Clinical users' perspective on telemonitoring of patients with long term conditions: Understood through concepts of Giddens's structuration theory & consequence of modernity
This is the post-print version of the article - Copyright @ 2010 IOS.This study involves conducting focus group discussions with clinical users (nurses and technicians) prior to the launch of telehealth service in Nottingham, UK, to elicit their initial perceptions about the service. It describes the findings from preliminary phase of otherwise a larger longitudinal study. Using Giddens’s concepts from structuration theory and con-sequence of modernity, we were able to acknowledge trust and sense of security as two very salient aspects that govern adop-tion of new technological innovation. Unattended, these as-pects contribute to arousal of conflict and contradiction within a system. In order for successful telehealth implementa-tions in health care setting, providers of the service, need to focus on ways in which clinical users’ trust can be gained and sense of security can be promoted while using the telehealth service and technology.Funding was obained from MATCH (Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technologies Centre for Healthcare)
Identification of Coulomb blockade and macroscopic quantum tunneling by noise
The effects of Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling (MQT) and Coulomb Blockade (CB)
in Josephson junctions are of considerable significance both for the
manifestations of quantum mechanics on the macroscopic scale and potential
technological applications. These two complementary effects are shown to be
clearly distinguishable from the associated noise spectra. The current noise is
determined exactly and a rather sharp crossover between flux noise in the MQT
and charge noise in the CB regions is found as the applied voltage is changed.

Evaluation of water balance components in the Elbe river catchment simulated by the regional climate model CCLM
For investigations of feedbacks between the hydrological cycle and the climate system, we assess the performance of the regional climate model CCLM in reconstructing the water balance of the Elbe river catchment. To this end long-term mean precipitation, evapotranspiration and runoff are evaluated. Extremes (90th percentile) are also considered in the case of precipitation. The data are provided by a CCLM presentday simulation for Europe that was driven by large-scale global reanalyses. The quality of the model results is analyzed with respect to suitable reference data for the period 1970 to 1999. The principal components of the hydrological cycle and their seasonal variations were captured well. Basin accumulated, averaged daily precipitation, evapotranspiration and runoff differ by no more than 10% from observations. Larger deviations occur mainly in summer, and at specific areas
The Portrayal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Mass Print Magazines Since 1980
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to examine and describe the portrayal of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in mass print media magazines.
Design: The sample included all 37 articles found in magazines with circulation rates of greater than 1 million published in the United States and Canada from 1980 to 2005. The analysis was quantitative and qualitative and included investigation of both manifest and latent magazine story messages.
Results: Manifest analysis noted that CAM was largely represented as a treatment for a patient with a medically diagnosed illness or specific symptoms. Discussions used biomedical terms such as patient rather than consumer and disease rather than wellness. Latent analysis revealed three themes: (1) CAMs were described as good but not good enough; (2) individualism and consumerism were venerated; and (3) questions of costs were raised in the context of confusion and ambivalence

Strongly Correlated Fractional Quantum Hall Line Junctions
We have studied a clean finite-length line junction between interacting
counterpropagating single-branch fractional-quantum-Hall edge channels. Exact
solutions for low-lying excitations and transport properties are obtained when
the two edges belong to quantum Hall systems with different filling factors and
interact via the long-range Coulomb interaction. Charging effects due to the
coupling to external edge-channel leads are fully taken into account.
Conductances and power laws in the current-voltage characteristics of tunneling

Calculation of dephasing times in closed quantum dots
Dephasing of one-particle states in closed quantum dots is analyzed within
the framework of random matrix theory and Master equation. Combination of this
analysis with recent experiments on the magnetoconductance allows for the first
time to evaluate the dephasing times of closed quantum dots. These dephasing
times turn out to depend on the mean level spacing and to be significantly
enhanced as compared with the case of open dots. Moreover, the experimental
data available are consistent with the prediction that the dephasing of
one-particle states in finite closed systems disappears at low enough energies

Re-imagining the Borders of US Security after 9/11: Securitisation, Risk, and the Creation of the Department of Homeland Security
The articulation of international and transnational terrorism as a key issue in US security policy, as a result of the 9/11 attacks, has not only led to a policy rethink, it has also included a bureaucratic shift within the US, showing a re-thinking of the role of borders within US security policy. Drawing substantively on the 'securitisation' approach to security studies, the article analyses the discourse of US security in order to examine the founding of the Department of Homeland Security, noting that its mission provides a new way of conceptualising 'borders' for US national security. The securitisation of terrorism is, therefore, not only represented by marking terrorism as a security issue, it is also solidified in the organisation of security policy-making within the US state. As such, the impact of a 'war on terror' provides an important moment for analysing the re-articulation of what security is in the US, and, in theoretical terms, for reaffirming the importance of a relationship between the production of threat and the institutionalisation of threat response. © 2007 Taylor & Francis
