Retirement Savings Investment Strategy: Member Choices and Performance

    Get PDF
Three crucial ingredients influence how much individuals will have to fund retirement income needs: how much they contribute to savings, how long they save for, and the performance of these savings. This paper focuses on the issue of performance, and how individuals perform when they are given the choice of making their own investment strategy for their retirement savings contributions. An empirical examination using a large sample gathered from four Australian superannuation funds is utilised and finds that on average members underperform their own funds default option both in raw returns and on a risk-adjusted basis. For trustees and regulators charged with the responsibility of looking after the interests of members an important result identifies significant differences in performance based on how members are allowed to construct their investment strategy.Retirement savings, Superannuation, Asset allocation, Investment performance Acknowledgements: The authors gratefully acknowledge the support of the four funds who supported this research. We would also like to thank Jacqui Whale for her efforts in making sense of four databases. Paul Gerrans would also like to thank Susquehanna University for the time in writing the paper.

Income Expectations Among ADC Recipients in Rapid City, South Dakota : An Application of Discriminant Analysis

    Get PDF
In the present study the question of expectations of welfare recipients, specifically income expectations, is addressed. The general population chosen for examination are women and children receiving Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) payments. This general population is examined in an attempt to determine the specific factors contributing to positive or negative income expectations. These factors cover a wide range of socio-economic considerations, such as employment, receivable income, race, age of recipients~ the number of dependent children, and many other factors. The specific problem may be stated as follows: Does an identifiable, identical set of variables exist among unmarried ADC recipients in Rapid City, South Dakota, which can serve to differentiate between recipients with positive and negative income expectations? The specific problem statement may be clarified by stating that the intent of the research is to identify a common set of influences shared by each recipient which either contribute to positive or negative income expectations. The present research effort has three major objectives. They are: (1) To estimate whether or not the hypothesized set of underlying variables serves as a basis for discriminating between groups with differing income expectations. (2) To test the statistical significance of differences between groups with differing income expectations, based on a linear combination of the hypothesized set of variables. (3) To assess the relative contribution of each variable to separating groups with differing income expectations

Brown Tree Snakes Methods and Approaches for Control

    Get PDF
This chapter summarizes the existing and emerging tools and strategies for the control of the invasive brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis, or BTS) on Guam and the prevention of its accidental transport to, and subsequent establishment on, other snake-free Pacific islands. The brown tree snake has long served as an example of the ecological and economic damages that can be wrought by a single generalist vertebrate predator upon introduction to ecosystems that evolved in isolation and without native predators (Fritts and Rodda 1998; Wiles et al. 2003; Rodda and Savidge 2007). Our attempt to summarize the state of the art for control technology development and use is not intended to be an exhaustive survey of all the brown tree snake literature. Rather, it is intended to introduce the reader to the main concepts, methods, and strategic management uses of the tools in an effort to control brown tree snakes on the island landscape and interdict their passage at ports. Significant practical advances for brown tree snake control have been made since the first comprehensive summaries were published by Rodda et al. (1999e), and there is great promise for future refinements and broader implementation for control efforts on an islandwide scale
