformation. However, non-operative differentiation by ultrasound, CT, MRI and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) is still unsatisfactory. Here, we assessed the clinical feasibility of additional assessment of malignancy by positron emission tomography using 68Gallium-labeled Fibroblast Activation Protein Inhibitors (68Ga-FAPI-PET) in 25 patients with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - or computed tomography (CT) - proven cystic pancreatic lesions. Methods: 25 patients with cystic pancreatic lesions who were followed up in the European Pancreas Center of Heidelberg University hospital and who were led to surgical resection or fine needle aspiration (FNA) due to suspicious clinical, laboratory chemistry or radiological findings were examined by static (all patients) and dynamic (20 patients) 68Ga-FAPI-PET. Cystic pancreatic lesions were delineated and maximum and mean standardized uptake values (SUVmax / SUVmean) were determined. Time activity curves and dynamic parameters (time to peak, K1, k2, K3, k4) were extracted from dynamic PET data. Receiver operating curves (ROC) of static and dynamic PET parameters were calculated. Results: 11 of the patients suffered from menacing IPMN (high grade IPMN with (6 cases) or without (5 cases) progression into PDAC) and 11 from low grade IPMN, 3 patients from other benign entities. Menacing IMPN showed significantly elevated 68Ga-FAPI uptake compared to low grade IPMN and other benign cystic lesions. In dynamic imaging, menacing IPMN showed increasing time activity curves (TAC) followed by slow decrease afterwards, TAC of low grade IPMN showed an immediate peak followed by rapid decrease for about 10 minutes and slower decrease for the rest of the time. ROC curves showed high sensitivity and specificity (area under the curve (AUC) greater than 80%) of static and dynamic PET parameters for the differentiation of IPMN subtypes. Conclusion: 68Ga-FAPI-PET is a helpful new tool for the differentiation of menacing and low grade IPMN and shows the potential to avoid unnecessary surgery for non-malignant pancreatic IPMN
