    Excavation of an early 17th-century glassmaking site at Glasshouse, Shinrone, Co. Offaly, Ireland

    An archaeological research excavation was conducted in the area immediately surrounding an upstanding glassmaking furnace near Shinrone, Co. Offaly, Ireland. It dates to the early to mid 17th century and was built and operated by French Huguenots, probably de Hennezells (de Hennezel/Henzeys/Hensie) who had settled in this region as part of the Crown plantation of King’s County (now Co. Offaly). This furnace, which employed wood rather than coal as a fuel, is a very rare survival, with no other upstanding examples known in Ireland, Britain or the Lorraine region of France where the form probably originated

    Mapping and sequencing rat dishevelled-1: a candidate gene for cerebral ischaemic insult in a rat model of stroke

    A quantitative trait locus on chromosome 5 in the rat is linked to sensitivity to brain ischemia in the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHRSP). The genes encoding atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) that map to this location have been excluded as candidate genes. We examined dishevelled-1 (DVL-1) as a further candidate gene. DVL-1 had not yet been identified in the rat, but Anp, Bnp, and DVL-1 map to the homologous regions of the rat chromosome 5 quantitative trait locus in both mice and man. Furthermore, DVL-1 is involved in the Notch signalling system, which plays a role in the disorder cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy, the symptoms of which include ischaemic stroke. We show with radiation hybrid mapping that rat DVL-1 indeed maps to chromosome 5, where it is positioned immediately next to microsatellite marker D5Rat49. We sequenced the complete coding sequence and a large part of the intronic genomic sequence for the SHRSP strain and its reference Wistar-Kyoto strain. The DVL-1 sequence in the two strains was identical. Our results essentially exclude the DVL-1 gene as the cause for sensitivity to cerebral ischaemic insult in this rat model of strok

    Numerical predictions of turbulence-cascade interaction noise using CAA with a stochastic model

    Turbulent flow interactions with the outlet guide vanes are known to be mainly contributing to broadband noise emission of aeroengines at approach conditions. This paper presents a 3D CAA hybrid method aiming at simulating the aeroacoustic response of an annular cascade impacted by a prescribed homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow. It is based on a time-domain Euler solver coupled to a synthetic turbulence model implemented in the code by means of a suited inflow boundary condition proposed by Tam. The fluctuating pressure over the airfoil surface provided by CAA is used as an input to a FWH integral to calculate the radiated sound field. The method is first validated against an academic CAA benchmark in the case of a harmonic gust interacting with an annular flat plate cascade. Then, simulations are applied to turbulence-cascade interactions for annular configurations, in uniform and swirling mean flows, and numerical results in terms of sound power spectra in the outlet duct are compared to semi-analytical and numerical solutions, and to an available experimen
