Fixture for environmental exposure of structural materials under compression load
A device for stressing a deformable material specimen consists of top plate and a bottom plate sandwiching a guide cylinder. The specimen is positioned on the bottom plate and attached to a load piston. Force is applied through the top plate into the guide cylinder. Once the specimen is loaded, the stress is maintained by tightening tie bolt nuts

Effects of method of loading and specimen configuration on compressive strength of graphite/epoxy composite materials
Three test schemes were examined for testing graphite/epoxy (Narmco T300/5208) composite material specimens to failure in compression, including an adaptation of the IITRI "wedge grip" compression fixture, a face-supported-compression fixture, and an end-loaded-coupon fixture. The effects of specimen size, specimen support arrangement and method of load transfer on compressive behavior of graphite/epoxy were investigated. Compressive stress strain, strength, and modulus data obtained with the three fixtures are presented with evaluations showing the effects of all test parameters, including fiber orientation. The IITRI fixture has the potential to provide good stress/strain data to failure for unidirectional and quasi-isotropic laminates. The face supported fixture was found to be the most desirable for testing + or - 45 s laminates
Rangeland biomass estimation demonstration
Because of their sensitivity to chlorophyll density, green leaf density, and leaf water density, two hand-held radiometers which have sensor bands coinciding with thematic mapper bands 3, 4, and 5 were used to calibrate green biomass to LANDSAT spectral ratios as a step towards using portable radiometers to speed up ground data acquisition. Two field reflectance panels monitored incoming radiation concurrently with sampling. Software routines were developed and used to extract data from uncorrected tapes of MSS data provided in NASA LANDSAT universal format. A LANDSAT biomass calibration curve estimated the range biomass over a four scene area and displayed this information spatially as a product in a format of use to ranchers. The regional biomass contour map is discussed
Literature survey of properties of synfuels derived from coal
A literature survey of the properties of synfuels for ground-based gas turbine applications is presented. Four major concepts for converting coal into liquid fuels are described: solvent extraction, catalytic liquefaction, pyrolysis, and indirect liquefaction. Data on full range syncrudes, various distillate cuts, and upgraded products are presented for fuels derived from various processes, including H-coal, synthoil, solvent-refined coal, donor solvent, zinc chloride hydrocracking, co-steam, and flash pyrolysis. Some typical ranges of data for coal-derived low Btu gases are also presented

Bridging the gap: rewritable electronics using real-time light-induced dielectrophoresis on lithium niobate
In the context of micro-electronics, the real-time manipulation and placement of components using optics alone promises a route towards increasingly dynamic systems, where the geometry and function of the device is not fixed at the point of fabrication. Here, we demonstrate physically reconfigurable circuitry through light-induced dielectrophoresis on lithium niobate. Using virtual electrodes, patterned by light, to trap, move, and chain individual micro-solder-beads in real-time via dielectrophoresis, we demonstrate rewritable electrical contacts which can make electrical connections between surface-bound components. The completed micro-solder-bead bridges were found to have relatively low resistances that were not solely dominated by the number of interfaces, or the number of discrete beads, in the connection. Significantly, these connections are formed without any melting/fusing of the beads, a key feature of this technique that enables reconfigurability. Requiring only a low-power (~3.5 mW) laser source to activate, and without the need for external power supply or signal generation, the all-optical simplicity of virtual-electrodes may prove significant for the future development of reconfigurable electronic systems

Blackbody radiation shift in a 43Ca+ ion optical frequency standard
Motivated by the prospect of an optical frequency standard based on 43Ca+, we
calculate the blackbody radiation (BBR) shift of the 4s_1/2-3d_5/2 clock
transition, which is a major component of the uncertainty budget. The
calculations are based on the relativistic all-order single-double method where
all single and double excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave function are included
to all orders of perturbation theory. Additional calculations are conducted for
the dominant contributions in order to evaluate some omitted high-order
corrections and estimate the uncertainties of the final results. The BBR shift
obtained for this transition is 0.38(1) Hz. The tensor polarizability of the
3d_5/2 level is also calculated and its uncertainty is evaluated as well. Our
results are compared with other calculations.Comment: 4 page
Probabilistic Quantum Control Via Indirect Measurement
The most basic scenario of quantum control involves the organized
manipulation of pure dynamical states of the system by means of unitary
transformations. Recently, Vilela Mendes and Mank'o have shown that the
conditions for controllability on the state space become less restrictive if
unitary control operations may be supplemented by projective measurement. The
present work builds on this idea, introducing the additional element of
indirect measurement to achieve a kind of remote control. The target system
that is to be remotely controlled is first entangled with another identical
system, called the control system. The control system is then subjected to
unitary transformations plus projective measurement. As anticipated by
Schrodinger, such control via entanglement is necessarily probabilistic in
nature. On the other hand, under appropriate conditions the remote-control
scenario offers the special advantages of robustness against decoherence and a
greater repertoire of unitary transformations. Simulations carried out for a
two-level system demonstrate that, with optimization of control parameters, a
substantial gain in the population of reachable states can be realized.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures; typos added, reference added, reference remove
