    Canine dystocia in 50 UK first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices: prevalence and risk factors

    Dystocia can represent a major welfare issue for dogs of certain breeds and morphologies. First-opinion emergency-care veterinary caseloads represent a useful data resource for epidemiological research because dystocia can often result in emergency veterinary care. The study analysed a merged database of clinical records from 50 first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices participating in the VetCompass Programme. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used for risk factors analysis. There were 701 dystocia cases recorded among 18,758 entire female dogs, resulting in a dystocia prevalence of 3.7 per cent (95 per cent CI 3.5–4.0 per cent). Breeds with the highest odds of dystocia compared with crossbred bitches were French Bulldog (OR: 15.9, 95 per cent CI 9.3 to 27.2, P<0.001), Boston Terrier (OR: 12.9, 95 per cent CI 5.6 to 29.3, P<0.001), Chihuahua (OR: 10.4, 95 per cent CI 7.0 to 15.7, P<0.001) and Pug (OR: 11.3, 95 per cent CI 7.1 to 17.9, P<0.001). Bitches aged between 3.0 and 5.9 years had 3.1 (95 per cent CI 2.6 to 3.7, P<0.001) times the odds of dystocia compared with bitches aged under 3.0years. Certain breeds, including some brachycephalic and toy breeds, appeared at high risk of dystocia. Opportunities to improve this situation are discussed

    Uniform Substitution for Differential Game Logic

    This paper presents a uniform substitution calculus for differential game logic (dGL). Church's uniform substitutions substitute a term or formula for a function or predicate symbol everywhere. After generalizing them to differential game logic and allowing for the substitution of hybrid games for game symbols, uniform substitutions make it possible to only use axioms instead of axiom schemata, thereby substantially simplifying implementations. Instead of subtle schema variables and soundness-critical side conditions on the occurrence patterns of logical variables to restrict infinitely many axiom schema instances to sound ones, the resulting axiomatization adopts only a finite number of ordinary dGL formulas as axioms, which uniform substitutions instantiate soundly. This paper proves soundness and completeness of uniform substitutions for the monotone modal logic dGL. The resulting axiomatization admits a straightforward modular implementation of dGL in theorem provers

    Experimental characterization of deployable trusses and joints

    The structural dynamic properties of trusses are strongly affected by the characteristics of joints connecting the individual beam elements. Joints are particularly significant in that they are often the source of nonlinearities and energy dissipation. While the joints themselves may be physically simple, direct measurement is often necessary to obtain a mathematical description suitable for inclusion in a system model. Force state mapping is a flexible, practical test method for obtaining such a description, particularly when significant nonlinear effects are present. It involves measurement of the relationship, nonlinear or linear, between force transmitted through a joint and the relative displacement and velocity across it. An apparatus and procedure for force state mapping are described. Results are presented from tests of joints used in a lightweight, composite, deployable truss built by the Boeing Aerospace Company. The results from the joint tests are used to develop a model of a full 4-bay truss segment. The truss segment was statically and dynamically tested. The results of the truss tests are presented and compared with the analytical predictions from the model

    Discovery of narrow X-ray absorption features from the dipping low-mass X-ray binary X 1624-490 with XMM-Newton

    We report the discovery of narrow X-ray absorption features from the dipping low-mass X-ray binary X 1624-490 during an XMM-Newton observation in 2001 February. The features are identified with the K alpha absorption lines of Fe xxv and Fe xxvi and have energies of 6.72 +/- 0.03 keV and 7.00 +/- 0.02 keV and equivalent widths (EWs) of -7.5 +1.7 -6.3 eV and -16.6 +1.9 -5.9 eV, respectively. The EWs show no obvious dependence on orbital phase, except during a dip, and correspond to a column of greater than 10^17.3 Fe atom /cm2. In addition, faint absorption features tentatively identified with Ni xxvii K alpha and Fe xxvi K beta may be present. A broad emission feature at 6.58 +0.07 -0.04 keV with an EW of 78 +19 -6 eV is also evident. This is probably the 6.4 keV feature reported by earlier missions since fitting a single Gaussian to the entire Fe-K region gives an energy of 6.39 +0.03 -0.04 keV. A deep absorption feature is present during the dip with an energy consistent with Fe xxv K alpha. This is the second dipping LMXRB source from which narrow Fe absorption features have been observed. Until recently the only X-ray binaries known to exhibit narrow X-ray absorption lines were two superluminal jet sources and it had been suggested that these features are related to the jet formation mechanism. It now appears likely that ionized absorption features may be common characteristics of accreting systems with accretion disks.Comment: 6 pages. To appear in A&

    The Energy Dependence of the Aperiodic Variability for Cygnus X-1, GX 339-4, GRS 1758-258, & 1E 1740.7-2942

    Using the data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we report the different energy dependence of the variability of the four persistent hard X-ray sources in the low-hard state: Cygnus X-1, GX 339-4, GRS 1758-258 and 1E 1740.7-2942. Cygnus X-1 is found to have a flatter power density spectrum (PDS) shape at higher energies. The other three sources have energy independent PDS shapes. The energy dependence of the overall variability (the integrated rms amplitude) varies from source to source and from observation to observation. 1E~1740.7-2942, for example, has a variability generally increasing with energy while GX 339-4 has a decreasing variability. A general trend is found in the four sources that the integrated rms amplitude anti-correlates with the X-ray flux. We compare these distinct energy dependent behaviors with several emission models.     Magnetic dipole transition rates from measured lifetimes of levels of Be-like and B-like argon ions

    Journals published by the American Physical Society can be found at http://publish.aps.org/The lifetimes of the 1s(2)2s2p P-3(2) level of Ar XV and 1s(2)2s(2)2p P-2(3/2) of Ar XIV have been measured using metastable Ar14+ and Ar13+ ions produced by an electron cyclotron resonance ion source, which were subsequently separately captured into a Kingdon ion trap. The lifetime results are tau(Ar XV, 2s2p P-3(2)) = 13.4(7) ms and tau(Ar XIV,2p P-2(3/2)) = 9.12(18) ms. Transition rates derived from the measured lifetimes differ significantly from both relativistic and nonrelativistic calculations of the 2s2p P-3(1)-P-3(2) M1 transition rate of Ar XV, but are in reasonable agreement with calculations for the 2p P-2(1/2)-P-2(3/2) M1 rate of Ar XIV.
