Spectral characteristics for a spherically confined -1/r + br^2 potential
We consider the analytical properties of the eigenspectrum generated by a
class of central potentials given by V(r) = -a/r + br^2, b>0. In particular,
scaling, monotonicity, and energy bounds are discussed. The potential is
considered both in all space, and under the condition of spherical confinement
inside an impenetrable spherical boundary of radius R. With the aid of the
asymptotic iteration method, several exact analytic results are obtained which
exhibit the parametric dependence of energy on a, b, and R, under certain
constraints. More general spectral characteristics are identified by use of a
combination of analytical properties and accurate numerical calculations of the
energies, obtained by both the generalized pseudo-spectral method, and the
asymptotic iteration method. The experimental significance of the results for
both the free and confined potential V(r) cases are discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
Arbitrary l-state solutions of the rotating Morse potential by the asymptotic iteration method
For non-zero values, we present an analytical solution of the radial
Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the rotating Morse potential using the Pekeris
approximation within the framework of the Asymptotic Iteration Method. The
bound state energy eigenvalues and corresponding wave functions are obtained
for a number of diatomic molecules and the results are compared with the
findings of the super-symmetry, the hypervirial perturbation, the
Nikiforov-Uvarov, the variational, the shifted 1/N and the modified shifted 1/N
expansion methods.Comment: 15 pages with 1 eps figure. accepted for publication in Journal of

Criterion for polynomial solutions to a class of linear differential equation of second order
We consider the differential equations y''=\lambda_0(x)y'+s_0(x)y, where
\lambda_0(x), s_0(x) are C^{\infty}-functions. We prove (i) if the differential
equation, has a polynomial solution of degree n >0, then \delta_n=\lambda_n
s_{n-1}-\lambda_{n-1}s_n=0, where \lambda_{n}=
\lambda_{n-1}^\prime+s_{n-1}+\lambda_0\lambda_{n-1}\hbox{and}\quad
s_{n}=s_{n-1}^\prime+s_0\lambda_{k-1},\quad n=1,2,.... Conversely (ii) if
\lambda_n\lambda_{n-1}\ne 0 and \delta_n=0, then the differential equation has
a polynomial solution of degree at most n. We show that the classical
differential equations of Laguerre, Hermite, Legendre, Jacobi, Chebyshev (first
and second kind), Gegenbauer, and the Hypergeometric type, etc, obey this
criterion. Further, we find the polynomial solutions for the generalized
Hermite, Laguerre, Legendre and Chebyshev differential equations.Comment: 12 page
Physical applications of second-order linear differential equations that admit polynomial solutions
Conditions are given for the second-order linear differential equation P3 y"
+ P2 y'- P1 y = 0 to have polynomial solutions, where Pn is a polynomial of
degree n. Several application of these results to Schroedinger's equation are
discussed. Conditions under which the confluent, biconfluent, and the general
Heun equation yield polynomial solutions are explicitly given. Some new classes
of exactly solvable differential equation are also discussed. The results of
this work are expressed in such way as to allow direct use, without preliminary
analysis.Comment: 13 pages, no figure
Review of Linac-Ring Type Collider Proposals
There are three possibly types of particle colliders schemes: familiar (well
known) ring-ring colliders, less familiar however sufficiently advanced linear
colliders and less familiar and less advanced linac-ring type colliders. The
aim of this paper is two-fold: to present possibly complete list of papers on
linac-ring type collider proposals and to emphasize the role of linac-ring type
machines for future HEP research.Comment: quality of figures is improved, some misprints are correcte
Two-dimensional random walk in a bounded domain
In a recent Letter Ciftci and Cakmak [EPL 87, 60003 (2009)] showed that the
two dimensional random walk in a bounded domain, where walkers which cross the
boundary return to a base curve near origin with deterministic rules, can
produce regular patterns. Our numerical calculations suggest that the
cumulative probability distribution function of the returning walkers along the
base curve is a Devil's staircase, which can be explained from the mapping of
these walks to a non-linear stochastic map. The non-trivial probability
distribution function(PDF) is a universal feature of CCRW characterized by the
fractal dimension d=1.75(0) of the PDF bounding curve.Comment: 4 pages, 7 eps figures, revtex
Energies and wave functions for a soft-core Coulomb potential
For the family of model soft Coulomb potentials represented by V(r) =
-\frac{Z}{(r^q+\beta^q)^{\frac{1}{q}}}, with the parameters
Z>0, \beta>0, q \ge 1, it is shown analytically that the potentials and
eigenvalues, E_{\nu\ell}, are monotonic in each parameter. The potential
envelope method is applied to obtain approximate analytic estimates in terms of
the known exact spectra for pure power potentials. For the case q =1, the
Asymptotic Iteration Method is used to find exact analytic results for the
eigenvalues E_{\nu\ell} and corresponding wave functions, expressed in terms of
Z and \beta. A proof is presented establishing the general concavity of the
scaled electron density near the nucleus resulting from the truncated
potentials for all q. Based on an analysis of extensive numerical calculations,
it is conjectured that the crossing between the pair of states
[(\nu,\ell),(\nu',\ell')], is given by the condition \nu'\geq (\nu+1) and \ell'
\geq (\ell+3). The significance of these results for the interaction of an
intense laser field with an atom is pointed out. Differences in the observed
level-crossing effects between the soft potentials and the hydrogen atom
confined inside an impenetrable sphere are discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, title change, minor revision
Exact solutions for vibrational levels of the Morse potential via the asymptotic iteration method
Exact solutions for vibrational levels of diatomic molecules via the Morse
potential are obtained by means of the asymptotic iteration method. It is shown
that, the numerical results for the energy eigenvalues of are all
in excellent agreement with the ones obtained before. Without any loss of
generality, other states and molecules could be treated in a similar way
Coulomb plus power-law potentials in quantum mechanics
We study the discrete spectrum of the Hamiltonian H = -Delta + V(r) for the
Coulomb plus power-law potential V(r)=-1/r+ beta sgn(q)r^q, where beta > 0, q >
-2 and q \ne 0. We show by envelope theory that the discrete eigenvalues
E_{n\ell} of H may be approximated by the semiclassical expression
E_{n\ell}(q) \approx min_{r>0}\{1/r^2-1/(mu r)+ sgn(q) beta(nu r)^q}.
Values of mu and nu are prescribed which yield upper and lower bounds.
Accurate upper bounds are also obtained by use of a trial function of the form,
psi(r)= r^{\ell+1}e^{-(xr)^{q}}. We give detailed results for
V(r) = -1/r + beta r^q, q = 0.5, 1, 2 for n=1, \ell=0,1,2, along with
comparison eigenvalues found by direct numerical methods.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Autonomy found: Estimating the local benefit from tourism in SIDS – the Case of Cape Verde
Tourism is an unusually important economic sector for the Small Island Development States (SIDS). Islands are the second most visited destinations after historic cities. The SIDS tourism is usually dependent on foreign investment and in the form of All-Inclusive (AI) system. Few studies have evaluated the economic impact of tourism on the economic development and/or poverty reduction of a SID using macro level data. And little research has used micro/firm level data to investigate the impact of tourism on the local economy of SIDS. This paper aims to evaluate the local benefits made from the development of tourism in SIDS, in particular the contribution of AI accommodation using the case of Cape Verde. It makes two main contributions: it makes the first attempt to use microeconomic data at the company level to examine the contribution of tourism in SIDS; it uses empirical data to examine the impacts of AI accommodation on the local economy. A semi-structured hotel questionnaire was applied to 13 accommodation managers and hotel owners, from small guest-houses to large 500 room All-Inclusive resorts in Sal, Boa Vista, Fogo, and Santo AntĂŁo. The results indicate that for destinations at an early stage in their development, large-scale AIs may be the most effective way to achieve the growth of tourism to the point that a critical mass is achieved
