    Pulmonary vasoconstrictor action of KCNQ potassium channel blockers

    KCNQ channels have been widely studied in the nervous system, heart and inner ear, where they have important physiological functions. Recent reports indicate that KCNQ channels may also be expressed in portal vein where they are suggested to influence spontaneous contractile activity. The biophysical properties of K+ currents mediated by KCNQ channels resemble a current underlying the resting K+ conductance and resting potential of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells. We therefore investigated a possible role of KCNQ channels in regulating the function of pulmonary arteries by determining the ability of the selective KCNQ channel blockers, linopirdine and XE991, to promote pulmonary vasoconstriction. Linopirdine and XE991 both contracted rat and mouse pulmonary arteries but had little effect on mesenteric arteries. In each case the maximum contraction was almost as large as the response to 50 mM K+. Linopirdine had an EC50 of around 1 μM and XE991 was almost 10-fold more potent. Neither removal of the endothelium nor exposure to phentolamine or α,β-methylene ATP, to block α1-adrenoceptors or P2X receptors, respectively, affected the contraction.     What explains the uneven take-up of ISO 14001 at the global level?: a panel-data analysis

    Since its release in the mid-1990s, close to 37 000 facilities have been certified to ISO 14001, the international voluntary standard for environmental management systems. Yet, despite claims that the standard can be readily adapted to very different corporate and geographic settings, its take-up has been highly geographically variable. This paper contributes to a growing body of work concerned with explaining the uneven diffusion of ISO 14001 at the global level. Drawing from the existing theoretical and empirical literature we develop a series of hypotheses about how various economic, market, and regulatory factors influence the national count of ISO 14001 certifications. These hypotheses are then tested using econometric estimation techniques with data for a panel of 142 developed and developing countries. We find that per capita ISO 14001 counts are positively correlated with income per capita, stock of foreign direct investment, exports of goods and services to Europe and Japan, and pressure from civil society. Conversely, productivity and levels of state intervention are negatively correlated. The paper finishes by offering a number of recommendations to policymakers concerned with accelerating the diffusion of voluntary environmental standards

    A crack in the facade? Situating Singapore in global flows of electronic waste

    Singapore is alleged to be a key node in global flows of e‐waste prohibited under the Basel Convention. We combine a close reading of the Convention and related documents with findings from nonparticipant observation of and interviews with Singapore‐based traders of discarded electronics. The case offers both important conceptual and empirical findings for future studies of territory in market‐making activity. Conceptually, our research suggests that it may be analytically useful in such studies to conceptualize territory without presupposing that it is generated as a result of separate domains or logics such as ‘the political’ or ‘the economic’. Empirically, we find that the regulatory framework of the Convention, combined with the action of traders based in Singapore, generates a territorialization of the city‐state such that it operates as a crack in the regulatory edifice of the Convention, even as Singapore lawfully fulfils its obligations to it. Moreover, allegations premised on the role of Singapore as a facilitator of global e‐waste dumping misrepresent its crucial role as a conduit of electronic equipment for the significant reuse markets elsewhere in Southeast Asia and beyond. The case indicates that the allegations against Singapore hinge on the city‐state being territorialized as a ‘developing country’

    Nucleation in Systems with Elastic Forces

    Systems with long-range interactions when quenced into a metastable state near the pseudo-spinodal exhibit nucleation processes that are quite different from the classical nucleation seen near the coexistence curve. In systems with long-range elastic forces the description of the nucleation process can be quite subtle due to the presence of bulk/interface elastic compatibility constraints. We analyze the nucleation process in a simple 2d model with elastic forces and show that the nucleation process generates critical droplets with a different structure than the stable phase. This has implications for nucleation in many crystal-crystal transitions and the structure of the final state

    Martensitic transition and magnetoresistance in a Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy. Influence of aging

    We have studied the effect of ageing within the miscibility gap on the electric, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a non-stoichiometric Heusler Cu-Al-Mn shape-memory alloy, which undergoes a martensitic transition from a bccbcc-based (β\beta-phase) towards a close-packed structure (MM-phase). Negative magnetoresistance which shows an almost linear dependence on the square of magnetization with different slopes in the MM- and β\beta-phases, was observed. This magnetoresistive effect has been associated with the existence of Mn-rich clusters with the Cu2_2AlMn-structure. The effect of an applied magnetic field on the martensitic transition has also been studied. The entropy change between the β\beta- and MM-phases shows negligible dependence on the magnetic field but it decreases significantly with annealing time within the miscibility gap. Such a decrease is due to the increasing amount of Cu2_2MnAl-rich domains that do not transform martensitically.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PR

    Hysteresis, Avalanches, and Disorder Induced Critical Scaling: A Renormalization Group Approach

    We study the zero temperature random field Ising model as a model for noise and avalanches in hysteretic systems. Tuning the amount of disorder in the system, we find an ordinary critical point with avalanches on all length scales. Using a mapping to the pure Ising model, we Borel sum the 6ϵ6-\epsilon expansion to O(ϵ5)O(\epsilon^5) for the correlation length exponent. We sketch a new method for directly calculating avalanche exponents, which we perform to O(ϵ)O(\epsilon). Numerical exponents in 3, 4, and 5 dimensions are in good agreement with the analytical predictions.Comment: 134 pages in REVTEX, plus 21 figures.     Optical binding of particles with or without the presence of a flat dielectric surface

    Optical fields can induce forces between microscopic objects, thus giving rise to new structures of matter. We study theoretically these optical forces between two spheres, either isolated in water, or in presence of a flat dielectric surface. We observe different behavior in the binding force between particles at large and at small distances (in comparison with the wavelength) from each other. This is due to the great contribution of evanescent waves at short distances. We analyze how the optical binding depends of the size of the particles, the material composing them, the wavelength and, above all, on the polarization of the incident beam. We also show that depending on the polarization, the force between small particles at small distances changes its sign. Finally, the presence of a substrate surface is analyzed showing that it only slightly changes the magnitudes of the forces, but not their qualitative nature, except when one employs total internal reflection, case in which the particles are induced to move together along the surface.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, and 1 tabl

    Determination of Inflationary Observables by Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Experiments

    Inflation produces nearly Harrison-Zel'dovich scalar and tensor perturbation spectra which lead to anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The amplitudes and shapes of these spectra can be parametrized by QS2Q_S^2, rQT2/QS2r\equiv Q_T^2/Q_S^2, nSn_S and nTn_T where QS2Q_S^2 and QT2Q_T^2 are the scalar and tensor contributions to the square of the CMB quadrupole and nSn_S and nTn_T are the power-lawspectral indices. Even if we restrict ourselves to information from angles greater than one third of a degree, three of these observables can be measured with some precision. The combination 1301nSQS2130^{1-n_S}Q_S^2 can be known to better than ±0.3%\pm 0.3\%. The scalar index nSn_S can be determined to better than ±0.02\pm 0.02. The ratio rr can be known to about ±0.1\pm 0.1 for nS1n_S \simeq 1 and slightly better for smaller nSn_S. The precision with which nTn_T can be measured depends weakly on nSn_S and strongly on rr. For nS1n_S \simeq 1 nTn_T can be determined with a precision of about ±0.056(1.5+r)/r\pm 0.056(1.5+r)/r. A full-sky experiment with a 2020'beam using technology available today, similar to those being planned by several groups, can achieve the above precision. Good angular resolution is more important than high signal-to-noise ratio; for a given detector sensitivity and observing time a smaller beam provides significantly more information than a larger beam. The uncertainties in nSn_S and rr are roughly proportional to the beam size. We briefly discuss the effects of uncertainty in the Hubble constant, baryon density, cosmological constant and ionization history.Comment: 28 pages of uuencoded postscript with 8 included figures.
