    An anisotropic cosmological model with isotropic background radiation

    We present an exact solution of Einstein equations that describes a Bianchi type III spacetime with conformal expansion. The matter content is given by an anisotropic scalar field and two perfect fluids representing dust and isotropic radiation.     Symmetries of a class of nonlinear fourth order partial differential equations

    In this paper we study symmetry reductions of a class of nonlinear fourth order partial differential equations \be u_{tt} = \left(\kappa u + \gamma u^2\right)_{xx} + u u_{xxxx} +\mu u_{xxtt}+\alpha u_x u_{xxx} + \beta u_{xx}^2, \ee where α\alpha, ÎČ\beta, Îł\gamma, Îș\kappa and ÎŒ\mu are constants. This equation may be thought of as a fourth order analogue of a generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, about which there has been considerable recent interest. Further equation (1) is a ``Boussinesq-type'' equation which arises as a model of vibrations of an anharmonic mass-spring chain and admits both ``compacton'' and conventional solitons. A catalogue of symmetry reductions for equation (1) is obtained using the classical Lie method and the nonclassical method due to Bluman and Cole. In particular we obtain several reductions using the nonclassical method which are no} obtainable through the classical method

    Determination of optimal ultrasound planes for the initialisation of image registration during endoscopic ultrasound-guided procedures

    Purpose Navigation of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided procedures of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) system can be technically challenging due to the small fields-of-view of ultrasound and optical devices, as well as the anatomical variability and limited number of orienting landmarks during navigation. Co-registration of an EUS device and a pre-procedure 3D image can enhance the ability to navigate. However, the fidelity of this contextual information depends on the accuracy of registration. The purpose of this study was to develop and test the feasibility of a simulation-based planning method for pre-selecting patient-specific EUS-visible anatomical landmark locations to maximise the accuracy and robustness of a feature-based multimodality registration method. Methods A registration approach was adopted in which landmarks are registered to anatomical structures segmented from the pre-procedure volume. The predicted target registration errors (TREs) of EUS-CT registration were estimated using simulated visible anatomical landmarks and a Monte Carlo simulation of landmark localisation error. The optimal planes were selected based on the 90th percentile of TREs, which provide a robust and more accurate EUS-CT registration initialisation. The method was evaluated by comparing the accuracy and robustness of registrations initialised using optimised planes versus non-optimised planes using manually segmented CT images and simulated (n=9) or retrospective clinical (n=1) EUS landmarks. Results The results show a lower 90th percentile TRE when registration is initialised using the optimised planes compared with a non-optimised initialisation approach (p value <0.01). Conclusions The proposed simulation-based method to find optimised EUS planes and landmarks for EUS-guided procedures may have the potential to improve registration accuracy. Further work will investigate applying the technique in a clinical setting

    Analytic and Asymptotic Methods for Nonlinear Singularity Analysis: a Review and Extensions of Tests for the Painlev\'e Property

    The integrability (solvability via an associated single-valued linear problem) of a differential equation is closely related to the singularity structure of its solutions. In particular, there is strong evidence that all integrable equations have the Painlev\'e property, that is, all solutions are single-valued around all movable singularities. In this expository article, we review methods for analysing such singularity structure. In particular, we describe well known techniques of nonlinear regular-singular-type analysis, i.e. the Painlev\'e tests for ordinary and partial differential equations. Then we discuss methods of obtaining sufficiency conditions for the Painlev\'e property. Recently, extensions of \textit{irregular} singularity analysis to nonlinear equations have been achieved. Also, new asymptotic limits of differential equations preserving the Painlev\'e property have been found. We discuss these also.Comment: 40 pages in LaTeX2e.     Detection and modelling of contacts in explicit finite-element simulation of soft tissue biomechanics

    Realistic modelling of soft-tissue biomechanics and mechanical interactions between tissues is an important part of surgical simulation, and may become a valuable asset in surgical image-guidance. Unfortunately, it is also computationally very demanding. Explicit matrix-free FEM solvers have been shown to be a good choice for fast tissue simulation, however little work has been done on contact algorithms for such FEM solvers. This work introduces such an algorithm that is capable of handling the scenarios typically encountered in image-guidance. The responses are computed with an evolution of the Lagrange-multiplier method first used by Taylor and Flanagan in PRONTO 3D with spatio-temporal smoothing heuristics for improved stability with coarser meshes and larger time steps. For contact search, a bounding-volume hierarchy (BVH) capable of identifying self collisions, and which is optimised for the small time steps by reducing the number of bounding-volume refittings between iterations through identification of geometry areas with mostly rigid motion and negligible deformation, is introduced. Further optimisation is achieved by integrating the self-collision criterion in the BVH creation and updating algorithms. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated on a number of artificial test cases and meshes derived from medical image data

    Some discussions on functionalist housing and its economics in Romania by Lhe late 1950s and early 1960s

    This paper proposes an analysis of the Romanian architectural practices in the late 1950's and early 1960's by considering the availability of financial resources. I premise that echoes of Moscow's approaches to the built environment overlapped the Bucharest politicians' priorities, whose lack of constancy in economic decision-making exacerbated itself as the urban construction programs advanced. From the Romanian authorities' point of view, therefore, raising the mass housing profitability could save important financial resources for other investments in heavy industry, while maintaining the appearance of a social state. Similarities between Soviet and Romanian modernist building projects suggested a coherent approach to housing throughout the bloc. However, this article will show that functionalist architectural modernism -cheap and fast to erect- also proved beneficial for Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej's economic plans, which questions urban construction projects' political agendas and the professional tensions between architects and economists. Therefore, investigating the functionalist architecture opens up several lines of inquiry: to what extent Nikita Khrushchev's housing program was transferred in Romania; the tortuous policies of the Romanian state's leadership in the field of housing as well as how local bureaucratic or professional actors appropriated, interpreted and adjusted such programs; and, the economic costs of the new functionalist approach to urban dwelling. In this way, this article reads the making of functionalist mass housing programs by the late 1950s to assess the Soviets' part in building the Romanian cities. To this end, the article contributes to the recent scholarly literature on multiple modernities

    Activation of chimeric and full-length growth hormone receptors by growth hormone receptor monoclonal antibodies: A specific conformational change may be required for full-length receptor signaling

    Signal transduction by the growth hormone receptor (GHR) occurs through growth hormone (GH)-induced dimerization of two GHRs to form a trimeric complex, It is thought that dimerization alone is sufficient for signaling, since monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the extracellular domain of the GHR elicit proliferation of FDC-P1 cells transfected with a chimeric receptor comprising the extracellular domain of the GHR and the fibronectin and cytoplasmic domains of the murine granulocyte colony-stimulating factor receptor, We have screened 14 GHR mAbs for proliferative activity against characterized FDC-P1 and BaF-B03 cell lines stably expressing the full-length human, rabbit, or rat GHR, or the chimeric human GHR/granulocyte colony-stimulating factor receptor, and for transactivation of the c-fos promoter and STAT activation. With the chimeric receptor, eight mAbs were able to elicit proliferation, although there was no correlation between inhibition of hormone binding and agonist activity. In contrast, no mAbs were able to act as agonists with the full-length GHR FDC-P1 cell lines, although nine competed with GH for binding, A weak proliferative response was observed in the BaF-B03 cell lines with two of the mAbs (263 and 1C9), and the addition of anti-mouse F(ab)(2) resulted in increased signaling in the hGHR BaF-B03 cell line to a plateau of 28 +/- 4% of the GH maximum for mAb 263. These data could indicate considerable stringency in the ability of mAbs to correctly dimerize the full-length GI-IR. However, the ability of mAb 263 to stimulate a mutant hGHR altered in the F'-G' loop of domain 2 was nearly abolished, concurrent with an increased affinity of this mAb for the receptor. Since the F'-G' loop undergoes a conformational change on GH binding and is necessary for full proliferative signaling, we propose that in addition to promoting receptor dimerization, mAb 263 may induce specific changes in receptor conformation similar to GH, which are required for the biological response
