    This report describes the data collection and requirements analysis effort of the Ground System Development Environment (GSDE) Interface Requirements study. It identifies potential problems in the interfaces among applications and processors in the heterogeneous systems that comprises the GSDE. It describes possible strategies for addressing those problems. It also identifies areas for further research and prototyping to demonstrate the capabilities and feasibility of those strategies and defines a plan for building the necessary software prototypes

    The Role of Social Media and Product Differentiation in Etsy Micro-Manufacturing Shops

    This research presents an analysis of online micro-manufacturers who sell their handmade and individually customized products by means of the Internet. Using extant literature in the areas of social media and long-tail marketing, this study develops a theoretical model of micro-manufacturing item sales success. In this model, we posit that higher average sales prices for items are associated with the dual aspects of social media proficiency and hyper-differentiation. To examine this model, we present an empirical analysis of a dataset consisting of the marketing and sales activities of 1,386 micro-manufacturers within Etsy, an online commerce platform. Results of the analysis show that micro-manufacturers who achieve greater social media recognition and those who leverage their core competencies around handmade and customized products command higher product sales prices. Therefore, our study offers insights for existing micro-manufacturers and researchers interested in examining the way that niche market micro-manufacturers achieve success online

    Critical Success Factors in Online Multi-Platform Outpost Marketing Strategies

    Companies, especially small businesses, increasingly rely on marketing activities through multiple social network sites. Social network sites provide access to large customer bases and greatly streamline the costs and technical expertise required to engage in electronic commerce. Research interest focused on the nature of small business e-commerce success has understandably increased in recent years to reflect this new aspect of digital business. Many studies in this area look at individual social network platforms like Facebook, Twitter etc. and attempt to examine the factors that correlate with marketing success. While these studies offer important insight into the challenges faced by small businesses in this area, many studies of a single platform fail to take into account the rapidly increasing variety of social network platforms available to small businesses. It is common today to see a single business participating in multiple social network \u27outposts\u27, or digital spaces within social networks from which companies engage in marketing activities. From a strategic standpoint, each outpost offers unique and valuable customer engagement opportunities. For example, traditional social networks like Facebook have huge advantages in terms of size and scope of their user-base, yet marketing strategies designed to take advantage of these characteristics may vary significantly from new image-based platforms such as Pinterest or Instagram. To succeed in such a complex environment, companies necessarily must incorporate a mix of different techniques and strategies designed to capitalize on the strengths, and offset the weaknesses, of each distinct platform. Researchers can inform marketing strategies to the benefit of many companies. Yet to date the research remains fragmented. Specifically, little research categorizes different outposts in terms of their marketing potential and characteristics, or considers the disparate factors that create successful companies in each outpost. This is the gap filled by this study. We collected data from 100 companies across a mix of four different social network outposts for nine weeks to identify the key factors that determine sales success. Our preliminary empirical analysis shows that critical success factors differ considerably based on interactions between core social network characteristics and a company\u27s product offerings, as well as other factors such as geography, company size and company reputation. Results of the study offer numerous takeaways for both companies that seek to understand the social media challenges that they face as well as social network designers looking to succeed in an increasingly competitive social network ecosphere

The requirements focus on the need for centralized configuration management of software as it is transitioned from development to formal, target based testing. This concludes the GSDE Interface Requirements study. A summary is presented of findings concerning the interface itself, possible interface and prototyping directions for further study, and results of the investigation of the Cronus distributed applications environment

    Pediatric ADHD symptom burden relates to distinct neural activity across executive function domains

    Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent childhood disorder marked by inattention and/or hyperactivity symptoms. ADHD may also relate to impaired executive function (EF), but is often studied in a single EF task per sample. The current study addresses the question of unique vs. overlapping relations in brain activity across multiple EF tasks and ADHD symptom burden. Three in-scanner tasks drawn from distinct EF domains (cognitive flexibility, working memory, and inhibition) were collected from children with and without an ADHD diagnosis (N = 63). Whole-brain activity and 11 regions of interest were correlated with parent reports of inattention and hyperactivity symptoms. Across the three EF domains, brain activity related to ADHD symptom burden, but the direction and location of these associations differed across tasks. Overall, activity in sensory and default mode network regions related to ADHD, and these relations did not consistently overlap across EF domains. We observed both distinct and overlapping patterns for inattention and hyperactivity symptoms. By studying multiple EF tasks in the same sample, we identified a heterogenous neural profile related to attention symptom burden in children. Our results inform ADHD characterization and treatment and explain some of the variable brain results related to EF and ADHD reported in the literature

    Kripke Semantics for Martin-L\"of's Extensional Type Theory

    It is well-known that simple type theory is complete with respect to non-standard set-valued models. Completeness for standard models only holds with respect to certain extended classes of models, e.g., the class of cartesian closed categories. Similarly, dependent type theory is complete for locally cartesian closed categories. However, it is usually difficult to establish the coherence of interpretations of dependent type theory, i.e., to show that the interpretations of equal expressions are indeed equal. Several classes of models have been used to remedy this problem. We contribute to this investigation by giving a semantics that is standard, coherent, and sufficiently general for completeness while remaining relatively easy to compute with. Our models interpret types of Martin-L\"of's extensional dependent type theory as sets indexed over posets or, equivalently, as fibrations over posets. This semantics can be seen as a generalization to dependent type theory of the interpretation of intuitionistic first-order logic in Kripke models. This yields a simple coherent model theory, with respect to which simple and dependent type theory are sound and complete

    Genetic Variation at the FTO Locus Influences RBL2 Gene Expression

    OBJECTIVE - Genome-wide association studies that compare the statistical association between thousands of DNA variations and a human trait have detected 958 loci across 127 different diseases and traits. However, these statistical associations only provide evidence for genomic regions likely to harbor a causal gene(s) and do not directly identify such genes. We combined gene variation and expression data in a human cohort to identify causal genes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - Global gene transcription activity was obtained for each individual in a large human cohort (n = 1,240). These quantitative transcript data were tested for correlation with genotype data generated from the same individuals to identify gene expression patterns influenced by the variants. RESULTS - Variant rs8050136 lies within intron 1 of the FTO gene on chromosome 16 and marks a locus strongly associated with type 2 diabetes and obesity and widely replicated across many populations. We report that genetic variation at this locus does not influence FTO gene expression levels (P = 0.38), but is strongly correlated with expression of RBL2 (P = 2.7 × 10-5), ~270,000 base pairs distant to FTO. CONCLUSIONS - These data suggest that variants at FTO influence RBL2 gene expression at large genetic distances. This observation underscores the complexity of human transcriptional regulation and highlights the utility of large human cohorts in which both genetic variation and global gene expression data are available to identify disease genes. Expedient identification of genes mediating the effects of genome-wide association study - identified loci will enable mechanism-of-action studies and accelerate understanding of human disease processes under genetic influence. © 2010 by the American Diabetes Association

    Self-Consistent Thermal Accretion Disk Corona Models for Compact Objects: II. Application to Cygnus X-1

    We apply our self-consistent accretion disk corona (ADC) model, with two different geometries, to the broad-band X-ray spectrum of the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1. As shown in a companion paper (Dove, Wilms, and Begelman), models where the Comptonizing medium is a slab surrounding the cold accretion disk cannot have a temperature higher than about 120 keV for optical depths greater than 0.2, resulting in spectra that are much softer than the observed 10-30 keV spectrum of Cyg X-1. In addition, the slab geometry models predict a substantial ``soft excess'' at low energies, a feature not observed for Cyg X-1, and Fe K\alpha fluorescence lines that are stronger than observed. Previous Comptonization models in the literature invoke a slab geometry with the optical depth \tau_T \gta 0.3 and the coronal temperature T_c \sim 150 keV, but they are not self-consistent. Therefore, ADC models with a slab geometry are not appropriate for explaining the X-ray spectrum of Cyg X-1. Models with a spherical corona and an exterior disk, however, predict much higher self-consistent coronal temperatures than the slab geometry models. The higher coronal temperatures are due to the lower amount of reprocessing of coronal radiation in the accretion disk, giving rise to a lower Compton cooling rate. Therefore, for the sphere+disk geometry, the predicted spectrum can be hard enough to describe the observed X-ray continuum of Cyg X-1 while predicting Fe fluorescence lines having an equivalent width of \sim 40 eV. Our best-fit parameter values for the sphere+disk geometry are \tau_T \approx 1.5 and T_c \approx 90 keV.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 10 .eps figures, uses emulateapj.sty.     Diminished Telomeric 3′ Overhangs Are Associated with Telomere Dysfunction in Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson Syndrome

    BACKGROUND:Eukaryotic chromosomes end with telomeres, which in most organisms are composed of tandem DNA repeats associated with telomeric proteins. These DNA repeats are synthesized by the enzyme telomerase, whose activity in most human tissues is tightly regulated, leading to gradual telomere shortening with cell divisions. Shortening beyond a critical length causes telomere uncapping, manifested by the activation of a DNA damage response (DDR) and consequently cell cycle arrest. Thus, telomere length limits the number of cell divisions and provides a tumor-suppressing mechanism. However, not only telomere shortening, but also damaged telomere structure, can cause telomere uncapping. Dyskeratosis Congenita (DC) and its severe form Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson Syndrome (HHS) are genetic disorders mainly characterized by telomerase deficiency, accelerated telomere shortening, impaired cell proliferation, bone marrow failure, and immunodeficiency. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We studied the telomere phenotypes in a family affected with HHS, in which the genes implicated in other cases of DC and HHS have been excluded, and telomerase expression and activity appears to be normal. Telomeres in blood leukocytes derived from the patients were severely short, but in primary fibroblasts they were normal in length. Nevertheless, a significant fraction of telomeres in these fibroblasts activated DDR, an indication of their uncapped state. In addition, the telomeric 3' overhangs are diminished in blood cells and fibroblasts derived from the patients, consistent with a defect in telomere structure common to both cell types. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:Altogether, these results suggest that the primary defect in these patients lies in the telomere structure, rather than length. We postulate that this defect hinders the access of telomerase to telomeres, thus causing accelerated telomere shortening in blood cells that rely on telomerase to replenish their telomeres. In addition, it activates the DDR and impairs cell proliferation, even in cells with normal telomere length such as fibroblasts. This work demonstrates a telomere length-independent pathway that contributes to a telomere dysfunction disease

    This paper is a thought experiment to attune to the geo-physical and geo-political materialities of sediment, a terra-aqueous substance produced when the earth's continental surfaces intra-act with the atmosphere and are chemically transformed by it. The paper is framed by questions of how to engage more closely with the dynamics of earth systems and of how social and political agency emerges alongside earth forces. Sediment is important to such questions because it is the mechanism by which the earth recycles itself and is thick with the climatological and geological histories that have conditioned the possibility of life on the planet. While acknowledging the import of Deleuze and Guattari's metaphysics to such questions, the paper takes a material approach to them. It is based on field work in Bangladesh, but also traverses a range of scientific, historical and theoretical literature. It is arranged in four sections that loosely correspond to the sedimentary cycle. It follows sediment from chemical processes on rock surfaces in the Himalayas, to its lively travels in monsoonal rivers across flood plains to its eventual deposition and subterranean diagenesis. In each section, the paper discusses the material processes at work, their socio-political enmeshments and the theoretical implications of these intra-actions. The paper concludes that sediment serves as a reminder not only of close entanglements of geo-physical and geo-political becomings, but also of the profound indifference of earth systems to human affairs, and asks what this might mean for the re-imagination of politics
