    Acoustic Issues in Human Spaceflight

    NASA is concerned about acute effect of sound on crew performance on International Space Station (ISS), and is developing strategies to assess and reduce acute, chronic, and delayed effects of sound. High noise levels can cause headaches, irritation, fatigue, impaired sleep, headache, and tinnitus and have resulted in an inability to hear alarms. Speech intelligibility may be more impaired for crew understanding non-native language in a noisy environment. No hearing loss occurred, but significant effects on crew performance and communication occurred. Permanent Threshold Shifts (PTS) have not been observed in the US shuttle program. Russian specification for noise in spacecraft is 60 dBA (awake) and 50 dBA (asleep) while the U.S. noise specification on ISS is NC 50 (awake) and NC 40 (asleep) with a 85 dBA hazard limit. Background noise levels of ISS modules have measured 56-69 dBA. Treadmill exercise operations measure 77 dBA. Alarms are required to be 20 dBA above ambient. Hearing protection is recommended when noise exceeds 60 dB 24 hour Leq. Countermeasures include hearing protection and design/ engineering controls. Advanced composite materials with excellent low frequency attenuation properties could be applied as a barrier protection around noisy equipment, or used on personal protective equipment worn by the crew. Hearing protection countermeasures include foam ear inserts, passive muff headsets, and active noise reduction headsets. Oto-acoustic emissions (OAE) could be used to monitor effectiveness of hearing protection countermeasures and tailor hearing protection countermeasures to individual crewmembers. Micro-gravity, vibration, toxic fumes, air quality/composition, stress, temperature, physical exertion or some combination of the above factors may have interacted with moderate long-term noise exposure to cause significant hearing loss. Longitudinal studies will need to address what co-morbidity factors, such as radiation, toxicology, microgravity effects (fluid shift), aging, are involved with hearing loss

    Screening EEG in Aircrew Selection: Clinical Aerospace Neurology Perspective

    As clinical aerospace neurologists we do not favor using screening EEG in pilot selection on unselected and otherwise asymptomatic individuals. The role of EEG in aviation screening should be as an adjunct to diagnosis, and the decision to disqualify a pilot should never be based solely on the EEG. Although a policy of using a screening EEG in an unselected population might detect an individual with a potentially increased relative risk, it would needlessly exclude many applicants who would probably never have a seizure. A diagnostic test performed on an asymptomatic individual without clinical indications, in a population with a low prevalence of disease (seizure) may be of limited or possibly detrimental value. We feel that rather than do EEGs on all candidates, a better approach would be to perform an EEG for a specific indication, such as family history of seizure, single convulsion (seizure) , history of unexplained loss of consciousness or head injury. Routine screening EEGs in unselected aviation applications are not done without clinical indication in the U.S. Air Force, Navy, or NASA. The USAF discontinued routine screening EEGs for selection in 1978, the U.S. Navy discontinued it in 1981 , and NASA discontinued it in 1995. EEG as an aeromedical screening tool in the US Navy dates back to 1939. The US Navy routinely used EEGs to screen all aeromedical personnel from 1961 to 1981. The incidence of epileptiform activity on EEG in asymptomatic flight candidates ranges from 0.11 to 2.5%. In 3 studies of asymptomatic flight candidates with epileptiform activity on EEG followed for 2 to 15 years, 1 of 31 (3.2%), 1 of 30 (3.3%), and 0 of 14 (0%) developed a seizure, for a cumulative risk of an individual with an epileptiform EEG developing a seizure of 2.67% (2 in 75). Of 28,658 student naval aviation personnel screened 31 had spikes and/or slow waves on EEG, and only 1 later developed a seizure. Of the 28,627 who had a normal EEG, 4 later developed seizures, or .0139% (4/28627). After review of the value of the EEG as a screening tool, the US Navy now uses EEG only for certain clinical indications (head injury, unexplained loss of consciousness, family history of epilepsy, and abnormal neurological exam). Currently the US Navy does not use EEG for screening for any flight applicant without a neurologic indication.     Neurovestibular Effects of Long-Duration Spaceflight: A Summary of Mir-Phase 1 Experiences

    Space motion sickness and associated neurovestibular dysfunction though not completely understood - have been relatively well clinically and operationally characterized on short-duration (1-2 week) Space Shuttle missions (Oman, et al, 1984, 1986; Thornton, et al, 1987; Reschke, et al, 1994). Between March 1995 and June 1998, seven NASA astronauts flew on the Russian Mir space station, as "Phase 1" of the joint effort to build the International Space Station, and provided NASA with invaluable experience on the operational and biomedical problems associated with flights of up to six months in duration. The goal of this paper is to provide a summary of the available information on neurovestibular dysfunction, space motion sickness, and readaptation to Earth's gravity on the NASA Mir flights, based on a set of medical questionnaire data, transcripts, and interviews which are available from the NASA-Mir Phase I program. Records were incomplete and anecdotal. All references to specific crewmembers have been removed, to respect their individual privacy. Material was excerpted from multiple sources of information relating to neurologic function, sensory illusions and motion sickness of NASA-Mir Phase I Program crewmembers. Data were compiled by epoch (in-flight vs landing/postflight) and grouped by neurovestibular topic. The information was recorded either contemporaneously during or within days after landing, or retrospectively weeks to months later. Space motion sickness symptoms are more intense and longer in duration. Sense of spatial orientation takes at least a month to become "natural and instinctive" in space station structures, but mental survey knowledge is apparently not completely developed even after 3 months in some cases. Visual reorientation illusions (VRI) are more easily induced after long exposure to weightlessness. Head movements can cause illusory spinning sensations for up to 7 days postflight. Postural and balance control does not fully recover for at least a month postflight

    Transforming Growth Factor-β Stimulates the Expression of Fibronectin by Human Keratinocytes

    abstractTransforming growth factor beta (TGF-β)is a 25-kD protein which has regulatory activity over a variety of cell types. It is distinct form epidermal growth factor (EGF) and EGF analogs, and exerts its action via a distinct receptor. Its effect on proliferation or differentiation can be positive or negative depending on the cell type and the presence of other growth factors. it also modulates the expression of cellular products. TGF-β causes fibroblasts to increase their production of the extracellular matrix components, fibronectin and collagen. human keratinocytes (HK) are known to have TGF-βreceptors. We wished to study the effect of TGF-β on the production of extracellular matrix proteins by human keratinocytes in culture.Human keratinocytes were grown in serum-free defined medium (MCDB-153) to about 70% confluence. Following a 16-h incubation in medium lacking EGF and TGF-β, cells were incubated for 12h in medium containing varying concentrations of EGF and TGF-β. Cells were then labeled with 35S-methionine for 10 h in the same conditions. Labeled proteins from the medium were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and autoradiography.TGF-β at 10 ng/ml induced a sixfold increase in the secretion of fibronectin, as well as an unidentified 50-kD protein. Thrombospondin production was also increased, but not over a generalized twofold increase in the production of all other proteins. EGF, at 10 ng/ml, caused a smaller additive effect, TGF-β may be an important stimulator of extracellular matrix production by human keratinocytes

    Comparison of Supine and Vertical Bioimpedance Measurements in Young Adults

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) methods estimate health parameters such as phase angle (PhA) and body fat percentage (%BF) from various positional and electrode configurations. PhA and %BF are known biological markers of cellular and physical health, respectively, and can be used to predict various health-related conditions and therefore require accurate assessment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of body position during BIA by investigating the difference and agreement between PhA and %BF using RJL (supine) and InBody (vertical) analyzers. Thirty-eight young adults (23.4±4.1 yrs.) volunteered and underwent body composition assessments by both analyzers. Difference and agreement in assessments of PhA and %BF between analyzers were assessed using paired samples t-tests and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (rc), respectively. RJL’s PhA (7.15±0.84°) exceeded InBody’s (6.11±0.74°), p\u3c0.001, and had poor agreement (rc =0.47). RJL’s %BF (23.0±6.8%) was similar to InBody’s (23.1±7.4%), p=0.813, and had substantial agreement (rc =0.95). Both analyzers estimated %BF similarly and may be interchangeable for this purpose, thus demonstrating no effect of body position on the estimation of %BF with these BIA devices. An individual\u27s PhA may be underestimated if measured in the vertical position and compared to supine reference values. Current reference values for PhA are based on measurements in the supine position, so until vertical reference values of PhA are available, caution is urged when interpreting PhA from vertical BIA assessments

Using the British Household Panel Survey, we can observe an individual's level of psychological well-being in the years before and after divorce. Our results show that divorcing couples reap psychological gains from the dissolution of their marriages. Men and women benefit equally. The paper also studies the effects of bereavement, of having dependant children and of remarriage. We measure well-being by using general health questionnaire and life satisfaction scores

    Gypsy endogenous retrovirus maintains potential infectivity in several species of Drosophilids

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sequences homologous to the <it>gypsy </it>retroelement from <it>Drosophila melanogaster </it>are widely distributed among drosophilids. The structure of <it>gypsy </it>includes an open reading frame resembling the retroviral gene <it>env</it>, which is responsible for the infectious properties of retroviruses.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study we report molecular and phylogeny analysis of the complete <it>env </it>gene from ten species of the <it>obscura </it>group of the genus <it>Drosophila </it>and one species from the genus <it>Scaptomyza</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results indicate that in most cases <it>env </it>sequences could produce a functional Env protein and therefore maintain the infectious capability of <it>gypsy </it>in these species.</p

    The recovery of plant community composition following passive restoration across spatial scales

    Human impacts have led to dramatic biodiversity change which can be highly scale-dependent across space and time. A primary means to manage these changes is via passive (here, the removal of disturbance) or active (management interventions) ecological restoration. The recovery of biodiversity, following the removal of disturbance, is often incomplete relative to some kind of reference target. The magnitude of recovery of ecological systems following disturbance depends on the landscape matrix and many contingent factors. Inferences about recovery after disturbance and biodiversity change depend on the temporal and spatial scales at which biodiversity is measured. We measured the recovery of biodiversity and species composition over 33 years in 17 temperate grasslands abandoned after agriculture at different points in time, collectively forming a chronosequence since abandonment from 1 to 80 years. We compare these abandoned sites with known agricultural land-use histories to never-disturbed sites as relative benchmarks. We specifically measured aspects of diversity at the local plot-scale (α-scale, 0.5 m2) and site-scale (γ-scale, 10 m2), as well as the within-site heterogeneity (β-diversity) and among-site variation in species composition (turnover and nestedness). At our α-scale, sites recovering after agricultural abandonment only had 70% of the plant species richness (and ~30% of the evenness), compared to never-ploughed sites. Within-site β-diversity recovered following agricultural abandonment to around 90% after 80 years. This effect, however, was not enough to lead to recovery at our γ-scale. Richness in recovering sites was ~65% of that in remnant never-ploughed sites. The presence of species characteristic of the never-disturbed sites increased in the recovering sites through time. Forb and legume cover declines in years since abandonment, relative to graminoid cover across sites. Synthesis. We found that, during the 80 years after agricultural abandonment, old fields did not recover to the level of biodiversity in remnant never-ploughed sites at any scale. β-diversity recovered more than α-scale or γ-scale. Plant species composition recovered, but not completely, over time, and some species groups increased their cover more than others. Patterns of ecological recovery in degraded ecosystems across space and long time-scales can inform targeted active restoration interventions and perhaps, lead to better outcomes

    A mathematical model for fibro-proliferative wound healing disorders

    The normal process of dermal wound healing fails in some cases, due to fibro-proliferative disorders such as keloid and hypertrophic scars. These types of abnormal healing may be regarded as pathologically excessive responses to wounding in terms of fibroblastic cell profiles and their inflammatory growth-factor mediators. Biologically, these conditions are poorly understood and current medical treatments are thus unreliable. In this paper, the authors apply an existing deterministic mathematical model for fibroplasia and wound contraction in adult mammalian dermis (Olsenet al., J. theor. Biol. 177, 113–128, 1995) to investigate key clinical problems concerning these healing disorders. A caricature model is proposed which retains the fundamental cellular and chemical components of the full model, in order to analyse the spatiotemporal dynamics of the initiation, progression, cessation and regression of fibro-contractive diseases in relation to normal healing. This model accounts for fibroblastic cell migration, proliferation and death and growth-factor diffusion, production by cells and tissue removal/decay. Explicit results are obtained in terms of the model processes and parameters. The rate of cellular production of the chemical is shown to be critical to the development of a stable pathological state. Further, cessation and/or regression of the disease depend on appropriate spatiotemporally varying forms for this production rate, which can be understood in terms of the bistability of the normal dermal and pathological steady states—a central property of the model, which is evident from stability and bifurcation analyses. The work predicts novel, biologically realistic and testable pathogenic and control mechanisms, the understanding of which will lead toward more effective strategies for clinical therapy of fibro-proliferative disorders
