Steady state analytical solutions for pumping in a fully bounded rectangular aquifer
Using the Schwartz-Christoffel conformal mapping method together with the complex variable techniques, we derive steady state analytical solutions for pumping in a rectangular aquifer with four different combinations of impermeable and constant-head boundaries. These four scenarios include: (1) one constant-head boundary and three impermeable boundaries, (2) two pairs of orthogonal impermeable and constant-head boundaries, (3) three constant-head boundaries and one impermeable boundary, and (4) four constant-head boundaries. For these scenarios, the impermeable and constant-head boundaries can be combined after applying the mapping functions, and hence only three image wells exist in the transformed plane, despite an infinite number of image wells in the real plane. The closed-form solutions reflect the advantage of the conformal mapping method, though the method is applicable for the aspect ratio of the rectangle between 1/10.9 and 10.9/1 due to the limitation in the numerical computation of the conformal transformation from a half plane onto an elongated region (i.e., so-called âcrowdingâ phenomenon). By contrast, for an additional scenario with two parallel constant-head boundaries and two parallel impermeable boundaries, an infinite series of image wells is necessary to express the solution, since it is impossible to combine these two kinds of boundaries through the conformal transformation. The usefulness of the results derived is demonstrated by an application to pumping in a finite coastal aquifer
Analytical solutions of seawater intrusion in sloping confined and unconfined coastal aquifers
Sloping coastal aquifers in reality are ubiquitous and well documented. Steady state sharp-interface analytical solutions for describing seawater intrusion in sloping confined and unconfined coastal aquifers are developed based on the Dupuit-Forchheimer approximation. Specifically, analytical solutions based on the constant-flux inland boundary condition are derived by solving the discharge equation for the interface zone with the continuity conditions of the head and flux applied at the interface between the freshwater zone and the interface zone. Analytical solutions for the constant-head inland boundary are then obtained by developing the relationship between the inland freshwater flux and hydraulic head and combining this relationship with the solutions of the constant-flux inland boundary. It is found that for the constant-flux inland boundary, the shape of the saltwater interface is independent of the geometry of the bottom confining layer for both aquifer types, despite that the geometry of the bottom confining layer determines the location of the interface tip. This is attributed to that the hydraulic head at the interface is identical to that of the coastal boundary, so the shape of the bed below the interface is irrelevant to the interface position. Moreover, developed analytical solutions with an empirical factor on the density factor are in good agreement with the results of variable-density flow numerical modeling. Analytical solutions developed in this study provide a powerful tool for assessment of seawater intrusion in sloping coastal aquifers as well as in coastal aquifers with a known freshwater flux but an arbitrary geometry of the bottom confining layer
Effect of saline stress on the physiology and growth of maize hybrids and their related inbred lines
Salinity is one major abiotic stress that restrict plant growth and crop productivity. In maize (Zea mays L), salt stress causes significant yield loss each year. However, indices of maize response to salt stress are not completely explored and a desired method for maize salt tolerance evaluation is still not established. A Chinese leading maize variety Jingke968 showed various resistance to environmental factors, including salt stress. To compare its salt tolerance to other superior maize varieties, we examined the physiological and growth responses of three important maize hybrids and their related inbred lines under the control and salt stress conditions. By compar- ing the physiological parameters under control and salt treatment, we demonstrated that different salt tolerance mechanisms may be involved in different genotypes, such as the elevation of superoxide dismutase activity and/ or proline content. With Principal Component Analysis of all the growth indicators in both germination and seedling stages, along with the germination rate, superoxide dismutase activity, proline content, malondialdehyde content, relative electrolyte leakage, we were able to show that salt resistance levels of hybrids and their related inbred lines were Jingke968 > Zhengdan958 > X1132 and X1132M > Jing724 > Chang7-2 > Zheng58 > X1132F, respectively, which was consistent with the saline field observation. Our results not only contribute to a better understanding of salt stress response in three important hybrids and their related inbred lines, but also this evaluation system might be applied for an accurate assessment of salt resistance in other germplasms and breeding material
Upwelling velocity and ventilation in the western South China Sea deduced from CFC-12 and SF6 observations
This study presents observations of the transient tracers CFC-12 and SF6 in the western South China Sea during the fall of 2015. A CFC-12 maximum was discovered in the western South China Sea at the subsurface layer (150â200 m), which could be traced back to the North Pacific Tropical Water. The transit time distribution approach was used to estimate the ventilation time in this area. The constrained Î /Î ratio of 0.5 was obtained using CFC-12/SF6 tracer pair. This ratio is lower than the empirical unit ratio of one as used for previous estimates. Waters in the northern region of the western South China Sea appear younger than waters in the southern region. The water mass corresponding to the salinity minimum has a mean age of âŒ67 ± 16 years along the 15Âș N line (marked by the red dashed rectangle in Fig. 1), which increases to âŒ76 ± 18 years along the 10Âș N line (blue dashed rectangle, Fig. 1). The higher mean ages indicate that the intermediate water was ventilated from the North Pacific, which is far distant from the South China Sea. The column inventory of Cant is âŒ31.3 mol C mâ2. Upwelling velocities of up to âŒ55 Ă 10â5 m sâ1 was computed using the tracer data, indicating that tracer-free water as yet not influenced by human perturbation could be carried to the upper layer by upwelling. Using the transit time distribution derived mean age with transient tracers provides a possible way to determine the ventilation time scale for the study area
Niche Separation of Ammonia Oxidizers in Mudflat and Agricultural Soils Along the Yangtze River, China
Nitrification driven by ammonia oxidizers is a key step of nitrogen removal in estuarine environments. Spatial distribution characteristics of ammonia-oxidizers have been well understood in mudflats, but less studied in the agricultural soils next to mudflats, which also play an important role in nitrogen cycling of the estuarine ecosystem. In the present research, we investigated ammonia oxidizersâ distributions along the Yangtze River estuary in Jiangsu Province, China, sampling soils right next to the estuary (mudflats) and the agricultural soils 100 m away. We determined the relationship between the abundance of amoA genes of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and the potential nitrification rates of the mudflats and agricultural soils. We also identified the environmental variables that correlated with the composition of the ammonia oxidizersâ communities by 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing. Results indicated that agricultural soils have significantly higher potential nitrification rates as well as the AOA abundance, and resulted in strong phylogenetic clustering only in AOA communities. The ammonia oxidizersâ community compositions differed dramatically among the mudflat and agricultural sites, and stochasticity played a dominant role. The AOA communities were dominated by the Group 1.1a cluster at the mudflat, whereas the 54D9 and 29i4 clusters were dominant in agriculture soils. The dominant AOB communities in the mudflat were closely related to the Nitrosospira lineage, whereas the agricultural soils were dominated by the Nitrosomonas lineage. Soil organic matter and salinity were correlated with the ammonia oxidizersâ community compositions
ZnO nanorod arrays assembled on activated carbon fibers for photocatalytic degradation:Characteristics and synergistic effects
Well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays were assembled on activated carbon fibers by a stepwise sequence of sol-gel and hydrothermal synthesis methods. These ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers having different characteristics such as surface area, rod concentration, aspect ratio and defect level, were applied as catalysts for the photodegradation of an aqueous methylene blue solution. They showed very promising methylene blue adsorbility in the dark (ca. 0.025â0.031 mg methylene blue mâ2 catalyst, vs. 0.072 mg methylene blue mâ2 activated carbon fibers). Significantly, the defect level of ZnO nanorod arrays has a major effect on the turnover frequency compared to other characteristics. A synergistic effect between activated carbon fibers and ZnO nanocrystals on enhancing turnover frequency was more significant for the well-assembled ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers catalysts compared to the mechanically mixed ZnO powder with activated carbon fibers catalyst. Further, turnover frequency for the ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers (0.00312 molmethylene blue molZnOâ1 hâ1) was twice higher than that for the corresponding bare ZnO nanorod arrays, and 3 times higher than that for a commercial ZnO powder. In addition, ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers show high degradation (77.5%) and mineralization (55.0%) levels for methylene blue, and also good reusability (or stability) as demonstrated by a sequential 5-time recycle routine. These outstanding features indicate that activated carbon fibers supported ZnO nanorod arrays have significant potential to be used as catalysts for photodegradation
Spatiotemporal heterogeneity and impact factors of hepatitis B and C in China from 2010 to 2018: Bayesian spaceâtime hierarchy model
IntroductionViral hepatitis is a global public health problem, and China still faces great challenges to achieve the WHO goal of eliminating hepatitis.MethodsThis study focused on hepatitis B and C, aiming to explore the long-term spatiotemporal heterogeneity of hepatitis B and C incidence in China from 2010 to 2018 and quantify the impact of socioeconomic factors on their risk through Bayesian spatiotemporal hierarchical model.ResultsThe results showed that the risk of hepatitis B and C had significant spatial and temporal heterogeneity. The risk of hepatitis B showed a slow downward trend, and the high-risk provinces were mainly distributed in the southeast and northwest regions, while the risk of hepatitis C had a clear growth trend, and the high-risk provinces were mainly distributed in the northern region. In addition, for hepatitis B, illiteracy and hepatitis C prevalence were the main contributing factors, while GDP per capita, illiteracy rate and hepatitis B prevalence were the main contributing factors to hepatitis C.DisussionThis study analyzed the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of hepatitis B and C and their contributing factors, which can serve as a basis for monitoring efforts. Meanwhile, the data provided by this study will contribute to the effective allocation of resources to eliminate viral hepatitis and the design of interventions at the provincial level
