    A Position of Influence: Variation in Offender Identification Rates by Location in a Lineup

    Researchers have identified several threats to the validity of the use of the lineup as a test of true recognition. One concern is related to the structure of the simultaneous lineup. It is argued here that a simultaneous presentation of an array nonetheless requires the viewer to undertake sequential processing of the items in the array. This sequential pattern is unlikely to be random and therefore the position of a culprit in a lineup may have a significant effect on the accuracy of witness selection. A simulated crime (snatching of a handbag) was shown to a convenience sample of 84 undergraduates aged between 18–23 years. In 84 subsequent live lineups, the offender was placed with four foils. He was positioned on the far left (position 1) in 42 cases (50%), and in 14 cases respectively in positions 3 (centre), 4 (centre right) and 5 (extreme right). A very strong association was found between position and correct identification with position 1 placement leading to a significantly lower proportion of correct identification (7.1%) compared to position 3 (50.0%), position 4 (64.3%), and position 5 (21.4%).     Abstract The literature consistently acknowledges the protective function of social support against various negative psychological and physiological outcomes (Cohen & Wills, 1985; Dunst et al., 1986; Taylor, 2011; Uchino, 2009). Further, social support can emerge from different members that comprise an individual’s social network, such as friends, family, teachers, colleagues, and members of common interest groups. Given the important role that social support plays in health outcomes, the importance of psychometrically sound measures for assessing the construct is essential for use in research and clinical settings. However, many of the current measures of social support are outdated, are limited in their psychometric properties, and fail to include several valuable sources of support. The current study sought to address these limitations through the development and validation of a new measure of social support, the Perceived Social Support Inventory

    Complicating and clarifying disciplinary writing practices: The toggling move for building rhetorical flexibility

    Instructors across many disciplines integrate genre-based approaches into their instruction with the goal of preparing students to write effectively in academic and workplace settings. Though the instructional strategies may vary, writing instructors aim to develop students' rhetorical flexibility or the ability to utilize "semiotic resources across genres, professional practices, and disciplinary cultures" (Bhatia, 2008, p. 162). While the majority of genre research focuses on student genre analyses, this dissertation project contributes to genre studies by exploring how genre analysis activities foster students' development of genre knowledge and rhetorical awareness. In the first of three research phases, I explore how students analyze and produce academic and professional genres by examining student work, survey and interview responses, and teacher journal reflections. The students' demonstration of rhetorical decision-making prompted me to examine the way I integrated genre-based pedagogy into the classroom. In the second and third phases, I discuss the recurring pedagogical strategies that emerged from grounded analyses of two sets of classroom data. I discovered one recurring strategy, Toggling, that engages students in critical thinking by facilitating discussions that challenge the idea of templates, rules, and correctness and reveal the rhetorical complexities of disciplinary writing. By analyzing seven classroom transcripts during genre analysis activities, I discovered that Toggling emerged in three specific ways to illuminate disciplinary differences, connect students' antecedent knowledge to genre analysis and application strategies, and evaluate the rhetorical work of language. These Toggling moves offer practical pedagogical strategies for facilitating genre-learning: (1) share and invite writing experiences to facilitate active classroom engagement and prompt students to recall concepts and processes that demystify the writing process, (2) explore disciplinary variation to emphasize the rhetorical complexities of writing practices, and (3) focus on the rhetorical impact of language to support students' exploration of the relationship between text and context. The findings suggest that students' rhetorical flexibility is supported through genre, disciplinary, and rhetorical knowledge illuminated by Toggling strategies. Additionally, this study has implications for genre-based pedagogical research on building students' ability to exercise rhetorical flexibility when producing genres

    The Cholera outbreak at Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee in Oct., 1918, that I am about to describe was of great importance from a military point of view. Consequently, the author and a bacteriologist, (Capt. A. Compton, R.A.M.C., O.C. 32 Mobile Laboratory) were dispatched to the scene of the outbreak in order to investigate the conditions and, in short, to adopt any measures possible to suppress the epidemic. The matter was of considerable urgency. Tiberias lay on the direct line of communication for troops operating in the Damascus area, and it was essential that all reinforcements and food supplies pass through the town. The hilly nature of the country, the arid soil, the daily extremes of temperature at that season of the year - for the days were hot and the nights bitterly cold - the deficient and defective water supply - all these factors had a bearing upon the health of the troops and the nature of the problem.     I assist discarded collectives of objects to volunteer themselves for inclusion into the privileged legacy of flatness – assuring them they can be transformed into Painting. Reducing my interventions - often to mere arrangement - respects the possibility of this transformation while frankly retaining the objects\u27 original functional identities. Every surface of any object is a readymade painting – especially flat ones. By stacking objects and aligning their surfaces on one privileged side into a flat mega-surface, I am composing and collaging – even building – a painting. With my amateur interest in German I latch upon the double meaning of Bild to title my objects, describing my continued interest in the space between painting and sculpture. All my projects transform found objects into ambiguous objects described by Donald Judd as neither painting nor sculpture . In addition to the Bilds projects such as the Cutllages, the Kitsch Paintings, Soap Drawings, Text Tubes, and List Drawings investigate different ways to transform the found object into painting.While my work is formalist it is decidedly post-modernist in its embodiment of the qualities described by Craig Owens in The Allegorical Impulse: Toward a Theory of Postmodernism
