    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     There is a number of risk issues associated with CBM/CMM operations: sealing the mine shafts; pumping the mine water; evacuating air from the mine and air ingress into the mine. Our team has investigated the details of the initial phase of the business plan and, by extrapolation of key parameters, was able to form an opinion on the larger plan. The details investigated include: the methods to calculate the volume of gas entrapped in the coal; the sealing of the mine shafts to trap the gas escape; and the process to keep the mines pumped dry by removing the underground water that drains into the mine workings

    El artículo pretende explicar de manera muy sucinta los conceptos básicos de los recursos de gas no convencional, principalmente gas en capa de carbón (CBM) y gas de lutitas (shale gas) y resumir los trabajos realizados hasta la fecha tanto de sísmica como de perforación con relación a la exploración de hidrocarburos en el territorio cubierto por el Principado de Asturias y el potencial exploratorio que presenta el mismo. La actividad de exploración de hidrocarburos ha sido escasa y muy intermitente. El Principado ocupa una superficie de unos 10.600 km2, de los que cerca de un 60% están recubiertos por materiales sedimentarios y, por tanto, susceptibles de generar y almacenar hidrocarburos. Si se comparan las labores de exploración por km2 (sísmica y sondeos) llevadas a cabo en Asturias con la realizada en algunas de las cuencas sedimentarias en España, y no digamos en Francia o Italia, las cifras son totalmente ridículas

    New Equipment for Complementary Petrophysical Characterization of Rocks for Deep Geological Storage

    The geological storage of CO2 in coal seams is an emerging option in the portfolio of mitigation actions for reduction of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. A background study focused to the selection of favorable sites for CO2 geological storage are necessary steps, and in the selection of reservoirs for CO2 sequestration a complete petrophysical characterization of the sample is necessary. To complement the classical petrophysical parameters measured on the rocks of the geological formation with potential to be used to store the injected CO2, a new equipment has been designed and constructed to simulate at a laboratory scale the inter-action between the rock and the injected CO2, at different pressure conditions simulating depths of the geological formations up to 1000 m. The design and construction of this equipment allows us to investigate known physical and chemical processes that occur between the rocks store/seal and the fluid injected into geological storage. Essays focused to study the alterability of the rock in contact with CO2 either in subcritical or supercritical state, as well as essays for CO2 injectivity on the rock can be accomplished

    New technological development and a best knowledge of the basin allow to have justified expectation to find coalbed methane reserves. Measurements of gas content in unexploited coal seams are made in order to estimate the CBM could revive the economic interest of the Asturian Central Coal Basin (ACCB). According to first estimations based on the studies accomplished, the minimum resources of coalbed methane in the whole of the Asturian Central Coal Basin are in the order of 25,000 Mm3 and the gas content of the coal seams range from 6 m3 to 14 m3/t. The introduction should briefly place the study in a broad context and define the purpose of the work and its significance

For the first time, an enantiopure fully conjugated helical foldamer having 14 phenyl rings and 13 alkynes is reported. The folded structure has four complete loops and is able to host three Ag(I) cations in their cavity with high binding constants. The complete photophysical and chiroptical (ECD, CPL and VCD) characterization of these foldamers has shown that these molecules show intense chiroptical responses with dissymmetry ratios in the range of 10−2. Theoretical modeling of these systems reveals the origin of these remarkable responses and points out a potential connection with the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect.
