The milled Mg-SiC nanocomposite powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser particle size analysis (PSA) to study morphological evolutions. Furthermore, XRD, TEM, EDAX and SEM analyses were performed to investigate the microstructure of the magnesium matrix and distribution of SiC-reinforcement. It was shown that with addition of and increase in SiC nanoparticle content, finer particles with narrower size distribution are obtained after mechanical milling. The morphology of these particles also became more equiaxed at shorter milling times. The microstructural observation revealed that the milling process ensured uniform distribution of SiC nanoparticles in the magnesium matrix even with a high volume fraction, up to 10 vol%

The authors developed a coating concept based on amorphous Si/C/N coatings, with promising high temperature properties. Due to a graded coating design, the adhesion, the coating hardness as well as the coefficient of friction were optimized. The coatings showed excellent high temperature stability against chemical decomposition, structural changes and surface oxidation up to 1 350 °C. To allow the deposition of coatings with a certain chemical composition, a numerical relationship between the composition of the coatings and the deposition parameters was established

Synchrony Dynamics During Initiation, Failure, and Rescue of the Segmentation Clock

The “segmentation clock” is thought to coordinate sequential segmentation of the body axis in vertebrate embryos. This clock comprises a multicellular genetic network of synchronized oscillators, coupled by intercellular Delta-Notch signaling. How this synchrony is established and how its loss determines the position of segmentation defects in Delta and Notch mutants are unknown. We analyzed the clock's synchrony dynamics by varying strength and timing of Notch coupling in zebra-fish embryos with techniques for quantitative perturbation of gene function. We developed a physical theory based on coupled phase oscillators explaining the observed onset and rescue of segmentation defects, the clock's robustness against developmental noise, and a critical point beyond which synchrony decays. We conclude that synchrony among these genetic oscillators can be established by simultaneous initiation and self-organization and that the segmentation defect position is determined by the difference between coupling strength and noise

Cyclic deformation behavior of Mg–SiC nanocomposites on the macroscale and nanoscale

Metal‐ceramic nanocomposites are promising candidates for applications necessitating light weight and excellent fatigue resistance. We produced Mg–SiC nanocomposites from mechanically milled powders, yielding a homogeneous nanocrystalline structure and excellent quasistatic strength values. Little is known, however, about the fatigue behavior of such composites. Here, we used load increase tests on the macroscale to yield estimation values of the fatigue endurance limit. Fatigue strength increased significantly for the materials processed by the powder metallurgical route. We further investigated the cyclic deformation behavior under stress‐controlled conditions on the macroscale and nanoscale. Cyclic nanoindentation showed that indentation depth and cyclic plastic deformation decreased with increasing reinforcement content, hinting to a higher cyclic strength and corroborating the results from the macroscopic load increase tests. Our results therefore show that cyclic nanoindentation reliably determines the plastic deformation behavior of Mg nanocomposites offering the possibility of fast material analysis.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100001659Peer Reviewe

Public Attitudes towards Prevention of Obesity

OBJECTIVE: To investigate obesity prevention support in the German general public and to assess determinants of general prevention support as well as support of specific prevention measures. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of a telephone based representative German study (3,003 subjects (52.8% women, mean age 51.9, s.d.  = 18.0, range 18-97 years). Likert scale-based questions on general prevention support and support of specific measures were used. Furthermore willingness to take part in preventive programs and willingness to pay were assessed. Stigmatizing attitudes were assessed with the Fat Phobia Scale (FPS). Causation of obesity was differentiated in three dimensions (internal, e.g. lack of exercise; external, e.g. social surroundings; and genetic factors). RESULTS: Obesity prevention was perceived as possible (98.2%), however, almost exclusively lifestyle changes were named. Participants with higher stigmatizing attitudes were less likely to believe obesity prevention is possible. The majority of participants would take part in preventive programs (59.6%) and pay at least partially themselves (86.9%). Factor analysis revealed three dimensions of preventive measures: promoting healthy eating, restrictive and financial, governmental prevention efforts. In regard to these, promoting healthy eating was the most supported measure. Higher age, female gender and external causation were associated with higher support for all three dimensions of preventive measures. Only for governmental regulation, higher age was associated with lower support. CONCLUSION: Obesity prevention support in Germany is high. Structural prevention efforts are supported by the majority of the general public in Germany. The vast majority proclaims willingness to pay themselves for programs of weight gain prevention. This could be an indication of higher perceived self-responsibility in the German system but also for risen "fear of fat" in the population due to media coverage. For Germany, the government and communities ought to be encouraged by these results to start the implementation of structural obesity prevention

Effect of Dietary Supplements with ω-3 Fatty Acids, Ascorbic Acid, and Polyphenolic Antioxidant Flavonoid on Gene Expression, Organ Failure, and Mortality in Endotoxemia-Induced Septic Rats

Sepsis syndrome develops through enhanced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Sepsis syndrome is characterized by vascular hyperpermeability, hypotension, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), and increased mortality, among others. Endotoxemia-derived sepsis is an important cause of sepsis syndrome. During endotoxemia, circulating endotoxin interacts with endothelial cells (ECs), inducing detrimental effects on endothelium function. The endotoxin induces the conversion of ECs into fibroblasts, which are characterized by a massive change in the endothelial gene-expression pattern. This downregulates the endothelial markers and upregulates fibrotic proteins, mesenchymal transcription factors, and extracellular matrix proteins, producing endothelial fibrosis. Sepsis progression is modulated by the consumption of specific nutrients, including ω-3 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, and polyphenolic antioxidant flavonoids. However, the underlying mechanism is poorly described. The notion that gene expression is modulated during inflammatory conditions by nutrient consumption has been reported. However, it is not known whether nutrient consumption modulates the fibrotic endothelial gene-expression pattern during sepsis as a mechanism to decrease vascular hyperpermeability, hypotension, MODS, and mortality. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the consumption of dietary ω-3 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, and polyphenolic antioxidant flavonoid supplements on the modulation of fibrotic endothelial gene-expression patterns during sepsis and to determine the effects on sepsis outcomes. Our results indicate that the consumption of supplements based on ω-3 fatty acids and polyphenolic antioxidant flavonoids was effective for improving endotoxemia outcomes through prophylactic ingestion and therapeutic usage. Thus, our findings indicated that specific nutrient consumption improves sepsis outcomes and should be considered in treatment
