    Did the Bundesbank Follow a Taylor Rule? An Analysis Based on Real-Time Data

    Using a real-time data set for German GDP over the period from 1973 to 1998 we calculate various measures of real-time output gaps and use these to calibrate and estimate Taylor-type reaction functions for the Bundesbank. Most of the reaction functions we find fit the Bundesbank´s actual policy, as represented by the short-run interest rate, quite well. In contrast to previous findings based on ex post revised data for the output gap, we find the reaction coefficients to resemble quite closely those originally proposed by Taylor for some of our real-time measures of the output gap. Broad monetary aggregates such as M3, in contrast, only played a small role for the Bundesbank´s interest rate decisions. Given the good record of the Bundesbank in fighting inflation, the results give support for the use of the Taylor rule for monetary policy.German real-time data; output gap; monetary policy rules

    Improved ontology for eukaryotic single-exon coding sequences in biological databases

    Indexación: Scopus.Efficient extraction of knowledge from biological data requires the development of structured vocabularies to unambiguously define biological terms. This paper proposes descriptions and definitions to disambiguate the term 'single-exon gene'. Eukaryotic Single-Exon Genes (SEGs) have been defined as genes that do not have introns in their protein coding sequences. They have been studied not only to determine their origin and evolution but also because their expression has been linked to several types of human cancer and neurological/developmental disorders and many exhibit tissue-specific transcription. Unfortunately, the term 'SEGs' is rife with ambiguity, leading to biological misinterpretations. In the classic definition, no distinction is made between SEGs that harbor introns in their untranslated regions (UTRs) versus those without. This distinction is important to make because the presence of introns in UTRs affects transcriptional regulation and post-transcriptional processing of the mRNA. In addition, recent whole-transcriptome shotgun sequencing has led to the discovery of many examples of single-exon mRNAs that arise from alternative splicing of multi-exon genes, these single-exon isoforms are being confused with SEGs despite their clearly different origin. The increasing expansion of RNA-seq datasets makes it imperative to distinguish the different SEG types before annotation errors become indelibly propagated in biological databases. This paper develops a structured vocabulary for their disambiguation, allowing a major reassessment of their evolutionary trajectories, regulation, RNA processing and transport, and provides the opportunity to improve the detection of gene associations with disorders including cancers, neurological and developmental diseases. © The Author(s) 2018.     The fluid dynamics video that is presented here outlines recent advances in the simulation of multiphase cellular blood flow through the direct numerical simulations of deformable red blood cells (RBCs) demonstrated through several numerical experiments.     A generalization of Clausen's identity

    The paper aims to generalize Clausen's identity to the square of any Gauss hypergeometric function. Accordingly, solutions of the related 3rd order linear differential equation are found in terms of certain bivariate series that can reduce to 3F2 series similar to those in Clausen's identity. The general contiguous variation of Clausen's identity is found. The related Chaundy's identity is generalized without any restriction on the parameters of Gauss hypergeometric function. The special case of dihedral Gauss hypergeometric functions is underscored

    Fostering acceptance of disabled persons by appreciating individual differences

    Although the federal law, Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (Public Law 94-142), requires school districts to provide a free, appropriate, and public education to all children with disabilities between the ages of three and 21, studies have indicated a need for programs to develop more positive and accepting attitudes toward the handicapped. This can be accomplished by providing nondisabled children structured experiences with disabled children at an early age when their perceptions of individual differences are being formed. This article discusses the educational experiences of Joey, a fifth grade student diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Joey is confined to a motorized wheelchair and needs assistance for various personal as well as classroom tasks. The article provides examples of how Joey\u27s presence in a classroom of nondisabled students fostered greater understanding and acceptance of individual differences in all students
